Jack The Ripper Tour

2 жыл бұрын

Today there is a consensus that the killer now known as "Jack the Ripper" had five victims. These five victims are often referred to as the "canonical" five.
This video reveals where the term "the canonical five" came from, before going on to explore where the idea that there were five victims came from.
The Whitechapel Murders official file, did in fact, have on it the names of eleven victims, and, as you will see, police officers and doctors who were connected with the case were actually divided over how many of these murders were actually carried out by Jack the Ripper.
Having discussed the opinions of police officers such as Assistant Commissioner Dr Robert Anderson, Chief Inspector Frederick Porter Wensley, and Walter Dew, the video reveals of the belief that there were five victims was largely due to a document written by Melville Macnaghten in February 1894.
Of course, the problem for us today, is that we are separated by more than133 years from the evidence and events of 1888, since we do not know who Jack the Ripper was, we have no real way of knowing how many victims he actually had... or, do we?

I've always found it hard to believe that The Ripper began his killing with evisceration. Modern criminal psychologists typically point to early exploratory violence by serial killers during their "formative" years. It's hard to imagine JtR didn't dabble with various levels of assault, arson, and even murder prior to the "Canonical Five".

He may well have to be honest. Violent crime was very common in Whitechapel at that time time often went unpunished. Bearing in mind he strangled all of his victims before inflicting the wounds, it is plausible he strangled others beforehand. We'll never know unfortunately, though I'd hope he didn't inflict harm on anyone else

I agree and always thought the Martha Tabram murder might show something of jack building up and showing perhaps a peeping Tom element..Was he watching Ms.Tabram before he stepped forward out of the shadows of a dim lit corridor..Did Jack often creep about watching. Also it’s been put about use of rubber boots worn by jack,,,why.?..Maybe rubber boots helped jack step quietly into places to creep about..If the use of rubber boots was part of early jack did have some truth..Then would rubber boots give clues to Jack’s trade..Sailor,,port worker, fish monger who would know how to use knives..Was jack gutting women like fish really and carving v shaped scales on faces..How one or more theory can spiral..But I can’t believe Jack woke up one day and thought he’d like to try to become the world first recognized serial killer..The victims we know was probably a escalation of crime via a violent and frightening childhood..

Even Mary Kelly would be forgotten with the gruesome crime scene pictures? For years I’d only heard of Jack the Ripper but didn’t read a book or see a documentary about him. I think I’d watched a few Ripper knockoff movies. Anyway, I’d have to say when I finally saw those pictures; the one in particular, I was extremely shocked.at the level of mutilation to her face and body. You can see bones sticking out and her face is complete mush. Seemingly, that would remain in infamy.

Or he would have been given another gruesome moniker. The main reason why he is so famous is partly because the press quite recently had been demonopolized in England, and partly because that The Ripper reached world notoriety because of intercontinental telegraph lines that news agencies used.

Martha Tabram was found in the middle of the locations of the canonical five, and she was killed just a few weeks before Polly Nichols was murdered in Bucks Row at the end of August 1888. She was in the same age group, the same social class, she lived a similar lifestyle to the 5 later victims, she was brutally murdered with a bladed weapon in the early hours. Anyone who has been to Whitechapel and Spitalfields will know just how close the murder sites and other associated places actually are (I mean places like Commercial Street Police Station, Wentworth Dwellings, Widegate Street, various pubs and other buildings). Even though that part of East London had many streets that were coloured black or dark blue on Booths poverty map (indicating 'vicious and semi criminal' and 'very poor') murder was still uncommon. So in my opinion, the chances of a middle aged, alcoholic, prostitute, living a chaotic lifestyle in common lodging houses in Spitalfields, being found stabbed to death in the early hours of the morning, close or very close to Bucks Row, Berner Street, Hanbury Street, Dorset Street and Mitre Square, just a couple of weeks before Mary Ann Nichols was found, just a few minutes walk eastwards along Wentworth Street and Old Montague Street and across Vallance Road into Bucks Row.. Martha Tabram matches nearly every other factor, that connects the canonical 5 victims, as you said, the only slight difference is how the murderer actually used a knife to kill the poor women. Location, time of murder, the age and lifestyle, etc of Martha Tabram, matches the other victims. So the chances of another killer who just happened to kill a middle aged alcoholic prostitute, in the early morning darkness, with a bladed weapon, literally in the middle of the 5 later murder locations, less than 20 days before the next murder.. well, seems very unlikely to me..

I'm really enjoying your content. Great stuff. I have a little story (sort of) relating to Jack you might like to hear: I live in Waterford in Ireland and about 15 years ago cobble stones were put down in a small area in the city. My friend's house at the time looked down on this particular part of town. I met him one night for a few drinks just after the stones had been put down and he told me that one night he happened to look out his bedroom window and saw a person in a cape and tall hat walking around the area. He said the person made him think of Jack the Ripper. So a few weeks later we met for drinks again and he asked me did I remember the conversation from a few weeks ago about the person that looked like Jack the Ripper. He then told me that he had since read in one of the local newspapers that the cobble stones were shipped over from Whitechapel.

Interesting story, but I feel it would be very unlikely that 'Jack' would have worn a top hat and cape...Simply because in that rough part of London, such a person would have stood out a mile. He is far more likely, in my opinion, to have been a working man, say a horse slaughterer, {there were many in London} and his occupation would have made him being ''bloody'' normal.

While the belief held by all detective agencies is that a serial killer almost always sticks to his modus operandi and never departs from it, the "almost" means that once in a while some killers vary the method. Insisting on the number five due to similarity of method has resulted in over a hundred suspects and no conviction, whereas further investigation of the other murders might have turned up clues to the real identity of Jack. A century and a quarter having passed with no definite and generally accepted identification of the killer suggests that he will continue to be a subject of armchair investigation and unproved theories. Yes, I believe that his count is greater than the "canonical five."

I don’t think is a stretch to consider they’re were more than one killer with the (5). The police released the details so the people knew they were mutilated. But whose to say if Jack the Ripper had even just a few more seconds with each of the victims that he would have done way more mutilation. What if he was just interrupted or thought that someone was coming so he couldn’t do what he wanted to with each one. Every victim he had a different amount of time with.

People like him start somewhere, maybe a gross beating or domestic violence that's not been noted. They build up. I think he would have had to for how 'precise' he was. I think the case for Martha and emma as ripper victims is very weak. Both show different psychological motivation. MO changes. Signature doesn't. Elizabeth stride i could go either way on but there's too much similarity in victimology, location and technique. I would say 99% sure it was the ripper. Mary kelly undoubtedly was. Saying the MO is too different is irrelevant. Plenty of killers change their MO. It was the ripper unimpeded by threat of discovery, able to go fully nuts. The subsequent crimes people have attempted to tie to the ripper i think are similarly weak. They show a de-escalation from Mary Kelly. And that is very unlikely. Whoever killed Mary was mentally gone. You don't come back from that. That said i do think Jack committed other crimes including murder before the canonical five. They were just either missed or the connection was never made. You don't just suddenly start with a murder like that of Nichols.

I agree that Martha Tabram was most probably an earlier Ripper victim, considerable the stab wounds in her case were directed towards lower parts of her abdomen. As for the canonical 5 victims, I wouldn´t be so sure. As Jones pointed out, many people believe Stride was a Ripper victim because she was killed on the same day as Eddows was. But coincidences can happen - as we know, Whitechapel wasn´t a particularly safe place and crime there was very common at that time. I have no reason to believe Israel Schwartz was being untruthfull in his testimony. This means there was more then 1 person involved in that murder - so, either was Stride a victim of someone else (like a street gang or a duo of criminals) or she was a victim of the Ripper. But if you think she was the later, that will put you in the not so comfortable position that the Ripper murders were not committed by a lone killer. As for Mary Jane Kelly, I am on the fence: there are both good reasons for her either being a Ripper victim or not.

Lovely! A new episode! Thank you! I’m not so sure that neither Elizabeth Stride nor Mary Kelly were the victims of Jack The Ripper . There are too many inconsistencies with these two cases to immediately be associated with the murders of Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Catherine Eddowes and frankly more possibly Martha Tabram. To me it looks as Stride was not a Ripper victim but a victim of a common assault. The main reason why Stride was associated with The Ripper at all, is the letter that mentioned the “double event”. But since that letter most likely is a hoax, as hundreds of other letters sent to the police by pranksters, the connection become, at best, very weak without it. And George Hutchinson is a likely suspect in the murder of Mary Kelly, that show all the hallmarks of being a quite personal act of violence. My theory is that Mary Kelly’s murderer not only wanted to destroy her and erase her. He also wanted to own her and to become her. I suspect he did more in that room than just the horrible mutilation. The police believed that the women’s clothes in the fireplace were Kelly’s and that they were burned to “get more light”, which doesn’t make much sense since damp textiles don’t burn very well. I think he may have been trying to dispose of evidence, that in fact he was wearing while performing a ritual that he had fantasized about for a very long time. Therefore the excessive violence. He had a plan and a purpose. I also wonder if Hutchinson might be connected to the Themes Torso Murders, as a prelude of targeting his prime obsession, Mary Kelly. While the Kelly murder at least show some signs of planning by an organized killer, the remaining murders shows signs of an unorganized killer, who chose his victim at random, simply because of their sheer accessibility.

I agree with you. I think Elizabeth Strides murder was more than likely a domestic and the murder of Mary Jane Kelly was commited by a person very well known to her. I also see the other 3 murders as random acts by a crazy misogynist, but MJK's murder was personal.

Highly unlikely there were TWO killers that slit throats of ladies of the night in a very close area of time and space that morning. The Ripper was almost certainly disturbed after killing Stride. The location and timing fits in perfectly with him then moving to the Aldgate area and finding another victims to satisfy his blood lust. Ted Bundy did similar after his kidnapping of Carol DaRonch failed. He drove elsewhere and killed poor Debbie Kent. Id give Stride a 90% chance of being a Ripper victim.

The burned clothes could have had more to do with the murderers escape plan. At the time it was still believed (initially even by the attending police) that sniffer dogs were on call. This could literally have been his attempt to throw those imaginary dogs off the scent. As most murderers do not go around with a change of clothes I am going to assume he changed into some he found at the scene. Clothing belonging to Joe Barnett perhaps.

@@lyndoncmp5751 Not necessarily. There were women being murdered both before and after the Whitechapel murders too, and it’s far from unlikely that an “ordinary” murder was committed while Jack The Ripper operating as well. And then there’s the matter with Jack being seen while committing the murder, not only by one, but by two witnesses, and even talking to them. It just doesn’t fit the profile and it doesn’t fit Jack’s known modus operandi. And bear in mind that if the Themes Torso Murders weren’t the handywork of the Ripper, then you not only have a a random killing at the same time as the Ripper, but in fact a second serial killer in London. Between 11 September and 17 October 1888, the dismembered remains of a woman were discovered at three different sites in the centre of the city. This was literally just a couple of days after Annie Chapman was murdered in Hanbury Street by the Ripper. The Themes Torso Killer claimed three additional victims as well.

They were related in a very distinctive way so it was possible to link them with a killer in particular. Anyway i believe that 5 or 8 it doesn't change much. @@GeorgeFreeman55 hello, first the context, he knew the 5 victims, he knew their background, and second, it is known that serial killers increase violence and most of the time they send clues to the police. Jack did that but the violence shown in Mary doesn't have a record. So now my theory. As I said Jack knew the 5 victims. And he was in love or infatuated with Mary They were acquaintances, right i am sure the five have shared a table in the ten Bell pub. So Jack knew or thought it was possible to see Mary there she was younger than the others. She has been married but for a short period. So she was like a naive woman to his eyes And she wasn't as bad as the other five victims. She wasn't an alcoholic, she has never had children, so she had potential as a wife(according to that time) So, first Jack talked to Mary Nichols about his feelings for Mary Kelly, of course, Nichols was drunk and laugh at him and he cut her throat to silence her laugh. And then he stabbed her furious. It isn't a coincidence, that the crimes didn't stop there. Jack had a goal, Mary Kelly, so he was going to try again. And then Annie becomes his second victim. With her, the legend took shape. I am sure as far I can know that he tried to conquer Mary again. Being rejected by the young woman. How this woman could choose prostitution and decline what he was offering, a good life a husband etc, and that is when stride and eddowes appeared. Stride could have been the only victim that night. But he saw the second man and stranger able to see him and heard what he was saying to stride. And he silenced her and walked away. But there was a problem the adrenaline on his systems was so strong that he was exhilarated. That is why he chose to do something when he met Eddows. The violence against her was unnecessary, he was furious. He took her, her beauty and took his time with her taking off several organs. He was Jack after all. He was the man to whom everyone was speaking to now. He was going to show Mary how dangerous the area was and how good catch was him after all. But that doesn't work. The fury against Mary was brutal. I presume he spoke to her again. This time he was sure she was going to say yes. Who wouldn't be? After all the killer was doing what he wanted. the police were useful. Work on the street wasn't safe those days. But Mary said no again and that was all he had killed 4 women as proof of his" love for her" and now she was saying no again! That was not possible. and he killed Mary in the most brutal, violent and horrible way. And then he disappeared .for real? I am not sure about this, after all, jack was a phantom nobody had seen his face for real. So for me, he didn't leave the area, he just stood there leaving a normal life mourning the loss of what in his head had been his "true love" and died alone in a dark corner on street in Whitechapel. Do not get me wrong this theory has nothing to do with a romantic story. On the contrary, is an example of how a delusional mind can create horror and destruction when it is not under control

Out of idle curiosity, how many victims did Barlow and Watt conclude/believe there were in the BBC mini-series?
@kate_cooper

Well, Emma Smith can be safely discounted as a Ripper victim. She was a victim of a gang attack. She wasn’t even killed outright, she died of her injuries in hospital a couple of days later. And the main motive for the attack appears to have been robbery. There’s no reason to link the attack to the Ripper killings other than the timing. Martha Tabram is impossible to be sure of. She was deliberately killed in a knife attack. So she may have been a practice killing, as you said, before the killer settled on his MO, or she may have been killed by a separate killer. Both are possible.

Think about the time Jack the Ripper had. Did he kill more than the 5? Was he interrupted or heard footsteps coming so he obviously didn’t have time to do more damage to the bodies so that’s why the other murders at the time weren’t as mutilated as (the 5). Look at the last murder, did he want to do that much mutilation to all of them but they weren’t inside so therefore couldn’t do that much mutilation without getting seen or interrupted. Had he had just a few more seconds with each one of his murders would they all be considered his victims ya know. We could have over a dozen forsure Similar murders linked to him if that were the case.

The exact manner of death and any small details of the crimes being compared don't answer any of these questions? I never heard there could be fewer victims before, only that there could be more. Interesting.

Tabram was an earlier victim. HOLMES (Uk policing tool) says so……. I’d be investigating Knife attacks on women during late 1887 and early 1888.

This is a logical conclusion.Thekillings are simply too far back in time, and whilst the commentators may have been convinced of their assertions, there is not - and never can be - definitive proof. For what it's worth,my opinion is that Martha Tabram is a victim of the "Ripper". Thank you.for this excellent series.👍

The vid ends on what is most likely the right note. Jack the Ripper did not exist and was just a name coined by the news agency for self-serving reasons. Whitechapel in 1888 was an overcrowded slum with a high crime rate. The 11 crimes, including the canonical 5, were most likely just 11 random crimes committed by various, unconnected individuals that somehow got lumped together by little more than ignorance. The only real factor connecting them is proximity, which means nothing given the overcrowding of the area. And the so called “MO” of the crimes just points to knives being the most common way criminals carried out their acts back then. None of the evidence in this case comes anywhere close to being cohesive and conclusive, much less proving Jack the Ripper’s existence. It’s just a silly urban legend that got carried too far for too long.

I myself think that the main “canonical” five killings were likely connected with the possible exception of Liz Stride who might or might not have been killed in a lover’s quarrel, The other four killings show a progression in savagery and brutality in killing and disemboweling that IMHO go beyond just random criminal acts of Whitechapel thugs and culminated in Mary Kelly’s last night on earth in Miller’s Court.

If you are talking about kosminski he was not the Ripper, DNA evidence found would exclude him not implicate him, he was also mostly non violent having only ever attacking his sister with a knife, he wasn't institutionalized until 1891 and he did not die till 1919

I think it was because after fleeing to America Jack settled down and became a hard working Stan up guy.. He worked on a ranch and also run a bordello which had to shut down as all the workers kept dying. It's rumoured the Rippers gran daughter got a job at the Whitehouse and was seduced by JFK and the Ripper got his ghastly revenge

How would the body be transported? Hand cart? Pony & cart? Two strong men? Most of the people in the area of Whitechapel were very poor. For them a pony and cart would be a luxury item.

I do not think Elizabeth stride was a victim. I think Israel Schwartz witnessed Elizabeth killing. It is highly unlikely that she would be attacked twice in the space of about 15 minutes. I think she was waiting to see Louis Diemschutz about a Job in the club (she could speak Yiddish) and she refused the person who attacked her . Schwartz witnesses that attack. I also think that Fanny Mortimer who heard foot steps outside her window was that of poor Annie who was waiting. Pacing up and down to keep warm. Unfortunately I can’t prove this but the circumstances fit. I guess we will never know for sure who Jack killed .

Why the five victims? because those five women (actually just four as it's believed Catherine Eddowes was wrongly killed because the "ripper" thought she was Mary Kelly) were specifically targeted to be killed because they were threatening to blackmail the royal family because of their knowledge of Prince Eddy's affair, marriage and child with Anne Crook. I believe this is the real reason why those five women were killed, and it makes perfect sense to me, but some people think they know better and like to perpetuate the myth of Jack the Ripper has being some lone, maniacal madman who went around the East End of London stalking prostitutes yet only managed to killed five yet was never caught.
