The Matrix wouldn’t be The Matrix without its iconic costumes. The revolutionary film makes no attempt to hide its anime and comicbook inspiration. Let's go Behind the Seams!

your compairson with Inception made me chuckle because I did the exact same compairson when I watched Tenet and my professional opinion was: the problem with Chris Nolan is that this man has never went to a rave

i absolutely adored inception and tenet was very very enjoyable, but it also felt like a concerted effort to outdo just how complicated inception was. big "hold my beer" stuff but about his own body of work.

The actual cyberpunk dystopia of 2021 is really disappointing on the fashion front.

What makes the Matrix better than Inception is what also makes the costumes timeless - the rebellion. The Matrix feels like it’s pushing back against the system; Inception feels like it’s trying to avoid stepping on its toes.

I loved the costumes in Jupiter Ascending so much. I know the matrix probably doesn't have a ton of room for ball gowns, but like, I hope there's some kind of absurd embroidery.

The club scene was shot in a famous Sydney Fetish club called Hellfire (sadly no longer running). I live in Sydney, where the movie was shot, and can’t help see the locations I know well - in fact, I feel the lighting and colour pallet of the movie has influenced my memories to the extent that I remember things from the 90s with that green hue!

I had no idea about the Invisibles influence! Nice to see Grant Morrison getting some notice, though!

It is nice.....try and catch a 2000AD series from the late 80’s ‘Zenith’ which I think you’ll love. Together with Pat Mills & Kevin O’Neill’s ‘Marshal Law’ (please don’t start me on the magpie effort ‘The Boys’) they were one of first to satirise super heroes, behaving badly. Zenith also included quite a few Lovecraftian elements too. Morrison is greatly overlooked and I think as relevant as Gaiman.

I used to think the Matrix did sort of fit under that general "typical post-blade runner" sci-fi fashion, but this gave me so much more appreciation for it.

that bit about the fear of corporate overlords controlling the poor underclass *nervous laughter* not prescient AT ALL this also reminded me quite viscerally of just how BADLY i wanted a trenchcoat growing up. such a look!!!

In terms of sartorial choices, Trinity's costume held up the best. Looked cool then, looks cool now. As for the leather and PVC, they would be signs to those still plugged into the matrix of don't approach me- I'm not one of you.

I have only watched the first few seconds of this video. THANK YOU x 100 for mentioning the influence of Grant Morrison’s ‘The Invisibles’. He could have been exceedingly obstructive over this matter, but only ever wanted recognition of how he clearly inspired the Wachowskis. Gonna watch the rest now.

The cool looking costumes while they’re jacked-in are explained in the first big exposition sequence where Morpheus and Neo are in the construct. Morpheus mentions the concept of “residual self image” when Neo seems surprised to have hair and normal clothes. It’s logical to assume that Morpheus and his hacker/operatives can simply imagine what they want to look like while appearing in the matrix.
