Writer-director Anvitaa Dutt speaks about the boys of Bulbbul - the dark story behind Mahendra knowing how to shut Bulbbul up, Indranil as the ineffective patriarch, and Satya, as the ‘progressive man’ who turns out to be the gravest disappointment of all.
‘Men Written By Women’ is The Swaddle’s video series, where women talk to us about the men they’ve written for film.

Bulbul characters are disappointing because they are very realistic and not some sugar coated feel good storytelling. Even Binodini's jealousy and control towards bulbul is very realistic portrayal of family dynamics. Reality is dark and disappointing.

@@dominikjunior1998 Even if one person goes through this, it's still realistic but that's not the point. Let me tell you what's realistic. Child marriages, men preying on young girls and abusing their wives. Men r@ping women. Women having internalised misogyny and subjecting other women to the same crap they went through and enabling it. Women being killed during sexu@l violence from men. All of these things are an every day occurrence in both rich and poor areas.

Why no mention about Dr.Sudip? Because he was a man I didn't find disgusting. He is a doctor, he is extra careful about helping Bulbul recover, becomes her close friend and even perhaps a confidant and yet after developing almost the same emotions as that of Satya's, admits right on the face of Bulbul when asked by her , that he is a coward and that he would like to maintain boundaries. So somewhere down, he has consciously reckoned his feeling for a woman like Bulbul but realises soon that that's not all that is enough to build the relationship he covets secretly with her. He is true to both his feelings and Bulbul and also to his outlook as a person being a doctor, where he says that he would rather like saving than hunting. And that triggers Satya, where he is even more mired in with the complex and confounding relationship he has always shared with his bhaabi Bulbul and grows into an overbearingly protective patriarch. The nature if which is condemned by the free spirited Bulbul, when her heart is broken finding her old friend and once close confidant since childhood having same notions growing from toxic masculinity.

So this brings us to the conclusion that at one point in the forest , the doctor told him the entire truth . About her feet and Mahendras death amd the death of the rest . That's why indranil comes back one final time after Satya cuts off contact with him.

He is a child at heart but has a man's body. A body that has gone through puberty, naturally gets aroused by looking at a woman. It's the same as a teenager with an underdeveloped brain but is too horny to control themselves or detect dangers and consequences which commonly leads to unwanted pregnancies. Mating is a very important and natural process that doesn't need to be taught. Life literally depends on it. Animals even find ways to understand how to mate. He probably raped his wife like this but at the end still doesn't understand the consequences and concepts like consent, rape.

Idk...but I never found satya disappointing...i totally agree with this statement that it's his brother's wife ,even subconsciously he won't ever think of naming that relationship along romantic lines but emotionally he is feeling everything.....also he has no idea of what has happened unlike doctor so it's natural if you see your brother's wife with someone like that while he may himself feels something for her which he isn't even thinking about....that's some very confusing emotions he's dealing with.....so he acts upon the only thing he is absolutely clear about which is that his brother's wife not being faithful to his "hero"........but at the end you could clearly see his raw emotions for her......he is actually very realistic...

Entire Bengali culture sphere is always always about villainify men and putting women in high pedestal. There isn't a single Bengali TV serial where a super Marry Sue character is running everything and men are either props or villains. All women are Durga/Kali and all men are asura. Mind you this is from a culture that is all about women worshipping, the starting point of liberal feminism in indian subcontinent, where the 12th pass out ratio skewed extremely towards women in 60 to 40 ratio. Even with all that misandry is cultivated culturally here which no one talks about. Makes me wonder sometimes whether northern conservative part of india has right ideas.

Satya was disappointing not because he didn't get bulbbul's situation but because he completely missed how kind of person she is. In his jealousy that was so visible he just started to question her morals and characters. He was a very dear to bulbbul, her safe place so she and us viewers expected smth better. He was a good person but then again it showed reality even for today that we often turn out how people around us are and how their mentality is.

@@howwbiee1494 like the swaddle you also ignored the fact that this happened because of a women jealousy but anyways. Since he was her safe space then why didn't confessed him about her hardship? And like she was regularly meeting with an other men without any reason. So his doubting her make perfect sense. What's disappointing in that? Its the human nature. 🤷🏽‍♂️

@@ZarathustraSpeaking You're really naive if you think abuse and assault is that easy to talk about. That was the point. Its sickening to see men try to defend Bulbbul's assault even though she's a fictional character. It disgusts me to think how you would react if (God forbid) someone you actually know suffers through this.

@@ZarathustraSpeaking have you even watched the movie? And you're actually defending Bulbul's sexual assault by saying "she used to meet other men" disgusting mentality but what else can we expect from an illiterate like you

Why men in bulbul are disappointing?? Because it is written by a women.

Hmm ... are men in IRL also written by men? :P Joke aside, Bulbul demanded such. Men written by women is a trope used to depict men characters who are admirable for women audience - for example, Bangalore days. On the other hand, pick any typical Bollywood/Telugu movie to see women written by men - air headed bimbos with amazing looks and being a liability to men especially in their battles against villains

In Real Life also, only a handful of Men are Not Disappointing - so thank you for admitting that the vast majority including you, were written by Women. Atleast this Realisation / Reminder would help us Women discard Your Existence as Fictional (Caricature - to be precise) and look for Companionship from the Authentic, Self-Reflecting Ones among You.
