Another factor is how easy it has become to autotune someone's voice so that they sound good on a record. This has allowed labels to focus more on the visuals and social media status of an artist, rather than vocal ability.
@Durannn
@Durannn 2 жыл бұрын
autotune isn't some magical tool that makes everyone good at singing. You actually have to be able to sing decently for it to actually work.
@rayaan7637
@rayaan7637 2 жыл бұрын
@@Durannn But that’s the key word, decently. U don’t have to be an amazing singer to sound good w autotune. The girls nowadays sound better than the men to me. Look at all these new male RnB artist like 6lack Blxst Tory Lanez Partynextdoor even Drake when he sings they all can sing but none of them are Michael Jackson R Kelly or even Usher level, and the autotune and engineering helps them all go from sounding good to great when they sing. Same goes for girls tho like Sza, Jhene Aiko and even Rihanna

@@rayaan7637 Yes, and keep in mind even the good singers you mentioned (MJ, R Kelly and Usher) were still below the level of much of the artists that came before in terms of sheer vocal skill. This why old school singing touched our souls! It was a spiritual experience that evoked real emotion. True that some of these new girls do have a gift…but it’s rarely cultivated and developed to help them reach their full potential. And so many are awful live performers! My guess is that the industry is more interested in quantity than quality. Nowadays it seems that high quality singers are more likely to be found on the Broadway stage, Lincoln Center, the Philharmonic etc. So sad for those of us who truly appreciate good music.

When he was showing the clips comparing singers today versus the older singers, i could see what he was saying. Older gen singers focused more on their talent in singing while nowadays singers focus more on visuals. Pretty much as long as they “look” appealing, their singing won’t be focused on as much. I think the "tastes" of the times also factor into this as well. Music companies don't need to seek out artists that sound like Whitney or Aretha because that style of singing with the belting can sound super dated. I imagine that if Whitney came up today as a brand new artist, there's a possibility she wouldn't be as big in 2022. And music companies know that they make more money staying mainly in the lane of pop music that's fast pace, catchy, and doesn't require hitting notes and doing belts thanks to autotune.
@ii954
@ii954 2 жыл бұрын
Bringing up an artist like Whitney and Aretha requires not just potential but also a lifetime of being around trained professional singers in an environment that also teaches an understanding of music composition. That’s just not something the industry is willing to spend (time and money wise) on each artist so they focus on making something just good enough to get people interested for a week or so when the songs go out of style. It would be like expecting McDonalds to give out a homemade flavor with their food. That’s just not their lane anymore 🤷🏽‍♂️

I don’t why people are acting like Ariana can’t sing down. I’ve seen some people discredit her because they don’t know exactly what Ariana can do with her vocals. All it take is some research out side of her pop songs and find her singing live and even then Ariana sounds better than more than half of these modern girls. Don’t forget Patti Labelle acknowledged and praised Ariana Grande’s ability to sing down. None of these other girls ever got that in anyway because their vocals are simply not on Ariana’s level.

When you have great singers like Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, Barbra Streisand, Chaka Khan singing their hearts out to millions of people, they always sing on point because they sang when they were younger & put in a lot of practice, nowadays you have vocal filters, auto-tune that fix vocal flaws, so even though these new singers sound decent on their records, they go sing in person at concerts and don't have the vocal filters that they have in major recording studios, so they sound flat & off key. That's why a lot of these vocalist today use auto-tune to sound better, but to me they sound horrible, I guess it's just me, I'm old as fuck.

I don’t necessarily agree. There are alot of new artist who use alot of autotune, and are mostly here for visuals, but artists like Normani and Chloe genuinely have singing talent, the use of autotune or voice corrector is their choice. The use of that doesnt take away from talent, and we need to get away from comparing older generation artists to new generation artists, its 2 completely different lanes

Yea he shoulda specified it's not all of the new girls and used better clips to showcase that the talent, preparation, and overall well-rounded performance quality still exists. But as far as comparing, maybe we don't need to compare singers BUT the quality of music still needs to be addressed as well as the technique. SZA and Summer are vibes and make catchy songs, but you can barely understand SZA and Summer's performances, from what I often hear, majority of the time aren't good, yet they're thrown on stage without the amount of prep the older singers had. Are we going to avoid addressing that?

this video is VERY selective IMO. first off this man chose singers purposefully that don't have much of a range which is fine because not everyone can sing but let's not be hypocrites a lot of bop to songs and love them regardless. Also this man sat there and pretended he hasn't heard chloe of halle bailey with their amazing vocals. There are too many to count that can sing with a wide range and trained talent. Also Ravyn Lenae has a beautiful voice. But also this is 2022. We aren't in the "golden age" anymore, where music has to be one thing. Now we can many genres and beats that don't require a lot of vocals, such as pop, techno, r$b, rock. What happened to fun? also lets talk about these MEN since only women are mentioned, women have to do 10 times the work a man does, but where are the male vocalist? common now, music should be enjoyed you'll find anything anywhere, you're just purposefully not looking.

@@stonegreen972 Pop music has historically favored male crooners, so while we historically had some great vocalists among them ( e.g Frank Sinatra ), they weren't really required to do much vocally. If you want to hear male vocalists doing a lot, you'll be better off branching off to either rock or R'n'B. Outside of that, pop male vocalists tend to be underappreciated compared to female ones even when they're good simply because their tessituras naturally sit lower, so people find their singing less exciting.

I'm only 6 minutes in and this is pissing me off. You CANNOT compare those singers to the mainstream singers. These people he's talking about are highly gifted singers. There's different kinds of voices and there's not enough practice in the world to make your vocal chords do what these others do. It's like everyone speaking in the same voice. All of our voices are DIFFERENT. You cannot duplicate these voices no matter how much practice you put in. Even if you DIDN'T go to church you could still have that type of voice and as long as you take care of and nurture it, you'll still be as gifted. He doesn't know how much practice any of these singers put in. Their voices are NOT built that way. There's singers out NOW that have those kind of voices but are made to dumb down their voices. Hes not making good comparisons.

Exactly, and the clip he showed of that girl singing man down by Rihanna really irked me because he compared it to a person belting. Artist development still exists. He's still ignoring the fact that there's just not alot of singers at the caliber of these singers of the past. That's not what the labels are putting out there. There's a place for all kinds of music but let's be clear: R&B music is damn near a thing of the past. It's all about the trap beats and all the shit that takes away from the singers true vocals INCLUDING autotune. Autotune isn't new. But its being used very differently than when it was originated. So instead of you using your OWN voice to correct any mistakes they use that dumb shit. Or they want to have a specific type of sound. Anyone who truly needs autotune is not a vocalist because your voice is an instrument. Therefore you have to tune it the same way you'd tune a trumpet, violin, etc. Using autotune instead of your own instrument tune itself is detrimental to your voice as well as people believing you sound a certain way but you don't. The sad part is that even those with good voices use autotune.

Yes, the vocalists of today are quite wack compared to their predecessors. Besides training there's another element that's lacking: the composer/song writer. Black music today is written by HIP-HOP HEADS. Singing takes a backseat to RAP. The cadence, rhythm and vibe of singing is heavily influenced by RAP. Current producers aren't looking for Chaka Khans, Whitney Houstons, Aretha Franklins etc. You don't need powerhouses if the vocalist is only going to sing the hook. Or if the vocalist is only going to rap-sing. Nowadays the true vocalists are still in the church or they are singing background.
