Oof. I hadn't thought of that. But I agree. Although - I did like The Whiz as a kid with Michael Jackson and Diana Ross. It was a unique visual take on everything. The parking lot scene with those things that came to life always scared me!

AMEN!!! Some things are never to be re-done. It doesn't need to be brought to a new generation as anything other than what it already is. The only thing that they might do to "improve " it would be to digitally remaster it to improve the optics. That's it. Other than that, leave it alone.

They did "remake" it during COVID-19 as a fundraiser. It's great without taking away anything from the original. Large cast of famous actors, playing their favorite characters at home, with homemade props. There is something about Jack Black looking at a plastic light sabre and saying, "I've never seen its equal."

I'm not sure you touched on this specifically, but the pacing of the film is just top notch. Like... there's never a moment where you're bored or overstimulated or where you find yourself waiting for the next part. Probably some of the best pacing in a film that I've ever seen.

GAH, I didn't even think of putting "As you wish" in my wife's wedding band. I put something else from the movie and it wasn't, "Inconceivable!" Our first dance was meant to be to "Storybook Love," but the version with the words. The DJ didn't have the soundtrack CD (this was 1990) so we lent him ours and made it very clear that this job was at stake if he didn't play the LAST song on the CD, not the first (which was the instrumental version). He played the first song and as we were dancing and the intro of the song ended and the words didn't start and my brand new wife had to hold me back. I said, "But no one is going to know what this song is! Without the words, they won't know why we chose this song!" She said, "The song is just for us. Don't worry about anyone else."

When a movie becomes so good that it not only encapsulates the time period it was made in but also the nostalgic eras that it was hearkening back to, it feels hypnotic. Not only is this movie a great example of a movie from the '80s, it also feels very much like the Romantic fantasy from the early 1900s that it was alluding to.

You can't take the grandfather scene out at the beginning because you lose the foundation for the grandfather to say "As you wish" himself when the grandson suggests he come by tomorrow and read it again. That is key because we come to learn that the grandfather means that in precisely the same way that Westley did with Buttercup.

Really good points about the script being so tight! Everything spoken adds to the movie. There are only 2 female characters in the film (yes there is also the queen, but she's little more than a cardboard cut-out) and yet they manage to present tremendous depth. Buttercup is the most earnest and passionate character, and Valerie is the fiercest. She's also HILARIOUS, and wild where Buttercup is cultured. The film is a perfectly balanced comic adventure.

The Princess Bridge is almost an Abridged version of the book in movie format. All of the fat was cut out from the book itself, so all of the dialog and scenes pop and critical to the film as a whole with just the right amounts of humour and wit sprinkled in. Put it all together with a classic fantasy story elements and perfect casting and you have a near perfect movie.

@@msmith3090 I doubt they could make a movie like this today, which will have the same heart and charm as Princess Bride. @@whytheline Your review made me go back and rewatch the scene (so thanks). Christopher Guest does indeed say "saying" but he does it with an angry frustrated growl that's almost a gurgle. In the book, Goldman tells how The Princess Bride was read aloud to him because it's a boring historical book and his father just read him "the good parts". The type of dry writing S. Morgenstern did is nodded to by the "since the invention of the kiss" line. I think this is why the countries are named Florin and Guilder, because Morgenstern wrote like an accountant.

@@whytheline High Fantasy involves more magical elements such a wizards, dragons, and elves. Example being the Lord of the Rings. It is a world unrecognizable from reality and requires explanation. High fantasy is centered around "world building." Fairy tales are fictional but are still grounded in a world resembling our own. The stories are often simple requiring no explanation or exposition such as the stories from the Brothers Grimm and Mother Goose. Fables are specifically told to teach a moral lesson about life. Examples being Asop's Fables showing the pitfalls of the 7 deadly sins.

Columbo was a TV show from the 70s. Somebody could be born in ‘75 and not remember this show (it wasn’t for kids). A full grown adult - 47 or 48 today might not know who Columbo is. Am I giving away how young I am ….. or are you giving away how geriatric you are?

@@whytheline Must've struck a nerve there. Didn't mean to. Your nasty reply is even more telling than not knowing who Peter Falk is. It's easy to see why you only have a couple hundred subs.

@@drider43 no nerve struck. Just pointing out that not knowing who Columbo is doesn’t make somebody young. Assuming somebody is young for not knowing who Columbo is suggests a bias for being elderly. That’s just the logic. If you’re offended - then you’re the one whose nerve was touched. How many subs do you have? Sure. I’ve only got 210. I’ve only been doing this channel for a few months. Why would you point to that as some kind of “own” You came to my Chanel and went out of your way to leave an obnoxious comment and then fawn over the slightest pushback from me like “oh this monster called me old.” Clutch your pearls somewhere else Becky.

It’s the most annoying movie I have watched. Cheaply done and lacked plot. People say it’s quotable? There’s nothing quotable about it. I just came to realise that this is part of the Americans culture, to agree that something is a nice idea, like allowing people to have guns, but is not. You have to go a watch A Knights Tale.

You should perhaps ask people who did not imprint on this while clueless children. As a adult Brit seeing this once it was immediately apparent it was a pile of witless garbage, unfunny in the extreme.

I am so into classics and cult classics but Princess Bride was ummm dull. Maybe it's not timeless. I see how it ould have been hilarious in the 80s. But it just doesn't hold up. Like M.A.S.H, it's one is f those classics that needs to take a back seat now. Hyping it only makes it's gene ration seem.....whatever lol.
