I met Jim in Dallas during his Dingo Warrior days. He was shopping in a store I worked in and I approached him with the typical "hey aren't you?". He said yeah but you can just call me Jim. He spent about 5 minutes answering my fanboy questions, then apologetically said he had to get going. He would occasionally pass through the store after that and would always stop and talk for a few minutes. I don't know about the things said in this video, but it doesn't sound anything like the guy I knew. He was always gracious and humble when we talked and I was heartbroken when I heard he had passed away.

I still see his brother all the time. Hes actually bigger than the warrior was. Use to wonder why with him being such a star why his brother drove a car on its last leg, lived in section 8 housing and counted change for groceries. His mother was a nice lady mowed her yard a few times.

In spite of that incident, Warrior admitted that he "enjoyed working with Andre." Warrior said that if Andre didn't like working with a guy, that he'd physically him in the ring. Andre told Randy Savage not to wear baby oil, but Randy wore it anyway, and he "suffered", when Andre stepped on his hair and stretched him in the ring. Eventually, Savage caught onto the fact that Andre was not to be trifled with. Meanwhile, Randy's brother Lanny Poffo, only has great memories of Andre. In addition, Andre was very generous with his money. He refused to let Arnold Schwarzenegger pay the bill at dinner. Arnold "knew better" than to argue with Andre. 😆

My biggest problem with the Ultimate Warrior is that I never viewed him as a “belt guy.” He’s the very definition of “didn’t need it” when describing a character that can get over without a title. He was larger than life, charismatic, and even a little bit crazy (in a good way) that would make him a great character to face off against the menacing heel. And in fact, the eccentricity of his character would make something material like a title belt seem meaningless to him. Whereas there are many other competitors at the time who had a more wrestling and come petition centric approach such as Hulk Hogan, Rick Rude Mr. perfect, and Randy Savage- who all seemed to be more “belt guys” in that sense. Yet for some reason, they kept putting titles on him and putting him in title matches which could’ve been better used to elevate another character. Warrior was a made man so he could draw a good house on his name alone.

Mr Perfect FOR SURE, should have been champion, for an extended period. Rude would have done well with the belt. I see what you're saying, and i think your point proves exactly why he was WWF Champ only once, he was much like The Undertaker, a belt just seemed out of place on Taker, especially in the 90's.

that was the problem having vince in charge.. he didnt think about the psychology of wrestling or try stay true to its nature... he only saw that warrior was the most popular and that he was gonna be the top guy.. so had beat hogan .. they should have never met in the ring.. as both were babyface... and like u say warrior wasnt a belt guy.. he was a cartoon character ..and again having fantasy characters doesnt go well with realism of competing for a belt .. thats what killed wrestling was way too much gimmicks rather than staying true to realistic presentation ... !

I keep coming back to a story shared in Bret Hart's autobiography. WWF was big into Make a Wish, and a terminally ill kid was brought into an arena to meet Warrior, even wearing his face paint and the arm bands. Warrior...decided he had no time for the kid because he was playing cards. The Hart Foundation, among others, came to meet the kid, but Warrior continued to blow him off. Yeah, that's pretty bad stuff.
@cjvaye99
@cjvaye99 Жыл бұрын
that's really bad. he couldn't even be arsed to take 1 minute and just say hi to the kid. Idk about that story but maybe he wasnt in character and thought it was inappropriate to meet someone not in full warrior gear? that's the only thing I can think of as to why that happened.

Recall watching an interview with someone who wrestled alongside Warrior. He stated that there was a lot of jealousy directed towards the Warrior, but he was just a straight up great guy. There's a pretty big error here. It said that Roberts would have had "a main event run against the champ," but that it was derailed because of the incident in which Warrior held up McMahon at Summerslam 91. That doesn't make sense, as the Warrior lost the title at the Royal Rumble six months earlier. Either the Snake feud was cancelled for another reason, or Warrior wouldn't have been champ during it.
@dildonius
@dildonius 2 жыл бұрын
The narrator is probably working with information they got straight from Jake Roberts' mouth (likely info spouted from Roberts' mouth before he got clean and finally turned his shit around too) and made the rookie af mistake of taking it at 100% face-value. Jake Roberts at the time got a seat on the WWF booking committee for 2 reasons - firstly because despite everything he has always had an immaculate mind for pro wrestling booking and promos; secondly (and FAAAAAR more importantly in terms of why he got that job) because the infamous WWF "Ring Boy" scandal had just happened, forcing Vince & WWF to fire Pat Patterson, leaving a spot on the committee that needed to be filled. From day 1 the intention was just for Jake to hold that spot until the aftermath of the scandal blew over, at which point they'd quietly re-hire Pat, give him his spot back and continue business as usual. Which is what they did. I'm pretty sure Jake ultimately quit WWF altogether because he didn't get a pay raise after being put on the booking committee (maybe he also tried to book himself to become WWF Champion too, but if he did naturally Vince would've veto'd it because he was Jake Roberts and it was friggin' 1991). And then later in life he just used Helwig's spectacular career suicide as a scapegoat for his own self destructive ways. Kinda like how Roberts blames his whole entire history of drug addiction on the fact that when he had his feud against the upcoming Honky Tonk Man, Honky whacked him with his guitar during a TV segment, which Roberts claimed injured his neck thus putting him on painkillers thus lifelong drug addiction cuz of lifelong neck pain. Even though Roberts had failed tons of wellness checks (for all sorts of drugs including coke) before WWF even hired Honky, even though Roberts wrestled fine every day after that TV segment, and even though Honky gimmicked the fuck out of that guitar so much (by cutting a zillion slices into it with a razor blade then using a sharpie to cover up the exposed wood) that he was worried merely picking it up would cause it to fall apart. I'm glad Jake has finally gotten his shit together and seems to be on the road to dying genuinely happy after having led such a brutal fucking life.....but anything he ever said before getting well (and honestly even a lot of what he says even now after getting well) should be instinctively considered horseshit.

The fans liked the Ultimate Warrior more than the guys who worked with him, but that is true of many other pro wrestlers. Many wrestlers liked Warrior. Among them were: Kerry Von Erich, Bad News Brown, Hawk, Animal, Axe, Smash, Warlord, Haku, Hercules, Kamala, Orlando Jones, Shawn Michaels, Marty Jannetty, Owen Hart, Al Perez, and Sensational Sheri. If you watch a lot of past interviews from when these people were alive, they actually speak "highly" of Ultimate Warrior. He used to pay for Kamala's hotel rooms, because Kamala was only paid $30k a year, which got eaten up quickly on the road. Warrior also "meticulously" went over the spots with Sheri Martel to make sure that he didn't injure her during his matches with the Macho King.

For anyone who says Warrior wasn't a draw..... When Warrior became IC Champ in 1988, he averaged 2,000 more fans than what The Honky Tonk Man drew previously. His spring and summer of 1989 feud with Rick Rude drew big right alongside Savage vs Hogan, didn't matter which match was main eventing, the building was packed. From my count, they main evented at least 16 shows with 12,000 or more fans in attendance, and that's just what i could find personally.This feud was so hot, it convinced Vince to go with Warrior as Champion. Warrior's September 1989 match with Andre The Giant at MSG was the last main event to sell out the Garden until 1996. In fact aside from Hogan and Savage, nobody drew more money at MSG for Vince than Warrior from the 88-91 time period. Main Evented Wrestlemania 6 - 67,000 fans. Warrior's WWF Title run wasn't Hogan level, but he did outdraw Randy Savage's 1988-89 run based on numbers i have. Warrior was just under 10,000 based on 74 shows, while Savage averaged 8,500, based on 81 shows. Warrior's feud with The Undertaker outdrew the Hogan vs Slaughter WWF Title program in 1991. Not only that, but this rivalry was probably the most important feud, to the growth of the Undertaker's career. TV Ratings in the WWF Dropped off in the weeks after Warrior vanished in 1991, by over half a point on average.In fact, you can trace the beginning of the WWF's ratings and attendance downfall (That got really bad by the end of 92) right to this time. You can easily find these numbers online. When Warrior returned at Wrestlemania 8, the 60,000 in the building went ballistic, clearly, they wouldn't mind buying a ticket to see him. Advertised Main Event Summerslam 92 - 80,000 fans Wrestlemania 12, almost a quarter of the building went home after getting to see Warrior's return. They paid for their tickets to see one man and one man only. This is a fact. His debut on Raw on April 15 1996 set ratings records for that time, with a 4.8 overall rating for the show. Warrior's debut on Nitro on August 17 1998 smashed Raw on that night. Nitro scored a 5, while Raw got a 4.2. Nitro had only beaten Raw 3 times, in the previous 17 weeks.

An example of how there's your presence and character combined with the athletic, acrobatic fights and how they are both important but if you are really good at one side it can compensate for being weak on the other side. I sometimes come home and watch ultimate warrior promos over and over like high level comic book poetry and i always end it with a hig child like smile on my face. I used to consider wwe as stupid hick crap. Now ive gone back and seen some of the those old shows and marvel at the creativity and live acrobatic theatrics. Any single element was pushing boundaries like practical effects or magic style tricks, or live speeches, and acting sequences, live acrobatic choreographed fights, or how about even just the logistics and equipment required. And then all those things seemlessly put together to make a crowd of young red blooded boys go crazy with joy and some kind of primal magical fulfillment of seeing your hero larger than life before you. Its pretty amazing actually. It requires the skill of an army of artistic geniuses fanatically delivering senseless entertainment that we all intimately and spiritually identify with and if it doesnt reveal any hidden truths it sure celebrates a primal need for glorious combat. It may not be beneficial to watch but it sure is a great break from rhe complexity of the real world. I think if an artist can make a picture of something silly like a shark dragging someone off a raft or a general dying surrounded by his men and have that considered art because of the skill involved then no one has a good excuse to not consider 'professional wrestling' as a form of art as well.

Well they both probably were during their time there. It's a natural result of being non-wrestling fans coming into the world of late-1980s pro wrestling from the world of bodybuilding. The difference is that Sting eventually found a deep love for the art of professional wrestling, became a fan, and turned it into a genuine career whereas Helwig never ever saw it as anything more than a big fat paycheck and a ticket to superstardom. Also while Sting's prima-donna nature was likely insufferable in his early 20s, the fact that he was like that is ultimately the reason why once he aged & matured, and once he'd had a bit of humility kicked into him, and once he found his footing and his niche in "The Business," he proved to have such a vast wealth of charisma and staying power. Whereas Helwig's shyness & reservedness evolved into a sullen & self-absorbed nature once HE came into his own.

He basically just ran around, shook the ropes and weakly clotheslined people. And did a dangerous gorilla press slam that likely injured people. He had no wrestling moves or wrestling holds. The real story is that Vince McMahon had(/has) a fetish for body builders, and Jim Hellwig fit that role perfectly and so he was pushed as THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR, a younger "body guy" to succeed Vince's original WWF "body guy", Hulk Hogan. But Warrior turned out to be a clumsy excuse of an athlete. I swear, you would be shocked if you saw the Warrior try to play baseball, football, or basketball, and see him fail epically at them all, because the guy was just a glamour magazine-cover body-builder with zero athletic skill, and not at all a WRESTLER. As far as Warrior's personality is concerned, I would avoid the fans too, if I had to put 4 hours into my weight training "in the middle of the night", and then get maybe 2 hours of sleep, before getting up to catch my flight to the next town. Pro wrestling is a grind, even when guys aren't keeping their bodies fit. For the guys who had to pump iron, being on the road was 10 times more demanding. Guys like Greg Valentine, Honky Tonk Man, Jake Roberts, and Bastion Booger, just "let themselves go". So, they could be a lot more "fan-friendly", than a guy like Warrior, who had to be at the gym within minutes of leaving the arena -- just to get back to his hotel in time to get 2 to 3 hours of sleep, if he was lucky.

This is 100% the spot-on truth brother, i was there that day in the building watching this match live. It's harder to hear on the tapes and DVD etc, but it was so loud in that building that night, people were crying when Hogan and Warrior hugged. Hogan fans sitting right in front of me were crying and clapping at the same time. People were chanting 'WARRIOR, WARRIOR" as we were all trying to leave the building. I remember some guys climbing up onto a structure with a Warrior poster and screaming 'It's the UWF Now, The Ultimate Warrior Federation" LOL. I still have my ticket and a Warrior shirt, although WAY too small now. Those old timers that were bashing Warrior 20 years ago would have stabbed you in the back for a quarter in their day. Jealous Hypocrites.

I have heard horror stories about Jim Hellwig as a person and I have heard stories of him being incredibly kind. I think he is both, just like the rest of us. What I don't like about other wrestling personalities having so much to say about The Warrior is that it's clearly political stories told by Jim's enemies, and he made a lot of enemies in the business. Now ask yourself, do you want to be defined by only your enemies, because your enemies are going to have a lot of crap to say about you, or would you like to also be judged by some of the good you did as well? Here's some of the good....us fans loved him. We didn't know about his character. We didn't know the backstage politics. We didn't know if he was a homophobe or racist or loved his mama. Why didn't we know? Because we didn't care. As kids we tuned in to watch wrestling. And one of the reasons I tuned in to wrestling was because The Ultimate Warrior was there. He was the 'product' I wanted to watch. For the last nearly 30 years we've heard all these wrestling personalities break kayfabe and air their grievances, thus pulling back the curtain and trying to destroy the man's legacy with all this dirty laundry. I'm not saying any of it is untrue. It might all be true. We fans should have never known about it. The product is the Warrior, not the man Jim Hellwig. Any attempt to tarnish a wrestling product by breaking all kayfabe and exposing all of the business is completely political and hypocritical. You take any of those personalities like Bruce Pritchard or Jim Cornette or Jim Ross, you have no idea the absolutely heinous things they have done in life that they don't want anyone to know about. These men have also done great good in their life. But I don't want to know about it. They are all wrestling products on the screen for me to enjoy.

He was so over he threatened, equaled, and eventually took Hulk Hogan's spot. Crowds were insane for him, and that's what makes a great pro wrestler. What happened afterward with Warrior is a different story, but by 91 he was iconic, and nobody besides maybe Goldberg in WCW, was ever in that position with Hogan during his Prime, to truly go over as the next top star.

@@lewis9702 Incorrect.ALL Pro Wrestlers are Athletes, to say Ultimate Warrior had no Athleticism would be like saying The Road Warriors had no Athleticism. It's just silly to say. "Wrestling Ability" as a term used is up for debate. If let's say a great "technical wrestler" strings together a sequence of moves and it's spectacular, yet the fans sit on their hands and don't react. Is that guy a good pro wrestler? Truth is, that guy probably won't last long. The problem most had with him is that he wasn't married to the business and second or third generation like many of his peers. It was a club to them, something they needed to protect so they hated a guy who was pushed because of a look because they felt he was undeserving. The only people who seem to say bad things or have bad stories are his peers and not the fans. Most fans when I was a kid loved him and anyone who met him, including myself when I was 6 or 7 found him soft spoken and kind. I have no doubt the pressures of fame, the road and all the drugs and drink guys use to cope with that got to him as it would anyone. The temptations too as Bret Hart brags about cheating on his wife all over his book as many other wrestlers slept with women in different towns and countries. I never saw not wanting to play the games on the road or care about the business as much as guys who grew up in it as a problem though. Many wrestlers also spoke highly of him and how he took care of the boys. Kamala spoke a lot of how he worked with Hogan and made a fraction of what he was making. He said Warrior regularly let the boys use his limo which he got the use of as the champion. He also found out Kamala was staying in a craphole hotel because he wasn't making enough to afford better and told him to stay with him as he gets complimentary 5 star hotels and a limo. He wasn't about the BS and the politics but there are stories of him taking care of the boys. He had some regrets for sure. Jake Roberts said they talked for a while at the HOF and he apologised for treating him badly back then and was very complimentary and respectful. Seems a few wrestlers spoke with him and ironed out their differences but then started backstabbing again after he died by saying the same stories lol.

“Every man’s heart one day beats its final beat. His lungs breathe their final breath. And if what that man did in his life makes the blood pulse through the body of others, it makes them bleed deeper and something larger than life, then his essence, his spirit, will be immortalized.” He probably had some health problems and knew the clock was ticking. He didn’t look too good during his promo either. He was always all over the place with his promos but his last one was eerily on point. It’s like he knew this was it and he decided to go out on his own terms, make sure his legacy was shaped by himself and not a bunch of administrators at WWE.

Never met him personally but was a big wrestling fan back in the 90's(who born in the 80's wasn't?). My dad traveled regularly playing softball and bowling and was really good at both sports for an amateur. He was matched up against The Ultimate Warrior in either Nevada or Florida while playing one of the sports and got a signed picture for me. I remember I got into trouble in school the week before he left for throwing rocks at a window and when he came back he gave me the picture. It read like 'Hey Dustin, stay out of trouble!' or something similar. So not only did he sign for my dad, he'd apparently had a conversation with him regarding our family. I don't know what this video is about to say, but I'm not sure I believe it if it is negative! My step-mom said the picture was lost in a fire that was somehow localized to only my childhood possessions after my dad passed when I was 9.
