I had one. Lost it on an 100 mph roll over and side pole crash. As you can imagine it got wrecked but it saved my life. w210 would remain special for me. Also it is the last E class that famous chief engineer Bruno Sacco designed. He retired in 1999 after completing facelift of w210 and introduction of w202 c class and w220 s class.

I've been following your channel for a while now and a few months back I bought a nice W210 E55, so it's really cool to see you giving it some attention. I love it for the same reasons you mentioned - it's super rare, it's pretty simple and reliable, and it's got that old-school Mercedes design that is more about restraint and quality than flashiness. Most importantly, it comes equipped with some of the best wheels ever designed - AMG Monoblocks!

Man the w210 is such a boss car - especially the AMG version. Love these massive monoblock wheels and the distinctive 4 round headlights. The car came out when i was a kid.. im 24 now, and i hope that someday an E55 210 will be parked in my garage. The fact that they are so hard to find in good condition, just makes the car even more special and appealing. Would take this over a E39 m5 any day!

Actually, every panel forward of the A-pillars was changed in the facelift. The leading edge of the hood was dropped nearly an inch. This is where they wanted it initially, but the inline six in the early E320 required a slightly higher hood line. The move to the M112 V6 allowed for the sleeker hood line.

Man these W210s are amazing cars. My dad’s a car dealer and got an E430 like every other car he sells and I said shit let me take it for a drive and fell in love. The insanely impressive handling, the subtle yet handsome look and enough power to have some fun made me love it. Sadly he sold the car and I’m hoping to get an E55 for myself now. A w210 E55 in this same video spec, r230 SL55, w220 s600, R129 SL600, and a 560sec are the dream garage 🙏🏽

I bought a 2001 E55 AMG in June, 2018. I had about $15k to spend, and had looked at several of these. Many of them were much nicer than the one I finally decided to purchase - but let me tell you why. RUST. I was willing to travel anywhere in the US to get my hands on the perfect specimen. I found several, but the current owners were driving them during winters, even though they had no visible rust. One day I found one just 1 hour away from my home outside Chicago that caught my eye, it was originally from Arizona and had seen a lot of sand, but never any salt or snow. Picked it up for $4k.. And YES, it needed a lot of work, it was neglected, but the underbody was perfect. Not a single rusted nut or bolt anywhere. To me, that makes all the difference in the world. The car also had 190k Miles.. Doesn't matter. I've been going through it and fixing up everything - completely new suspension components, seals/gaskets/sensors, plugs and wires and filters, tires, radiator, hoses, tensioners/belts, and I even replaced the transmission. Just got it out of storage today.. It will never see a salty snowy road.. I'll continue fixing it up until it drives/handles like brand new and then I will drive it until the motor explodes. When that happens, I will either rebuild or upgrade to a 211 motor (although I'd prefer to keep it stock), and repaint the car while I'm at it.. These cars are not the fastest thing on the street, but they have no problem keeping up with or beating mustangs and camaros from the same era. They have power. And they have an AMAZING engine note at those high RPMs, the sound of real German engineering. At above 5k RPM it just sounds heavenly, quite brutal yet refined, and it pulls, HARD. For a heavy, 4-door luxury sedan with naturally aspirated motor, you can't ask for much more power. The wide staggered wheels and low profile tires make it annoying to drive on slow and uneven roads, or in slow-moving rush hour traffic. You feel all the bumps. But on the open road, it feels incredibly smooth and has extraordinary stability. 60 MPH feels like you're driving along at 35. 80 feels like 55.. 90 to 120 MPH and it feels like it's glued to the road. This car is at it's happiest being driven above 60mph. It's made for the highway. It will, however, handle curves and sharp turns incredibly well for it's size and weight. I've owned several Mercedes, and this is by far the best. It feels solid, safe, stable, and confident. It's quiet as a kitten when you drive it like a grandma, yet is ready to fly at any time when you stomp that pedal to the floor. I could drive this car across the country without issue, and that's another thing that makes it exceptional - it's a Benz, not a racecar. It's got 4 doors, plenty of seating space, great level of comfort, plenty of trunk space, and you could flip this car at 120MPH and live to tell about it if your seatbelt is on. Classic German Luxury Muscle Sedan. No turbo, no GPS, no air-ride suspension. No backup camera, no paddle-shifters, no 8 speed transmission. No cheap plastic interior, no low-quality parts. It's still dripping a bit of oil from the passenger-side valve cover, and I'll enjoy fixing it. I enjoy every minute I spend driving this car, it's an absolute blast to drive, even when just cruising along at a stable speed on a highway in the middle of nowhere. It's the last of the TRUE Affalterbach AMGs. A couple things you can expect if you decide to own one? LOTS of tires. The staggered tire design causes these things to EAT rear tires, especially if you do a lot of city or around-town driving. 10k miles max for rear tires. Spend $600 per tire and you may get 15k but that's really pushing it. There's no way around this. Next? The gas mileage. Especially as the motor ages. I can squeeze out 19mpg driving normally without excessive acceleration. My average driving causes me to get about 15. When I drive it harder, I get 12.5 max. Best gas mileage I've been able to pull out of it was 20.8 on the highway at 75mph over a stretch of 20 miles.. The cars also take a whopping 8 quarts of oil. That's not cheap when you use synthetic. $100 DIY oil changes including a decent filter. Also, the cars are super reliable, but as they age, hoses and wiring becomes an issue if not maintained. Vacuum and breather hoses, EGR hoses, brake vaccuum hoses, headlight wiring, and coolant hoses can add up to a lot of money. I replaced every single hose in/out of the radiator, all breather and crankcases hoses, a brake booster vacuum hose, and all EGR and idle-related hoses and the cost for the parts alone was nearly $600. I used all MB parts original parts. I did 16 plugs with brand new Magnacore wires and that cost me about $320. The fuel filter was cheap. Many parts that I expected to cost a lot were only a few dollars. So far I've put $8k into it (excluding the purchase price). It needs about $2k more until it drives/handles perfectly (no knocks/rattles/etc) and runs perfectly with no leaks or glitches. I am going to need a fuel pump soon. I need to take the sunroof out and clean the rails, they're gummed up so it opens slowly and hardly closes. Mercedes would tell you that's the motor, but that's a lie. WIth the cost of purchase and all the parts I've bought, including a transmission rebuild (which I sent to california to an expert), I'm almost $13k into this car. When it's all said and done, with all new components, I'll be around $15k, rust-free, and have done it all myself. I know the car inside and out. And you cannot buy that for $25k so I think I'm ahead of the game. I would like to keep it forever if possible. It's one of the all-around best machines Mercedes ever made.

@@Seafiftyfive They're great cars.. I like the look of the W210 E55 a lot. They're also really easy to work on. If you can work on a car, this is one that you should learn to repair and maintain yourself. Even the suspension has an extremely simple design - no struts. Everything comes apart easily, and goes together easily. Congratulations I hope you enjoy your E55.

They are all rusty in the UK, many still go on to well over 100000 miles though so I wouldn't make such a big deal of it, mine has had welding done underneath and has rusty door bottoms but it has nearly a quarter of a million miles on it now and i'm not afraid to drive it when it rains, in fact it's sitting out in the rain and wind (at the marina where i keep my rusty old boat) with the back full of firewood and tools right now, mine gets used properly. lol

You pretty much nailed it with your great write up. I just returned home from a round 600 mile round trip from St Louis to Memphis, there on Friday and back on Sunday. My 2002 e55 just loved it. I enjoyed it so much I found my way to this page. Totally agree about these cars loving the high(er) speeds. So smooth, and the power nevers ends. I could cruise just as fast as I dared due to speed limits. The car is so stable and happy at speed. It's obviously made for the Autobahn, not just the Missouri Autobahn! I'm surprised your mileage is so poor. I average well over 21mpg with mixed driving. This weekend trip I averaged almost 22mpg, with plenty of around town jaunts. Great cars.

No e55 over here yet. My Dad has a W210 turbodiesel, my Mom drives a W210 e320 4matic wagon, my sister had a W210 e420 (retired due to rust at almost 300K miles), I drove an e300 turbodiesel for 10s of thousands of miles, my Dad also has a W210 e320 4matic with 280K + miles. Only issue with them is rust. Very solid reliable cars. Handling and braking feels way more communicative and pure compared to both the w211 that succeeded it and the w124 that preceded it. At least on the bread and butter models.

Combining the M113 non kompressor engine, with the 722.6 transmission, and then no airmatic, no SBC.. Rust is basically the only "real" issue, although it's admittedly a bad one. Really hope you get around to doing the in depth video you teased, I'm sure it would be a great watch. Cheers

I'm a lucky owner of two W210. First is 2001 E320 in designo green leather, wood trim interior that I bought from local classic Mercedes collector. At 100k miles even my mechanic noted how immaculate the paint and mechanical parts were. It must've been an overhaul project. I bought it for $10k for my old man to cruise around in his retirement. Another one is 2001 E55 in silver, 2 owners and 150k miles. It was the classic case of buying it form a retired man in his 70s. I appreciate these W210 so much. I've owned over 40 different cars and the only three that never left my collection are these W210s and a R129 SL500.

I agree, but I still think the E39 M5 will outshine it in the used market in the years to come. I had a 01 e39 M5 and sometime regret it bc I know it’s gone up in value I think the next collectible will be the w211 E55AMG. Still fairly simple (compared to the newest MB) but still holds the classic lines and has (still to this day) earth shattering power from a luxury sedan. I bought my w211 E55AMG bc of your videos and a couple other youtubers. Mine is an 06 in iridium silver, like yours. Love it

As far as unit prices go, you have a point. But due to complex engines of both e39 and w211, it will be harder and harder to find clean examples while w210s would run like a champ.

That's if the BMW interior lasts the distance plus the paints clearcoats seem to go on the beemers first too unfortunately which kills their secondhand value, one for sale down the road for $3500 Australian dollars but it's an absolute bomb, I tried to get it started for the guy but he said it had a few electrical issues and he'd given up.

Lovely video, the W210 reminds me of my 2002 BMW E46 325i sedan. Bought mine with 94k with three owners. I think it was the last of the solid bmw 3 series ever made before the E90 with the magnesium straight six engines... Whats the soundtrack in the video?

I believe the W208 CLK55 (and probably the 430 as well) will follow suit, thanks to coupe styling and rarity. I want to make the claim that the W208 CLK55 cabriolet would also be the only truly accessible "end-of-era" AMG cabrio, but I'm not sure about the sales numbers compared to the R129 AMG models... Both are very rare. But then again, the price of a R129 AMG would surely outweigh the price of a W208 AMG. The other model I believe will truly become a collector's classic is the 560SEC. Demand's definitely going up...

As a W208 '55 owner, I'm surprised they are still largely overlooked. Perhaps its' due to the low production #'s?

My dad had a 2001 E55 with literally every option, even the rare parking sensor graphic and rear sunshade... it was one of the first cars I ever drove and I loved every moment driving it, until dad sold it to buy a 2001 BMW M5. I have to say that I prefer the M5's ferocity and manual transmission, but I still miss the E55. Like Doug, it's the only car I miss driving. Nothing could beat the subtle but aggressive styling with the square monolithic lines and deep-dish AMG wheels, and the ultra shiny silver paint. Late 90s Benzs had the thickest and shiniest silver paint, even the M5 looks dull parked next to the E55.

When dad sold the E55 we dropped the car off at the buyer's house, with me driving it and dad following along in the M5 to take me home after the sale. At the last stoplight before the house we raced as soon as the light turned green and even with an automatic transmission and an open diff, the AMG still pulled out barely ahead of the BMW. The acceleration felt so much different between the two cars though, the Benz's power just keeps building and building until redline whereas the M5 starts off with punishing power that stays strong before fading after 6,000 RPM.

I think the supercharged V8 era will become classics as well. especially the C215. mainly because its design nods back to a time where mercedes designed the roof not to flow into the rear quarter and it was divided. Plus, mercedes will never supercharge another AMG again. That in itself will make the v8 kompressors a collector car
