The last U.S. presidential election was held in November 2020 and the main candidates were Joe Biden for the Democratic Party and Donald Trump for the Republican Party. Almost four years later, the leading candidates are once again the same. This despite the fact that the American public is not as enthusiastic about a rematch between Biden and Trump. In an early 2024 poll, 67% of respondents said they are tired of seeing the same candidates in presidential elections and want to see someone new. And in another 2022 poll, 39% said they would like to see more political parties to choose from in the United States. Not surprisingly, for the past 168 years, the president of the United States has been either a Democrat or a Republican. No third party candidate has come even close to the presidency. On the other hand, more than half of American adults think Biden's presidency has hurt the country on the cost of living and immigration, while nearly half think Donald Trump's presidency hurt the country on voting rights and election security, relations with other countries, abortion laws and climate change. But if people are so tired of seeing the same candidates and show interest in other political options, why has America always had only two candidates from the same two political parties? why is there no room for other parties? And why is it so hard for this to change?
