How to clean and maintain your Sawyer Squeeze water filter:
1) Use your Sawyer Squeeze to filter clean water into a water bottle or bucket.
2) Using the syringe provided with your filter, back-flush your water filter by driving water backwards through the filter. Repeat until the water comes out clean and clear.
3) Firmly tap your water filter against your palm several times.
4) Back-flush your filter again until the water, once again, comes out clean and clear.
Do this as frequently as possible and your Sawyer Squeeze can last you a lifetime!

I went out and bought a Sawyer after I heard them on The Outdoor Evolution podcast. They mentioned how they'd donated filters to Canadian First Nations reserves that had boil water advisories for over 20 years. The Canadian government keeps promising they'll get treatment plants built (or fix the broken ones) and they just never get around to it. So Sawyer stepped up and gave them filters. Many thanks to Sawyer for everything they do around the world, and even right here in North America, to give people clean water to drink. And for all of us backpackers who have the privilege to buy them, so we also have clean water while we're out on trail. Thank you, Miranda and crew, ❤ for showing us this. And for showing us just how many times we should be backflushing our filters! 😲

Two SASR (Australian Special Forces) and a handful of UNHCR workers I'm friends with all use the Sawyer Squeeze or the Katadyn Vario, and they advise against every other water filter brand out there - That should tell you all you need to know about Sawyer and Katadyn and their 'competition' (if you can even call them that).

That's great to hear. The Canadian government's lack of response to giving our first nation clean drinking water is inexcusable. I have a larger capacity filter for our family's backpacking but I will buy a Sawyer as backup for our day hikes.

When you went into Maria's home to do the GIS survey - I kinda lost it. When she went in to tearfully say goodbye to all the people in her home and she made a point to hug the man behind the camera ; . ; that would be so overwhelming to have so many people in your home, asking you questions and filming you, she was so gracious and kind and open. Truly remarkable.

As a honduran, I want to thank firstly sister Larraine for helping underprivileged people in my country. Secondly to SAWYER, for providing the means to improve people’s lives here, and lastly to you Miranda, for pointing me in a direction (previously unknown to me) in which I can also help. I am an REI member, and on my next trip to the USA, I’ll make sure to buy some filters to try and replicate sister’s Larraine work.

I'm not crying, you're crying! No, wait, we're BOTH crying! This touches my public health heart in so many ways. I especially love that, while of course Sawyer plays a critical role in this and should be recognized (will be ordering them for my home emergency kit and bugout bag STAT) you kept the focus on the Honduran woman without whom the filters would just be so much plastic trash. Too many times corporations and organization parachute in like great white saviors and fail to make the connections needed to make their donations and programs meaningful and successful--so again, Kudos to Sawyer, BUT yes, Miranda, you nailed it, it is the women who take on the responsibility for filtering water not just for their own but for other households and for training other water women that actually make the program work. Thank you for recognizing and highlighting that. Going to go sob in a corner now...

I was deciding on my first backpacking water filter a few months ago. I seen a similar video from another KZfaqr Dan Becker in Africa. Bought a Sawyer squeeze the next day. We definitely take clean water for granted here in the USA. We literally poop in purified water. I try and remember that every time I’m having a bad day.

Sawyers PR team is doing a great job sharing the work they do. Not a knock at all, loved watching this video and Dan Beckers. When I visit my family in Brasil, those office water dispensers are in almost every home. Never thought about buying Sawyer filters so they don't need to keep buying water. Will definitely be bringing a bunch in my luggage next trip.

I love that tip about banging the filter on your palm. It makes a huge difference. I have a relatively new filter that I have taken on a handful of trips. I actually used it this morning on a slightly longer day hike and hadn't cleaned it yet after getting home. The water I filtered on the trail this morning was from a nice clear pool of water in a creek. I back flushed it once and got a little grime, but it went clear relatively quick. I tapped a few times and back flushed again. It was worse than the first back flush. There was definitely gunk and grime in my filter from previous trips. This is a game changer. Thanks!

Thank You Miranda, Loved this segment, it's not just about women helping other women; it's all about people helping other people to the basic human right of clean drinking water! We are in the process of selecting a water filter for backpacking, Sawyer's work in these Latin American countries (and elsewhere) just sold us on Sawyer filters.

Great video. My big takeaways are, water is a human right and being able to buy a new filter when I don't take care of the old one is a privilege. The visual for the impact of the cleaning process was fantastic. It's easy to say "clean your filter" but seeing the process combined with the proof of how long the filter can last if you just take care of it was fantastic.

This made me mildly tear up, haha. This is awesome work, "Water with Blessings" and Sawyer! How wonderful to help provide clean water for people who need it. For all those people here saying this is just an ad and Sawyer is pushing its products, so what if it is? The product works great, and they're doing great things for many different communities. How can that be a bad thing? I like knowing that companies I support do good with their profits.

I realize that this is all a sacrifice to the gods of algorithm with the title of the video being least informative and most marketing-like, but I wish it could still convey a bit more what the video is about. 95% of the reason I clicked on it was suspiciously long duration (knowing Miranda videos), and I'd be sad if I had missed it only because of the title that has 'BUY' in it and not a clue as to what an important and pivotal initiative it is REALLY about. All that being said, a great video and tremendous work that they are doing and you guys did to highlight it, spreading awareness. Cheerios

Bravo! Thanks for promoting the concept of clean water in poorer countries. I have been involved in promoting water projects through Church World Service. In 2006 and again in 2007 we got to visit water projects throughout Kenya and also in Uganda. It was amazing how a simple well or other water project which provides clean water can totally transform a community. There are the obvious health benefits, but also it frees people in many ways, especially the women and girls. They have the responsibility of getting water and can end up walking miles every day to fetch water. With a local clean water supply, much time is freed up for other activities and girls get to stay in school longer. God bless you for doing this video.

I have known Sr Loraine for 35-40 years since she taught my children here in Western Ky. We here have supported Sr ever since she started Warter Women. That has been our Lenten Alms giving project to help provide clean water to those in need. Sr Lorine has been a tremendous person of service to those in need.

This is an extraordinary video! I have been aware in the past that Sawyer does a lot to benefit others with clean water but I had no idea of the scale and this was just at one country. I was also astonished to see how long these filters last with proper care. I watch lots of long-course hikers and many will get several new ones along the AT or PCT or others. It's great to know the right way to care for them!

An interesting design feature of the Sawyer is that you don't NEED to use the syringe to back flush. If you use a water bottle with a sports cap (like the Smart Water, for example), it will fit into the backflush spot and you can squeeze it to back flush your water. Obviously you'll want to not only use clean water, but a bottle that has only held filtered water so you don't accidentally cross contaminate your filter. I love my Sawyer filter and seeing this, I love it even more.

Miranda what a wonderful experience… I am going to buy one and make it last for years.. I went with my son to Colombia which was a wonderful experience to me.😍 Not knowing any Spanish at all. Another great video about the Sawyer bucket program. I first saw the video put out by @danbecker. What I liked about yours, Miranda, was the in-depth look at the process at getting the filters to communities and then educating the water women. I am heading to a remote area of Nicaragua and want to bring this program to that community. I believe Sawyer and Amparo International are in communication. This is such an important humanitarian mission. I’ll be sharing the link of this video with the founder of Amparo. Thank you for sharing your experience.

36:29 I just watched your entire video and I had tears in my eyes. I own a Sawyer Water Filter but haven’t used it “for real” yet. I mainly got it for emergencies. However, I’m recovering from an ankle replacement surgery and I love to hike so I’m going to use it on the trail. But that’s not the most amazing thing. Just this morning a group from Knoxville, TN (where I live) left on a mission trip to Honduras. They will be work with those struggling with addiction in communities and places of incarceration. I would have been on that trip except for my surgery. I can’t wait to tell them about the “Water Women” and share your video. Thank you for posting this and I’m forever a fan of “Sawyer”!! “May you be richly blessed for your care and compassion. Great video. I hiked in La Tigra National Park back in 1999 when our family our family volunteered to build housing with Church World Service. I am also a hydrologist and I took a simple water filter which screwed on as a cap for a water bottle. The group thought I was crazy, but I wanted to test my filter in less than pristine conditions (not like our Colorado mountain streams). I drank from taps, from rivers, from wells, while the rest of the group drank only bottled water. I was fine.

I am a firm believer in Sawyer. This is a great video. Too many have no idea how lucky we are to have clean, fresh and safe water. Very touching celebration. You always have to watch out when visiting these areas because too often end up leaving all you stuff behind, including your heart for them, because there is such a need. Awesome that the daughters of one of the ladies have received a good education too. Miranda is so tender hearted. Literally this is saving people's lives. Sawyer should be proud of their efforts.

We were just in Tegucigalpa in August. I recognized the airport and some of the landscaping coming into the city. Our missions center had guard dogs that were set loose at night too. We spent a week there and provided a medical brigade at a church on the west mountain. A hawk watched our van enter the neighborhood each day we were there. A hawk is a gang member with a cell phone to protect the community. Because they recognized our van and the help we were bringing we were waved on in. I’m sure when the van you were in entered a neighborhood you got the same treatment because of the work the women are doing to bring clean water to the people, you probably got a pass and may never have known it. What a joy to see your video and know there are others making a huge difference in Honduras.

My husband and I did a Safe Water Sabbatical. I did a small fundraiser to buy 15 bucket filters and gave them to families and villages as we traveled. Your video was absolutely fantastic! It motivates me as a hiker to again give back. I was not a hiker at the time but I am now and just this weekend realized how blessed we are to filter stream water and what a privilege it is to have these filters. I have known for many many years what Sawyer filters do to help people out. This is one of the reasons why I buy this filter and the other reason is they are awesome. The only reason I have to replace my filters are in an usual cold spell came in and I wake up in the morning and everything is frozen solid, including my filter, which is never a good thing. I guess that’s one thing that people from Honduras don’t have to worry about.

I love seeing the different cultures, different experiences and just the joy of being able to have clean water and share that with their families. It is amazing to see a huge company do these things. To help in a world that is full of ugliness, especially when so many large corporations are only out for money and greed. It is is awesome to see this! You're the 2nd popular youtuber that's talked about Sawyer Squeeze filters and the work they're doing in third-world countries. Not that I mind. I think it's great they're working to provide clean water to so many people, and I've owned and used the Squeeze filter for years as a backpacker.
