Why I own (after years of searching) an Alpina Seastrong 10.

Enjoyed the contemplative nature of your video. We do not pick brands or grail watches so much as they pick us. Alpina is a great example of a long established independent Swiss brand that made quality niche watches which still survives but which will never be the same because of corporate ownership. Seeing the 1969 reference side by side with the modern reissue made it easy for me to see why you gravitated to the 1969 original. I have a 44mm Panerai and a 44.2mm Grand Seiko diver but I quite enjoy wearing my Rolex Oyster Perpetual and Eterna 34mm watches. The patented super compressor cases by Ervin Piquerez which dated back to the 1950s into the early 1970s were part of the dive watch revolution which led ultimately to the general dominance of sport watches. Commercial diving concerns gave way to a recreational diving boom as Europe and the U.K. came out of the hardship of the post-WW II era. People again had both the money and the leisure to engage in hobbies like diving. Your ruminations about watches and watch collecting are more interesting to me than nuts and bolts reviews. Thank you for your efforts.

Congratulations on your new Alpina watch. I'm a fan of Vintage dive watches myself, but mostly to scared to deal with the risk of vintage watches. Although my first Seiko is 19years old by now.

Pete, always enjoy these type of reviews. That vintage champagne-colored dial is spectacular. Wish that shade would come back. Also a big fan of super-compressor style watches. Can see why you love it.

I own the Seastrong Heritage in white and love it. I actually prefer the date window at the odd location, gives the watch more character and interest. It's such a good looking watch that could easily be worn with a suit. Great concept for collecting, owning the homage and actual vintage watch. Now I want an Alpina 10!

It's wild, how different the original is from the modern remake. If Alpina revised and launched a more accurate reissue, it might be a "must get" for many folks.

That hour hand really makes it stand out. I don't like how the new version has done away with that.

The original changed over time - one version of the Seastrong 10 had the large arrow hour like mine, another has the arrow minute hand and smaller still hour hand of the new re-issue. I prefer this version, which was part of my hunt.

How did you find this watch? I happened to find one in South Africa in the late 1980s and have never seen one for sale ever again. Paul

Very nice. Did they source EPSA cases, which made the actual super compressor cases, or is it just a compressor-style case?

Im positive they are true EPSA cases, from the Alpina Website: "No wonder that the EPSA has been able to secure many well known watch manufacturers as its customers over the years. One of these customers - closing the circle, as it were - was Alpina. In 1967 the cooperative brought its highly regarded “Alpina 10” on to the market. The “Super Compressor“ case, water-resistant to up to twenty bar, housed the 572C automatic calibre. The extremely pressure-tight “Super Compressor“ case is instantly recognisable from the outside by the grid pattern on both crowns, and on the inner side of the case back by the stylised depiction of a diving helmet."

@@PeteMcConvill Thanks. I find the Super Compressors very interesting, but I’m did not know if Alpina used any of there cases.
