I'm surprised noone ever pointed out that by teleporting at the corners and placing a block you're actually making the walls half a meter bigger on every corner. That's because you're getting the coordinates for the corner, but then you're placing a block that stretches out half a meter in every direction

Thats why I select points from the center of an imaginary 1x1 m square at the edges. Mostly counts for buildings touching each other. If a build is alone, it doesnt hurt.

Well we’re only building down to the meter, so not a big problem, nothing that can be done about that anyways. Also, buildings aren’t always perfectly aligned with the Minecraft grid, so a wall could be off anywhere from nothing to a meter.

I mean considering the task is building 4 billion buildings, I don't think they're researching every individual house. Google maps + guesswork seems to be the limit. I love this project and hope one day I can help, but that leaves me a little curious as to what will happen with old buildings/versions of the map? Because for instance, I now live in a house, that 2 months ago did not exist, in a neighborhood that 6 months ago, did not exist. An entire neighborhood with 568 families (seperate houses) The builders themselves know where things are in their local area, but google maps doesn't get updated constantly, and construction is ALWAYS happening. Simply because I'm curious, has anyone thought about that/made backup plans? 🤷🏼‍♂️

you could try looking up the house on local real-estate websites in order to see historic photos, and potentially photos from inside which might at least tell you where the windows are.

I'm surprised this isn't more automated, I knew of the project but never saw anything about it till now. I'd have thought there was an algorithm that would automatically build most a house from Google maps and then people would go in and clean them up, this is incredible

I love how we are building the entire world in minecraft, but I feel like perhaps the trees obscuring everything could mean something. Perhaps not everything is meant to be seen at once, and we (as humans) must be able to understand and respect the mortal limitations.

The county assessor usually has building plans, sometimes with pictures after the building was completed as well. If you're lucky, your work is easier for counties which have this information online and for free.

I don't know if this is a stupid idea, but.. maybe we can make a form where people can upload coords then pictures of the buildings, with an algorithm somehow putting them into a sort of search engine where they can search a coord and see if it's logged or not-? Then afterwards one can even go back to unfinished builds in a few months to check if someone has posted an unfinished house/building.

Easy solution, look up the house address on realty sites. You can see the front, inside, everything. I am building my entire region in Project Zomboid and so far every house in my neighborhood (about 80 so far) are one to one replicas. Minus Zomboid's engine that doesn't allow diagonal walls or basements. Or hills... or any height map at all.......... ugh.............

You should make a copy of the world and make it a server so that people can go in and change their houses to look like they should if you can't see them instead of leaving them blank! But good job thats awesome

This is fairly simple stuff tbh, I think it'd be possible to create a tool that takes the google maps data at some coordinates and generate a sort of matching house using procedural generation
