We organized a manual transmission-only overland trip through some of Arizona's toughest trails to highlight the advantages and benefits of using a manual transmission vehicle off-road. All equipped with Centerforce clutches and flywheels, we traversed through Arizona's scenic backcountry and spoke to the various people on the trip to see why they prefer a stick shift vehicle for off-road and overland use.

Been driving manuals since I was 16 years old. I'm 63 now, and don't plan on stopping anytime soon. Oh yeah, I drive a 2018 jl unlimited sport s. Love it!

During a water crossing, if you change gears with a manual transmission you risk getting water in the clutch which can cause issues in the future. With an automatic transmission, however, you can change gears or stop driving and no water will find its way into the gearbox. This makes automatic transmissions the better choice for you if you know you’ll be facing a lot of water crossings with your 4×4.

@@Nigriffwhat a load of crap you use low range you don’t change gear in deep water I’ve had both once you know how to handle a manual it’s easier then auto you can tow start smash gear box lose all the oil you can still drive it just got to know what you’re doing I’ve been on hundreds of runs coming down or going up steep rocky trails manual is great even if you lose your brakes 1&2 low range you don’t need brakes coming down the steepest trails plus no over heated box you should try it you will never go back and by the way if water would affect your clutch you would never be able to drive it in the rain the only thing you never do is change gear in deep water on a manual as water will get between your clutch plate and flywheel

This is awesome! I know you guys just wrapped up the 2022 trip which looked awesome from the accounts I follow and yours on IG! I just got my center force dual friction clutch for my JKU and I’m stoked to be throwing that in soon!

A CF1 clutch was on of my first mods. Been running it for about 4 years now and it has held up to everything I have put it through. Next clutch will be the stage 3 with the flywheel. Thanks for the great products.

I agree with everything except for that last bit about fluid.. I had a manual trans completely seized on the input shaft bearing due to low fluid.. stranded on the side of the highway..

CenterForce was the first clutch I installed as an early inspiring mechanic on my 89 firebird. Well I didn’t torque the pressure plate bolts and it clicked for a good couple years. Lol Still hooked like crazy though

I've always preferred manual over auto, from my 1st car a 96 Camaro SS 6spd, to my current rig a 2012 Xterra Pro4X 6spd, and 2 5spd silverados and a 6 spd wrangler in between. Manuals have a huge advantage in the snow, last Jan. I drove up to the bottom of a hill with a current gen Ford Raptor stuck at the bottom, the owner even said "good luck" as I got ready to attempt the hill. He was pretty surprised to see my Xterra with bald 33" tires go up the hill like it wasn't shit. I've gotten up hills with a bunch of 4x4s stuck at the bottom in 2wd before and having driven automatic 4x4a before, having the manual made 100% of the difference.

I have the Centerforce high inertia flywheel and dual friction clutch on my 2012 Jeep JK. After only 18,000 miles, it is already slipping. Compare that to 114,000 miles that I got out of the factory clutch.

About to get a manual 2016 wrangler, just wanted to know how hot these manual transmissions get when on the trail. I know a guy who says his middle console (where the shifter, cup holder, etc) feels like it’s going to melt because of the heat coming from below. Any truth to that?

I'm not really seeing it tbh. Gotta admit I never was offroading but I drove manual my whole life(had an automatic Chevy Trans Sport for a few weeks though) and I'm just thinking that offroading with a manual will be just as nerve wrecking as driving a manual in a traffic jam. Like constantly for miles and miles without end you're playing with the clutch to get a few more yard forward while switching between gear 0(rolling/stop), 1 and 2 like a dozen times on just a few yard. It freaking sucks to drive a manual in stop and go mode. And isn't offroading nothing but stop and go work? Idk my thought is that I want to be laser focused on the trail and want to have direct and precise acceleration articulation. If I do X, Y happens. With a clutch it's kinda always a guessing game, at least/espacially if you're not on a flat road.

Maybe just a different kind of experience. These guys already know what they're doing and having to think about clutch control just adds a bit more of a challenge. Idk personally an automatic would be more enjoyable because there's no risk of stalling and you just add more throttle or brake whenever you need it

my 2012 frontier pro4x had the 6spd, and it was an awesome truck to drive, tons of fun. I was sad when the new frontier came out without a manual. Jeep got our money.
