Why we bought a SAILING BOAT Instead of a HOUSE

A few people have messaged us asking 'but why this?'- and to be honest, it's a really good question. With minimal larger boat sailing experience, fresh out of university and with our whole lives ahead- why did we pick a boat over a house?
So join us in this vid to hear a bit about why we ditched the traditional route of getting a mortgage and securing a property, and instead, have chosen a life of maintenance, risk, travel and freedom.

About Us
We are Becka and Zach, a couple who, in 2020, dreamt of sailing off into the big blue. Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn’t have a boat. The dream seemed not only unrealistic but pretty insane.
However, we worked hard, finished our degrees, worked as many hours as physically possible, saved with all our might, got experience and in March 2022 bought our very own sailboat, Teulu. Having little sailing experience and being a young couple, we have encountered a tonne of hurdles and made plenty of mistakes! but for every downfall, there has always been a reason to dust ourselves off and carry on.
We hope you can join us as we sail around the world and keep #bloodydoingit

I would ask"why not a boat", enjoy life while you can, it ends before you know it. I have wanted to sail for about 40 years now, put a job, then family first, now my wife is gone, family all on their own and I'm 75 wondering what happened to my sailing. I hope you have a wonderful life, spend the summer knifing through the waves traveling to all the places you want to see. Take care of each other, be safe and live YOUR life to the fullest.

There's a bit of both... Life, yes. But there's a lot of people that come back from a life of "adventure" and find themselves 50 with health problems, out of energy, out of money, no skills, no pension and no assets. It's not gonna be pretty going to work at McDonalds 6 out of 7 days just to be bitched at by 12 year olds and still never retire. Even worse if you're suddenly single, and everyone you knew has a family and is busy but you're alone in your little 1 bedroom with nothing to do on Christmas. I mean, the older I get the more I realise that life is about balance. Relationships, a stable financial situation, but also a fulfilling life all take time and effort, so better make a smart choice and don't neglect any of them. But hey, everyone does themselves.
@TeuluTribe

@@mysterioanonymous3206 all about balance for sure! However, I can say for certain, in the few months we have owned this boat, I have learnt more skills than I have in the last 5 years alone so don’t think we will be short on those! 😊

Good work both filming and learning to sail. A suggestion. When reducing sail as wind increases, start by reefing the main. On a ketch your main tends to push the boat over more and have less impact on speed and control. After the second reefing in the main, partly furl your headsail. Keep a little of the genoa out for as long as you can safely sail. You might find that sailing jib&jigger (without the main) is the most comfortable in 15 to 25 knot winds. Good luck and fair winds.

I bought my first house in 1997, and then massively upgraded to my dream neighborhood in 2000. And then I moved to Las Vegas5 years ago, for another incredible house. I love the land live, with road trips to National Parks in my car, and flying to Europe twice a year. And now I hope I can move up to business class, as I gradually somewhat retire from my dream job in IT. I fixed up my houses, and really enjoyed them. You are doing absolutely the right thing. I need to go off-shore sailing for a few days, but after that I got to get back to my house : ) Love your channel.

You’ll be planning your route out of Plymouth to much more exotic climes In no time at all. Well done both of you, it’s nice to see wise heads on young shoulders, for example, (patience) learning how to work with your particular boat, there is no reason in rushing headlong into a situation you’ll struggle with.

Great video, loved the excitement/terror that comes with sailing those first few times. You guys are doing great. Just remember you're running your own race, don't be afraid to reef early, you can always un do it when your out on the water and see what the winds doing. Your a two man crew on a big heavy yacht. You might find a reef and a partly furled Genoa is comfy for you. It's about sailing her efficiently and safely, not necessarily the fastest from A-B.

You are 100% right! In hindsight, we should have just dropped our main sail and continued on genoa and mizzen but thats ok 😊 We live and we learn. We were also going about 4 knots here, it just felt a lot faster 🤣

I take my hat off to you and wish i had the guts to live my dream instead of existing with regret. You have each other and a shared dream, what more could you ask for. Hhaha, i do sometimes look back at how we were when we first got the boat- i think the word 'intimidated' might spring to mind 🤣 and now we are anchoring and sailing in 17knots and leaving the marina by ourselves and fixing everything! Its sometimes really important to remember how far we have come, instead of dwelling on how far we still have to go!

When I was a teenager 40-50 years ago my then Girlfriend and I were friends with a slightly older couple in our sailing club. They had not long purchased their first house. On a visit one day they dropped the bombshell that they were selling the house and were thinking of buying a boat... we thought they were mad. A few years later, as we were settling into our 9 to 5s we would receive postcards from the Mediterranean or wherever... It did not seem so mad then. If I had the chance all over I would do exactly what you two are doing. Life is too short, revel in every second of it!

If anything it is a pleasure to see you enjoying the reason why sailing is addictive and everyone thinks about doing it. And seeing this joy is what it is all about, although you feel like you are smashed around and you are just at mercy of mother nature.. But that's why I personally love it, although I get frequently seasick and just envy everybody who doesn't. And it is really nice, how you are handling the lines correctly now (thumbs pointing towards you) MOST of the time (not when handling the mizzen-sheet) ;-) There also a nice trick on "how to winch" correctly, as it is just a question of correct positioning towards (or over) the winch. 🙂

On a ketch the mizzen is the best sail to balance the boat. Let it in or out to reduce weather helm - the feeling that the rudder wants to go its own way and you have to fight it to stay on course. Should only take one or two fingers when she is balanced to steer. Much easier on the autopilot too. Loved watching you guys sail. Stay safe and have fun😜

You are quite correct in saying happiness is unique to each individual. The one thing I would caution is to realize happiness lies in enjoying the journey. I believe your smiles and enjoyment we see are real happiness. Never forget that you will NEVER reach a destination of happiness. One day I hope to sail, but if that day never makes it I am OK because I am happy with my choices. And while there are quite a few channels vlogging sailing, van life, bus life, etc. there are also Lenny of people enjoying a short bit of escapism by watching the various creators. I suspect both of you are smart enough to deal with how to make ends meet.

SAME! Every time you talk to anyone these days they complain about how they are struggling to pay their bills, how they can't afford to heat the house, how much they have to work and all that jazz. Hell no I'm not living that life! My neighbours at the dock are such chill awesome people and we have a great community. While my "house" friends don't have the time or energy to do anything because they work so much. They all thought I was crazy or dumb for buying a boat, now they are all saying they wish they could live free like that. And they can, but they won't. What I have learned about people since I started my boat journey is that people are just scared. scared to be different, scared to try new things, scared of failing. We've all been diciplined to think that there is only one way to live, I guess we're the lucky one's that managed to break out of that and dare to take a chance! Love your videos :)

I drive everyday to work, get the train, get a face full of armpit sweat as the tube bounces along. I do it as it is a job I love, or is it a job that I know and have been doing it for many years. It pays the bills. The wife is happy I am never at home. My dream it to not care what day it is and buy a sailing boat. Never got round it. I have to image whilst watching your adventures. Your intro. You clearly took time to think what you were saying. Many people I am sure envy you both, but the way it was narrated caught my attention. Sailing where the wind takes you cost money. Doing voice overs is one place I suggest you look. Can be done anywhere and pays well, even while sailing the ocean. My wife doesn’t like sailing, so I have to wait until retirement. But we all know other things in life crop up and stop us doing our dreams. As a mature adult or old git, I did many thing and no once regretted them. Go with your dreams and life sorts itself out. Great stories to be had to tell the kids, grandkids or just friends. What you are doing is living many peoples dream where they didn’t take the chance. You did which is why we watch, we learn for that one glimmer of hope that we too, one day will be sailing.

It was very pleasant, watching you enjoy your boat. You'll need plenty of that, getting out and experimenting, what fun! I wonder when you will be taking your first steps over to the Channel Islands, passage planning, getting the tides right - always being able to not go, even when you've planned it for ages, because, you know, sometimes it's better to be looking out at the sea, wishing you were there, than it is looking back at the shoreline, wishing you were there. Anyway, you'll soon be a pair of salty seadogs, at one with that, rather nice, old Colvic, and the absolute best of luck and all happiness to you.

You guys are so great! I started watching from Belgium as I'm from Swansea originally and found it lovely to see you enjoy Swansea university. I started sailing in Cardiff University because of Sailing la Vagabonde and Zatara and have always dreamed of having a boat of my own someday. Maybe one day I'll do it just like you two! Good luck on the open seas. Becka you're a great story teller. The beginning gave me goosebumps. Screw the "typical" 9-5, it's so outdated xxx

Wow, that was great. Nice voice-over at the start. Basically, stuff the nay-sayers and do what makes you happy as a person/couple.......Brilliant and nobody can watch this video and say that sailing isn't making you happy 😎. I was smiling all the way through with you. Your confidence is really growing and showing every week and you've even ventured outside of the breakwater. Next goal is a trip around the Eddystone. From what I saw, once you engaged the Autopilot, the wheel hardly moved which means you had the boat balanced beautifully. In fact, because I think you two are such great people, I've joined up to your Patrion account to give you a little extra help 😀. Catch you next week 😄⛵

Sailing is the last freedom. The price you pay is to be responsible for everything, with no safety net. Knowing and understanding every part of your boat. But you'll discover the truth of freedom as you do things like sailing down the moon, almost reading by starlit on a moonless and cloudless night far from land, sunset and sunrise, the dolphins and those determined and funny little motorcycle helmet creatures heading who knows where (turtles I think they are called). Both sadness and happiness at the end of a long voyage. If ever you stop learning then that is the time to give up. One day, you'll amaze yourself with how much more you know about the planet, its life, geography and the place of Earth in the Universe. This is a perfect life if you are humble enough to learn from everything. I am grateful to be getting back to it after so long. Well done you two, you make us proud of your inspiring spirit.

Really loving the videos, takes me back 55 years when l first started. I have had two ketch rigged boats, a Moody 42 and a Nicholson 38. I agree with another post about keeping the genoa up for much longer. One of the benefits of your rig is the multiple sail options. Off the wind in a blow dump the main and keep the other two up. You can reef the genoa so easily with a winch depending on the wind strength. Going up wind the the main and genoa are the two key sails, the mizzen doesn't do much hard on the wind, and don't be afraid to reef early, as keeping upright keeps you moving faster for longer, and is always more comfortable so you two keep happier for longer! You are doing the right thing by practising in a safe place - keep up the good work and keep the videos coming.
@TeuluTribe
@TeuluTribe 2 жыл бұрын
So glad you are enjoying them Steve 😊 I bet they were wonderful boats. We did realise in hindsight that our genoa should have stayed up longer- but next time the wind picks up we shall try that 😊Thanks so much for the advice!

I worked in a very high stress, high pressure job. Had trouble sleeping (most nights 2-3 hours sleep) and headaches 24/7. 3years ago I had a mental breakdown and had to stop work. Within 7 days I was sleeping 8 hours a night and the headaches had stopped. Fortunately New Zealand has a very good support system. In September last year I turned 65 and become eligible for a pension. I now live in my caravan full-time (from choice, had other options) and just travel were and when I want. My caravan is perfectly set up for off-grid living.

I have just enjoyed some vicarious sailing watching your video. Many thanks and good wishes for your exciting worthwhile life. Comment:- The luff of your mainsail looked a bit slack for 17knts plus wind strength. you may know this already but as the wind strength increases increase the tension on the sail luff (halyard) to pull the flow forward and keep clean air comong off the leach. Looking forward to your next post.

We are glad you enjoyed it Brian! Yes, it was, we are still fiddling with the sails to get everything tensioned in the right place- we will try that next time, thanks! 😊

Good job guys! Ketches are definietly different to sail than a sloop, lots more versatility , options for sail config. First reef on a Ketch is typically to drop the main and leave the genoa and mizzen flying. Its a really easy maneover! The boat will stay balanced that way too! BTW the mainsheet is installed upside down! The block with the cam cleat should be installed at the track not the boom. Easy fix, just unshackle and flip it!
@TeuluTribe
@TeuluTribe 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Pierre, yes in hindsight, our main should have come down first! We shall try that next time 😊 doh about the mainsheet- will check that out today, thanks so much!
