With so many videos telling why you should “upgrade” to the latest and greatest cameras, I think it’s time to actually consider the opposite. In this talking head video, I share some of the reasons and thought process behind our recent “downgrade” to smaller, lighter and less expensive cameras for our upcoming travel filmmaking and photography adventures.
I sold my X-T4 for this camera: geni.us/muT2Yq (Amazon)

Good info, good stuff. I actually went the other way, I had both the X-E4 and X-S10 and finally settled on the X-T4. I also initially wanted something small and light, but their size do not eliminate a bag or strap for carrying. I figured if I'm going to have a bag, I'd rather have the X-T4. My decision point is basically "do I need a bag or is it truly pocketable" So I got the X-T4 and for truly pocketable, I picked a GR iii.

I have been using fujifilm for about 2 years now, and i absolutely love them. I have an x100t, xe2, and xt2. And between those 3 cameras i've been able to take some of the best photos ive ever taken in my life. the x100t was the first fujifilm camera i first purchased after getting rid of my canon 6d. I thought i was done doing paid work so i wanted to get rid of the big bodies, and just use my camera for hobby purposes. But as soon i switched and bought the x100t, i had someone reach out to shoot a wedding. And i shot a full 8 hour wedding, with just the x100t, and that was honestly one of the best weddings ive ever shot. Since then, i purchased the xt2 for professional work, and i picked up the xe2 for my back up camera. So new gear is not always necessary. Limitations allow me to be more creative, and for me to really think of how a compose my shots. But these "old" cameras are more than capable of doing anything i need a camera to do.

I'm thinking about buying a brand new XS-10 sometime in the near future. I don't own that 4th 26mpx sensor Yet!!! I got the X-Trans 1,2,3 sensors but wanted to see the new look without spending thousands on a X-Pro3 or X-T4. I need and want IBIS so that makes this choice very easy for me now. Thanks for the XS-10 information noted in this video. Awesome job you always do in your KZfaq workflow.

I went through a very similar transition from a full frame mirrorless system that I thought I needed a year ago (which I then sold my X-T3 and fuji lens setup), but found I missed the smaller lighter lifestyle. So when I found a X-E4 + 27mm bundle I snatched it up and started my switch back. Add a thumb grip and the X-E4 is very nice and much easier to manage even with the 18 f1.4, 33 f1.4 and 50 f2. That kit is all I really need and am happy to go out shooting with this leaner kit that still produces wonderful pictures and doesn't weigh me down.

I am new toFuji and looked at all the cameras in the line up. I been shooting for many years, developed all my negatives and enlargements. I moved on to DSLR early, added a true pocket camera the Sony RX100M4. The Sony Rx is an impressive pocket camera leads the class. I love the idea of a more nimble camera and the Medium format was what I on and specifically think to be the best at color and flexibility. Not having an existing Fuji allowed me to determine which camera was right for me. Image stabilization was a big priority as well as features and ergonomics. I was not concerned that it did not look like a Leica rangefinder or that it was not “ normal” . There is no such thing as a perfect camera so for the X S10 was the choice.I am not looking back either. The photographer has more to do with taking great pictures and with today’s post processing any of the cameras mentioned in this video response are ALL very high quality tools to use.

I just haven’t bought into the whole upgrade thing. Still rocking the Xt-2 and Xpro2. If you’ve ever noticed, some of the most talented photographers out there use old gear. They’ve realised that the equipment is just a tool and focus all their energy into taking great images. Buying gear is easy
@FredRanger
@FredRanger 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Buying and upgrading gear is the easiest thing to do and will not make you a better photographer/filmmaker. Creating great images is doable with anything that can capture light (film and digital). That’s why « downgrading », simplifying and going back to the essence are a great option to help you focus on just that.

I did lose the weather sealing, but I’m not to worried about it. The X-S10 will mainly be used in the studio or on clement conditions outside. The IBIS is superior than the one I had in the X-H1 and very similar to the one I. The X-T4. Alll in all didn’t lose any money that’s the best part.

I know this comment is two months late, but i upsized from X-T30 to X-T4 partly because old Sausage Fingers here was forever accidentally pressing the sticky-out buttons on the top and back of the X-T30 and bringing up the Q menu or changing the ISO setting without meaning to, and sometimes losing shots. So for travel purposes, I will stick with my X-T4 with a couple of f/2 primes, and my X100F. Probably comparable to my old Nikon D7000, 35mm f/1.8 and 70-300 zoom, so I reckon this package. Enjoy your travels.

Informative video, Fred. I have the XT4 and X100V from Fuji and use them daily. I do see why you switched from the XT4 because of the handgrip. I use my XT4 for macro work (not insects) indoors and I frequently press the buttons on the front of the camera when switching to vertical format on my tripod. Larger hand size needs more grip space. I love the color profiles Fuji has with their cameras and I switched to Capture One Pro from Lightroom as they produce better colors for my Fuji photos. I hope you make it to Italy; sounds like more lockdowns coming, unfortunately. Best wishes!

Hey Fred. Been a subscriber since around 500 subscribers. I purchased a Xs-10 in Dec of last year while in Japan. However I sent it back. Like you I loved the grip. But I could not stand the fact that sometimes while picking up the camera my hand would often knock the centre focus off. This was a complaint by many. But after ruining my Christmas photos with my family I sent it back as that was the final straw. Loved the ergonomics of the grip but lack of the d-pad, constantly hitting joystick and knocking focus button and same lame battery I sent it back. One thing I can’t understand is why Fuji can’t make a smaller f2.8 zoom. If Tamron can make a great 28-75f2.8 for Sony full frame then why can’t Fuji? I wanted to stay with Fuji but I decided to switch to Sony. I even just sold my X100V with a shutter count of 2500. Cheers.

Skipper, thanks for being here since 5 years ago! I really appreciate it man. I can see why you got frustrated with this camera and I would've probably done the same thing in your situation. As you know, I shoot less stills with my Fuji cameras since I added Leica cameras into my kit. It's such a different system, but it allows me to stop wanting to "upgrade" to newer/"better" cameras. So this X-S10 was a way for me to still use some Fujifilm lenses I've got (I've sold a bunch) without having to look at a $2300 CAD camera sitting in my kit. It does fit my needs for now in terms of a studio camera for KZfaq and light vlogging, but I'll soon find out if it's capable of doing the same on the road. As for the X100V, mine is also for Sale with a very low shutter count as I can't justify have it AND the Leica Q2. All in all, I think more and more people are considering "downgrading" these days to simplify their shooting experience and I'm certainly one of them after spending years (and a lot of money hehe) upgrading. Happy shooting man and thanks again for being an OG sub here!

I had an X-T2 and an X-E2 combination for a while, but switched to the X-Pro2 and X-E3 for my “travel kit”, mainly because I prefer the “rangefinder style” and I liked having the same sensor for both cameras for continuity. As I live in the Pacific Northwest where we tend to have frequent wet weather, the X-Pro2 is the safer bet for most outings, but I actually like the X-E3 better for my fair weather days due to its lighter weight, and I don’t always have people stopping me to as if my camera is a Leica like they do with the X-Pro! 😜 If an X-E5 should come out with some sort of weather sealing, I’d likely consolidate my kit to a single camera!

Thoroughly enjoyed your video Fred. Bought a XT-3 a couple of years ago & in my opinion, it's a remarkable camera compared to my earliercameras. As a retired senior, I spent most of my Covid downtime learning the Fuji system & watching many XT-3 videos. Initially it was a steep learning curve for me, but once I got the hang of it , it is a great camera to use. But, I wasn't 100% comfortable using it & it would do things that I'll never use. I did use a lot of the new features though. Managed to get an XE-4 after weeks of hunting & I am really enjoying it. Added a JJC grip.It's fun again. I grab it with my 18-55 even when I'm going out to run errands. Never did that with my XT-3. Booked another European riverboat cruise 2 years ago & am looking forward to it in 2022. I'll be taking the XE-4. May(or may not) sell the X-T3 or trade for the S-10. That way , wife and I will each have a travel camera as we tends to go on different tours on our vacation.

This video presents an interesting perspective on preferring the X-S10 and X-E4 over the X-T4 and X-T3. Still, I used to regularly carry around an X-T2 and recently got an X-T4 after resisting upgrading for a while. I'm very happy with the X-T4 and find it just as easy to carry around. I also value the easy access to all the important control dials. I might eventually consider one of the cameras Fred has shown here as a second camera when I do concert shots since I do them with prime lenses and that would reduce lens changes. I actually looked at the XS-10 because of its price. But, my final decision was based on a few things. First, I got a basically new X-T3, 18-55mm lens, Fuji grip(not battery), extra batteries, extra charger for about the same price as the XS-10. Secondly, the XS-10 only has one card slot and isn't weather protected. Finally, because the last real camera I used was a film camera in the 80s I really liked the top dials for ISO and SS on the X-T3. Weight isn't a big issue for me either. And, I didn't plan to shoot any video with the camera. Best of luck with your new cameras and have fun traveling! Rock On!

I am looking for a lightweight camera that has great picture quality, good in low light, easy to use and great for wildlife photography including birds in flight. I don't want something where I need a tripod. Which of the Fuji cameras would you recommend or is there another brand/make that would be best for this. Would either of the cameras you mentioned be good for my needs? I am going from my iphone 12 mini. Although I can make some pretty pics with editing, I am lacking in zoom capability and low light shooting is poor. I had also considered the A6600 but not sure if the menu would be too complicated as some have said.

I've owned a X-E3 for a few years and love it. Great camera with exceptional image quality. I decided to "upgrade" to an X-T3 (black version) because of the tilt screen and weather sealing which I really need for my type of photography. When I received the X-T3 I was surprised of the build quality, it seems inferior to the X-E3. The X-T3 feels very plasticky compared with the X-E3, especially the dials, not sure if it is because I chose the black version. Does anyone have experience with both black and silver versions of the X-T3 that can comment on build quality?
@FredRanger
@FredRanger 2 жыл бұрын
I agree that the metal top and bottom plates of the X-E3 and 4 give it a more stealthy feeling than the X-T4 that seem to have more plastic.

Interesting, I too own the X-E3 (my first Fuji camera) having migrated from Canon for a more tactile experience. I have also just recently purchased a X-T3 for pretty much the same reasons as you, both are the black models. I can’t say I really find either one inferior build quality wise, I think they’re both pretty solid, but if I had to nit pick: The joystick on the X-E3 could’ve been better IMO and I find the rear dial on the X-T3 could’ve been a little smoother like the X-E3, maybe it’s just my version but that’s my two penny worth. I enjoy both cameras and I don’t see me changing or selling either one, although I wouldn’t say no to a X-Pro2 if the right one came along 🤔

@@karimnasser9226 I think that's a rumor, especially when you think, the silver ones are black underneath, anyway. I can't speak for the X-E3/T3, but the silver X-E1 is black paint underneath, seen some examples, but decided not to buy. I am fine with my black E1/E2 & T1. But one thing for sure - the silver X-T1 (graphite into fujifilm term) doesn't hold up the color as good, as the black ones. I bought a graphite T1 some years ago, and it has minor color (almost with loupe) paint off at the faux pentaprism hump. I never see something from the black version of the X-T1. And i've met Photographers with the graphite X-T3, they've the same, subtle usage traces at the same edges, like my X-T1...where the color paint is way subtle off. The black version holds its paint much better than the graphite edition.

Hi. Thanks for the nice video, very informative especially if you are yourself in a quite complicated decision process lol ;))). I actually own a X-T3 which I'm extremely happy with, the picture quality, the built, the weather sealing (combined with a WR lens). But now I'd like to buy myself a second Fuji Camera to go with some prime lenses I am about to buy (3rd party lenses to start with), and now I can't decide between another X-T3, the X-S10 or the very recent X-T30 II? Price shall not be a decision factor. Any suggestions? :)
@FredRanger

Thanks for the feedback :) Depending on what you are looking for, the only that has IBIS and flip out screen in the options you mentioned is the X-S10. Might come in handy for low light handheld shots and video (if you do any). Also the grip on the X-10 is the most comfortable one. The X-T30 offers a closer shooting experience to your X-T3 with the dials on top. Both systems are great options and it all comes down which shooting experience you prefer. I would rent or try both at you camera store and decide from there. Cheers!

@@FredRanger Thanks for your feedback. On top of that, the fact these 3 cameras are more or less in the same price range doesn't help choosing at all ;)) This reminds me when I spent countless nights thinking whether I should buy the XT4 (IBIS) or XT3 (no IBIS), and I went for the XT3 because I shoot mainly pics and very little video. If indeed the IBIS will again not be the decisive factor why buy the XT30ii if for a little more one can get the XT3? The point is, does it make sense to have 2 XT3s or should one go for 2 different cameras?

Thank you, this was super useful video, especially considering how relatively short it is. I am just now looking into jumping into the Fuji system. Too bulky definitely prevents one from taking the camera along. While too small can compromise ergonomics, for those of us with larger hands. I almost ordered the X-Pro3, but someone pointed out that it’s not the best way to learn the Fuji menus, due to the closed screen. The large grip on S10 is very appealing, I see people really enjoy the ergonomics it brings.

My film sim dial has a chip and the bottom plate has marks from a quick release plate. The buttons feel cheap, the flash is very flimsy, and the screen is creaky. For me weather sealing is not bullet proof, and I prefer Image Stabilization all day. IBIS is more useful for low light, longer exposures, higher f stops and camera shake. With a simple plastic bag shroud you cam overcome rain events which you should use in either camera.
@Festvangelist
@Festvangelist 2 жыл бұрын
Weather sealing over IBIS…really? I have always carried a plastic shroud just in case of wet weather because even weather sealing is not waterproof. There is no substitute for IBIS if your lens does not have it. I would not trade in a camera to get a different camera either just not a value strategy. I have taken some impressive hand held photos because of IBIS.

I've dded the 100-400mm for wildlife then the 70-300mm came out. I bought a 1.4x teleconverter. I am having a hard time justifying keeping the 100-400mm. It is a beautiful lens but very big and heavy. Considering selling it, keeping the 70-300mm and 1.4tc, selling the 55-200 and keeping the 18-55mm.
