Today we look at all the uses for that little 'chrono' button in front of you when flying the Airbus! What do we use it for and what does it do will be explained.

I am a real world Airbus pilot with thousands of hours flying the real aircraft and thought it would be fun to have a look at the new detailed simulation of the longest baby 'bus by Toliss as well as the new MSFS a320 NEO. Hopefully you find this useful and it brings another perspective to your simulation. Any thoughts or comments are welcome!

Always interesting hearing the slight variations to SOPs you guys use. Different strokes for different folks. We just use 1 min warm up time for APU thermal stabilisation. Then we wait a minute before a pack goes on after the Bleed. 3 min engine warm up time / cool down time is now uniform across the fleet. CEO & NEO airframes. No IAE engines to worry about. 😉 I never bother timing the engine start. As you say it’s personal preference. It’s quite obvious if you get a hot start or hung start and ECAM tells you quickly enough. And if they think finding the QRH procedure for a tail pipe fire is “timely” enough instead of it being a memory item, it’s good enough for me. Obviously we’d time it on a manual start as you say. 👍 So many ways to skin a cat at the end of the day.

Thank you so much for this very informative video. I've been a jet aviation fan all of my life, and have watched countless in-the-cockpit videos, and one of the things I could never figure out is why the chrono button is pushed at takeoff. Actually, until I watched this video, I never noticed it being pushed at any other time. Thanks for this great video. I am a new subscriber.

Very interesting explanations, as always! Glad to learn so much on how the 320 is used on daily basis. It brings a lot of color and of sense to the simulation! If I may request, could you explain sometime how to fly the standby part of the approaches (where we are supposed to fly in circles waiting for ATC authorization to carry on)? How to do it manually? How to update the MCDU accordingly ? How to resume the approach afterwards? ..

It's interesting that in Europe you start eng 2 first and in the US you start with eng 1. I think it's because in the US single-engine taxi is more common and if you have eng 2 running the PTU will be barking whereas if you have eng 1 running you can turn the electric pump on and it's quiet.

Excellent guide, same with your entire tutorial list. I recently started flying the Toliss A321 and coming from the Zibo 737 I feel like a little kid inside the Airbus. Everything is so straightforward and well thought, the automation always puts a smile on my face, probably timing is the most manual thing in this bird 😄. Regarding this I have a question, do you time anything after landing? For example, engine cooldown time after thrust reversers are closed? I know that some company SOPs for the 737 will require this but I'm not sure if it's happening on the Buses too. Thanks for all these great tutorials. Your list got me up and running in no time.

Another question - unrelated to this video but you reminded me when you switched to TA/RA on the TCAS... so what modes are set in the TCAS and when? I know TA/RA when we get permission for takeoff and travel on runways but do you switch TA upon pushback and taxi, or another mode separately for pushback and then taxi? You may wish to do a video on the TCAS... if not done already.
@bigbearone2023
@bigbearone2023 2 жыл бұрын
TA/RA is mode Charlie. In Flight Sims it'll be better if you keep your Transponder to Mode Charlie or TCAS to TA/RA
@leximoding
@leximoding 2 жыл бұрын
ATC in the US will usually require mode C (TA) while taxiing, while some European countries will only require mode S (XPDR on, TCAS stby) until takeoff. The TCAS switch on TA/RA will run only on TA while on/close to the ground so setting it on TA or TA/RA while on the ground will do the same.

Great video, thanks. My VA penalises engine shutdown if the engines have not been allowed to thermally stabilise - which seems to be a couple of minutes too. Do you do similar chrono timing IRL here (thinking if you have a shortish taxi to gate or you are doing a one engine taxi home)

Prevents the igniters from activating. It allows you to motor the engine either for maintenance or incase of a failed start where you need to expel any leftover fuel/fumes so it can’t be ignited accidentally

Interesting. Someone told me that their airline only pays them based on chronometer time flew. Thought that was sorta unfair since pilots are spending hours planning, programming, walk arounds, etc. Guess it is based on airline. When I sim fly my chronometer starts at pushback and ends at parked. :)

That F-14 pilot probably thought it would be funny to park at a gate like that. Wait till he finds out the airport doesn't have the proper Tow Bar to push him back from the gate. 😎🙄 BTW, yes an F-14 or any military aircraft can land at a commercial airport (and do), but they will park in General Parking or Ramp.

I find it a bit strange that Airbus have not integrated automatic timers for things like idle engines after startup, takeoff trust time etc. if it’s a requirement, the systems should deal with this automatically.
