Why Were 4 Players Drafted Before Elias Pettersson? Where Are They Now?

The 2017 NHL draft was a very interesting draft. Analysts had zero idea how to predict this draft, and the biggest shock was Elias Pettersson who has quickly become a superstar in the league. With the other names in Makar, Heiskanen, Patrick, and Hischier , let see how their careers have compared.

Correction: Elias started playing in his hometown, Ånge, not Sundsvall or timrå. He and his brother both started up there, they played for Ånges team until they grew of-age to play with the juniors in the bigger city (Sundsvall/Timrå). But they kept living at home and developing in Ånge also. They both spent tons of their younger years practicing their talent in their hometown Ånge.

Great video! Congratulations on over 100,000 view count! As a third generation Vancouver resident i have been waiting for Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes my whole life. As Local reporter "Drancer" has said recently only 2 other teams in the last generation have had back to back top draft picks. The first is Pittsburgh with Crosby and Malkin and the other is the backhawks drafting Kane and Towes. The difference is that both those teams drafted top forwards back to back but what sets Vancouver apart is that no team has ever drafted a #1 center and a #1 Dman back to back except the Vancouver Canucks! Enjoy the next 10 years Canucks fans, i know i will!

Even though Pettersson was thin he was strong and handle the puck blindly and had a suprising good shot, superb technique and his effortless skating was already insane back then. Im glad that the Canucks fans can go watch hockey and magic at the same time. But i do hope that he will end his career where it started it Timrå IK ( dont say he's from Sundsvall ) Timrå is a small town 25 km north of Sundsvall and WE TIK FANS hate that. Pettersson had a pretty poor U20 tournament while Hischier was very dominant. I'm from Sweden and I remember being very disappointed, because he was our main non-drafted prospect. Heiskanen were super hyped, and the scouts must have seen Makar's potential. It's not like they were wrong about Makar. I think Pettersson caught most of us off guard in terms of how much he would improve. Nolan Patrick was a huge wild card. I was always sceptical towards him. He hadn't really proven much, but he was selected early because he was supposed to be the 1st pick. I'm sceptical to Makar being picked before too, but Colorado must have had a good read. Picking Hischier and Heiskanen before Pettersson made perfect sense though, at the time, and they were not bad picks either, and certainly safer picks.

For today's (and future) NHL I would've picked Heiskanen and Makar over Pettersson as the defence competency is becoming more and more important asset. Maple Leafs is good example of uselessness of forwards when D isn't competent enough. On the other hand STL blues isn't as offensive as Leafs, Oilers or Vancouver, but they dominate playoffs. Offence dominates regular season. Defence does that in playoffs.

Well, this is the eternal question - what do you draft for? Do you draft for the best player available or for the best player available for the needs your team has (center vs. winger vs. defender vs. goalie)? The Avs and the Stars obviously needed defense - and both ended up with generational defenders - a friend of mine was a coach of Heiskanen and his former coach is not surprised at all about his on-ice development. Hischier was just unlucky that he ended up with the worst managed team in the last few seasons - where to start with??? Patrick also had his share of bad luck and we all hope he will be fine in the end and that he has a sincere chance to show what's in him! Good luck Nolan!
@ulrichsuter3548
@ulrichsuter3548 4 жыл бұрын
@@Imtotallydiggingthis - you are correct. Nevertheless, I would like to see a defender being picked first! It would take a lot of guts from an organization or a clear superiority for a defender to be picked #1. Out of the last 20 drafts - 15 #1 were forwards, 3 defenders and two goalies. Ice hockey is about people, their skills, their talents and most of all character. You draft for character and attitude and you practice for skills. But since it is about people - it is always about soft factors. This means it is kind of a lottery - while a lottery you can do a lot of research about in advance. And still you can't take out the factors which are out of your control (injuries etc.(one bad hit and your #1 pick goes down the toilet)).
@ulrichsuter3548
@ulrichsuter3548 4 жыл бұрын
@@Imtotallydiggingthis Good point about defenders developing later... The draft is one thing - what an organization makes out of it is a whole different story! I have several friends who used to play in the NHL - even with some rings and so. And all tell me that it is always discipline over talent. There is no chance you are going anywhere without the highest level of discipline. You might get in there - but you won't last. Daigle is an unfortunate case of "being told he is the greatest" - so he started to believe the gospel and stopped working hard and developing. The tricks which work in lower leagues might not work against a 6.3 foot, 220 pound defender... on top, the goalies are so much better in NHL levels. Modern hockey has, unfortunately, become a bit boring - too much system and very little room for creativity. Many coaches are overcoaching their teams because they need success. Because if they don't have success, they won't keep a job for long. And this is why they all try to keep the puck out of the goal - which is much easier than to put it into the goal. Professional teams have analysts for everything - the player has become a glass athlete. The doctors can tell you within days if you cheat with your diet or if you are behind with your work out regime. They can measure and analyze anything - except they cannot analyze creativity. And you can't simulate creativity (how will you perform under pressure). So coaches and managers go with the obvious - data and points. Because they can hide behind data and say (in case a #1 pick busts) - "I did all the research and we had to go with that player". Heiskanen has a great character for coaches - he obviously goes on the ice each practice with a plan and the attitude "today I become a better player". Hischier, on the other hand, is a perfect case of how a frightened coach can literally coach talent out of a super creative center just to make him an (unnatural) two-way center. The Daigle and Hischier examples are two very good examples of how important your environment is. How do your parents, your manager and your teammates support you when you make it into the league and end up with a bad coach who tells you to play outside your comfort zone. As a 19-year-old, you are very quickly impressed and give up on what you believe in because you 7 analysts telling you every inch you skated or didn't skate. Mentoring is just as important for a young player. If you talk to a retired player, they will many times tell you that they had that one older teammate who helped them with the things besides the puck... Good teams are the perfect blend of several good players - other teams just have individual stars who won't win a flower pot. Even Mc David could end up without a cup. Which shifts the focus away from the player draft to management which decides over player development, scouting, coaching, support systems etc.
