Seeing that the Old Gods used to be the most powerful beings in the entire universe. Just a mention of them would cause most mortals to tremble. The storyline with Ulduar in WotLK was one of the most iconic in all of warcraft history with us doing everything to stop Yogg-Saron from getting free. The Halls of Ulduar really felt like they housed an evil that we could never even hope to defeat and the best we could do is to just contain him.
However with Chronicle and the recent Old God changes they really lost their significance. I would say the final nail in their coffin was in Battle for Azeroth and the Ny'lotha raid finale where we just defeated N'zoth like he really was nothing. Our biggest fear of an Old God getting freed was materialized yet we just defeated him. This shift in the lore in the past 10-15 years really made a lot of people wonder why were the Old Gods defeated so easily?

Doronsmovies the old gods could easily be bested by a titan. It was just in doing so endangered the planet and maybe the Titan inside. Pretty sure reasons why would surround the thought of then not being fully manifested, seemingly not exactly in “our physical realm”. Not able to achieve their fully rested state. Maybe even having their influence spread and corrupting things helps them obtain power. With the land and everything around being healed mostly that could contribute to their “nerfed” state. Haha

Nyalotha definitely needed to be an expansion or something bigger than what we got. I think the budget and personnel cuts are more to blame for what happened with BFA and not laziness, because the development team busts their asses working, they just don't have the manpower or resources.

Totally agree. I feel like the whole expansion was just to get all the remaining lore out of the way in a single expansion so that we could move to new stuff. Kul tiras, zandalar, nazjatar, and old gods in a single expansion was quite a lot.

Indeed it was , they are rushing content out , not carrying about quality but about quantity . They clearly imposed upon themselves that a new expansion has to come out every 2 years so that they can sell new expansions passes , and have new models for cash shop mounts and pets. They don't care about lore anymore that is clear. You can see the influence of Tencent .

@@gerihuginn2143 it's not really Tencent, they have like 5% stake in Acti blizz. Its literally just what every publisher is doing now, push crap out so they can sell passes and micro transactions. So this is Activision Blizzards influence and their wonderful CEO who happily lays off 800 people then takes a 30 million dollar bonus.

Ammmm there are far more powerful bosses than Arthas the reason he killed the raid couz Ashbringer was there to ress us. Blizz are not going to do that again lol it will be dump if we get killed and Vellen resing us 24/7 ...... I have no idea how "Arthas killed the raid" is argument at all.

You guys need to realize that, in the Expansion prior, we jailed Sargeras, slapped the Legion at Antorus, and fought a fucking Sargeras empowered World Soul that could decimate ALL of creation in a single spell.

What happened to "You can never truly kill an old god"? I believe that C'Thun, Yogg'Saron and N'Zoth are all still alive and kicking. And even if they are dead in game, at least to me they'll forever be there in the shadows just out of sight and scheming.

@@iesdise more like with the power of friendship and love and the believing in the good with some memories of the childhood give you enough power to stand up from 265 knife stab and getting pushed trough 9 house. Then you will be able to destroy the enemy with ONE PUUUUNCH. Now it was a laser beam but yeah... For me it was like this.

I still have some old books that feature snippets of the "old" lore in them, and I will guard them with my life. Like seriously, being invested in the lore since WC3 has left me in a position where I could hold an hour long lore presentation from the top of my head, yet most of that lore is now revamped/re-written/non-canonical or otherwise sullied.

The old gods used to be these monumental threats that could beat the Titans themselves. After chronicle they just nerfed them and killed the threat and wonder that blizzard had built up. Blizzard is Blizzard's worst enemy.

Yeah bro the Old God lore was basically my favorite in the entire universe since it was very creepy and mysterius, uncovering just small lines or clues about their whereabouts and their powers where such big deals I just craved more! And now with them being only secondary threats I’ve actually lost interest in most of the WoW lore, except for some of the new stuff in Shadowlands

It's just bad writing. There are really no excuses... nazjatar/azshara deserved a full expansion and the same thing could be said about n'zoth and the black empire. The whole story was rushed af. If only their whole team was as good as the art team... At least the awesome art of nazjatar and ny'alotha will be remembered by the community :(

juanfrainsane I agree, BFA should have been azshara’s expansion to set up a black empire expansion. That would have also been enough time to organically develop sylvanas’ master plan throughout the story. And the faction war was really unnecessary.

While C'Thun's defeat itself might have been a bit underwhelming from a lore-point of view, he did cause quite a bit of havoc with the War of the Shifting Sands and later on with the opening of the gates of Ahn'Qiraj, so in that sense it was a bit more than a simple expedition. And wasn't C'Thun supposed to still be at least technically sleeping when he was defeated? Maybe he just preferred manipulating insects over the other fleshy races lol

The fact that Blizzard created for themselves this stupid deadliner for putting out content. They cancel content that the players would enjoy or rush it because they just want to make a fast buck . They are using the quantity over quality aproach , you can see the hand of Tencent in the way BlizzardActivion works. There is no need for an expansion every 2 years if the content you put out in the current expansion is properly made , not filled with gaps and bugs . They could've done so much more with Nzoth breaking out , they could've done an entire expansion about himself, but no let's rush trought the last drops that WoW has to offer. Are they even aware that we literally went through all of the old lore and now they have to make up new lore. Let's see if Shadowlands will be set up well or not , but taking into consideration their approach I'm willing to bet that the entire setting will not make sense and even the content will be lackluster because they will rush the content so that they can push more mounts in the cash shop.

I'm willing to bet they've rushed the remaining old threats out the door so that they can stop thinking about previously established lore and, hopefully, start getting creative about new potential threats to stab for loot. Also, they've said Shadowlands is an infinite realm - might be their plan to just send us to other worlds within this realm for other expansions(maybe not all the time though... But then, how many new hidden continents can Azeroth hold?). They could even keep Torghast as a system for it if it proved popular enough, since it's still in the Shadowlands, and the Maw is a place that likely isn't going anywhere.

To be quite fair, what we did with N'Zoth is use a tool that was created by the Titans to restore the world to 'default settings' in case any of the Big Bads ever won. But we used it in Ny'alotha, essentially using it as a scalpel to carve N'Zoth out from existence. The Black Empire Campaign was just a prep for that. The entire Ny'alotha raid was a prep to use that tool. Y'Shaarj was already defeated long ago, so we didn't actually get to fight C'thun and Yogg-Saron yet, and with N'Zoth being the weakest Old God, who knows what we might encounter down the line. My only gripe is the 30 second LotR style cinematic. If they had just done the cinematic differently, it would've been perfect.

Just you wait, we "defeated" N'Zoth, what if he made us see this as a vision, meaning yea we defeated him in our minds but in the real world he is still roaming free ?

I think N'Zoth was dealt with easily to give a false sense of victory. Alleria mentions that the whispers have increased since N'Zoth's defeat, that more voices have joined the chorus. I believe N'Zoth intended to be "defeated," that way he could be resurrected by a faithful follower or minion and operate more in the shadows again. If everyone thinks he's dead, he can start manipulating things from behind the scenes and it will be less obvious it's the work of an Old God since they are all "dead." And I think it's very likely that the expansion after Shadowlands is a true Black Empire one because they can have a significant time skip while we are in the Shadowlands. Time seems to flow differently in the Shadowlands similar to how it does in the Twisting Nether. So I feel when we come back from doing what we have to within the Shadowlands we'll have skipped about 5-10 years or so. This is personally what I think, and I hope it's not that they just rushed it.

They are, but they might come back later, but not because it was part of blizzards plan, but they just retcon everything nowadays, so if it fits the story then the old gods will be back.

It is true that N'zoth is dead but a small fracture of his essence resides in Xal'atath (the video in Ny'alotha before the 2nd last boss). So it might be possible that N'zoth finds a way to "rescurrect" himself. Little fact about the Emerald Nightmare: Yogg-Saron was the creator of it. The worldtree Andrassil (grizzlyhills) pierced his prison and gave him a connection to the Emerald Dream. N'zoth has been responsible for the formidable growth of the Emerald Nightmare.

I was quite under the impression that Yogg Saron and C'thun weren't truly defeated yet. Though, with the new thing that MOTHER put together, we should go back and truly excise them from Azeroth.

I didn't really like the old gods, I just think they looked cool and what they said always had people talking. Honestly since the inception the old gods despite their namesake were middle men. They succeeded in turning titan made races into something the void can influence. The old gods just aren't necessary now that races have learned to "control" the void. Just like the mortal races the old gods were a tool. They fought amongst each other and weakened each other. However if you can infiltrate the mind of a mortal directly.. one must consider all possibilities. Small edit, but yog'saron was great. Y'saarj voice actor was amazing.

I agree with mostly in regards to N'Zoth, though in defense of that win we did have the Heart of Azeroth herself to blast him with (overall though you are right in that he was too easily defeated) C'Thun and Yog were both still imprisoned and obviously could not bring their full strength to bear with the avatars we fought against and so we more easily dealt with then they otherwise could have been.

Tbh I quit caring for WoW-lore after this expansion. They rush the storylines so much as they seems to not care about it at all... They don't even finish the stories, I mean.. C'mon! And I personly don't like idea of The Shadowlands, seems like just another bad excuse for an expansion to reuse old characters to make fanbase "happy". The whole story is just wierd... Still I like to listen to your lore storytelling Doron, so keep up the good work!

I think these guys should be the bad guys after the defeat of Sargeras. Well, we first need to focus on the recovery of Azeroth, but now that the Burning Legion is gone, the Old Gods can take its place as the main bad guys.

I feel that N'zoth let us think we defeated him by only letting us destroy a piece of him, with the rest of him lurking in the sea west of Kalimdor and plotting to release his bigger brothers. Remember, you cannot kill an Old God that's firmly rooted in Azeroth without mortally damaging her. Look at Y'shaarj, he was ripped out of Azeroth and made the Well of Eternity. I think Yogg'saron and C'thun are sleeping or comatose currently, after the damages the heroes did to them, and are now waiting for the best opportunity to strike. The most beneficial opportunity would be when all the important people go off-world in Shadowlands to beat the Jailer and Sylvanas, so we just gave them Azeroth on a silver platter.

Nothing is dead for good in wow. Acording to lore Old Gods cannont be defeated, that was the reason titans and guardians haven't killed them and only imprisoned them to hold them there for as long as possible in order to give time for Azeroth to mature into new powerful titan. We didn't kill Yogg'Saron , we just've imprisoned him. It will take some time for him to recover but he will return one day .

What i never undestood is that the titans said that the old Gods cant be killed, beacuse that will destroy Azeroth, but when we start taking them out one by one, there seems to be no problem there... unless we actually didnt kill them....?

i would like just to correct you with "even titans could not defeat them", its not really they couldnt defeat old gods, they actual can and with ease as is written in warcraft chronicle books however by doing that they also killing the soul of azeroth itself and thats why they decided to rather imprison them then risking to kill azeroth along with them.

he was referencing older lore when he said that. Chronicle massively changed the Old Gods’ power levels, though it technically started with MoP when the Titans killed Y’shaarj, revealing that Titans could kill them, but it was much worse than imprisoning them.

I agree that the Old Gods content was rushed, and watered down, in relation to how it was built up in previous lore. That said, i dont believe the players ever confronted an Old God, at full strength. Also, Blizz has been lazy at finding new challenges/enemies for future content, without trivializing past "indomitable foes"...

It's very clear that they grew lazy and had some budget cuts. They have built up the Old Gods for years. Them having their fingers on most of the bad things that has happened on Azeroth. All of this buildup and then just like that, it was cut short. The end of BFA could have been an awesome opener to an Old God expansion. Making the Old Gods a very big deal. But it was like watching the last season of the Game of Thrones. We got a rushed, dull ending with character archs being cut short. The Old Gods deserved their own expansions... along with Argus in Legion. To give the story more depth and players more content. But this is not the first time we have seen an expansion get cut short. Look at Warlords, they introduced literally only half of the content that they normally do. They were talking about adding Farahlon, which was where the Eye of the Storm was in Outland. Then they were in the works of adding an island southeast of the Spires of Arak. Even talked about adding another continent that had a big Ogre kingdom there. They cut the Shattrath City raid and they decided to cut the Temple of Karabor and Bladespire Citadel as capital cities for each faction. The potential was there to make an amazing expac and they failed to capitalize on it. You would have thought that they would have learned to bring more depth to each expansion. But here we are again, BFA was dull from start to finish. Hopefully down the road, they plan to revisit some of this stuff. Or at least learn from their previous shortcomings.

It was thanks to the new lore that I managed to understand better the lore of Warcraft (just the Odyn and the curse of flesh parts that were really confusing to me in the start), so it's kinda hard to me to blame the retcom for "nerfing" the old gods. But I can't say that they aren't a threat because of that. They might not be the TRUE bad guys from the Void, but they ARE a threat to creatures like us. And Blizzard didn't gave us that because of the new direction they are taking now, both in storytelling management and company decisions.

The other 2 Old Gods were "easily" defeated because they were imprisoned and in a weakened state (C'Thun and Yogg Saron). The one whom we have no explanation, and justification, to is N'Zoth. Although the weakest of the Old Gods, he's still an Old freaking God at full power, with all the might of the Black Empire reborn and fought in his own created city of nightmare. No super-cool weapon (xal'athat and the heart of azeroth) nor Wrathion and Magni can explain its easy defeat. Also, this should have caused major issues to Azeroth herself, as repeatedly stated throughout the Warcraft lore (tearing an Old God from his seat causes Azeroth to suffer). The only explanation is... Bfa being bad. And rushed. And lackluster. Blizz just wanted to be done with all the old elements of lore and get on with some new stuff. That's all I can think of. Ps I agree that C'Thun too was a bit too hasty, but it can be forgiven by thinking that it was Vanilla, after all. They hand no background and way less capabilities, back then.

have to also say, that thanks to wrathion and the dagger, we where able to get close enough to fight him, had he not stabbed him, we would not have been able to get to him at all, but then again considering the hole thing is called visons of N´zoth, I would not be to supriced if the lore soon tells us, N´zoth never died, but he is now in the dagger.

@@Weffi76 As was said in the game, the Void deals in infinite possibilities. His "invasion", for all we know, could have been a ruse to make what we supposedly did in Ny'alotha more believable - but who's to say N'zoth didn't just show us what we wanted to see? For all we know, Ny'alotha isn't just one vision, and N'zoth simply showed us one of many potential outcomes - effectively faking his own death, allowing him to lay low and worm his influence into the deepest recesses of Azeroth, his power now no longer bound by a prison, thus with far more reach than before.

@@MetaL556 also, N´zoth is not realy a fighter him self eighter, so exposing him self would be realy a bad move from him, considering he pretty much invited us to him, this is why I think the dagger is way more important than just stabbing him whit it as wrathion did, and why think N´zoth is connected to it also, N´zoth used his influence to gain an army also, thanks to his whispers driving people mad and joining him, this is where his real power is, and I am sure he and xalathat are working with eachother also, to some extent, considering she could have taken the dagger and N´zoth would no in anyways been able to stop her from doing it, but she let him have it, becuse she knew what was about to happen already. Eighter N´zoth is hiding on Azeroth still, or he is in the dagger on his way to the shadowlands now.

So yes and no. I dont' disagree that N'zoth should have had more around him in bfa or in a follow-up xpac, the plotline in general probably could have been better orchestrated. But we have been fighting N'zoth for years. He was behind deathwing, we was behind the nightmare(Yogg-Saron created the nightmare but N'zoth did all the work there after). He was absolutely the most destructive old god but yes I would have liked to see him freed and I think deserved more than a patch that was de-synced with the rest of of an xpacs story. Every other old god was fine the way they were imo as they were never fully unbound so far as I know. Except for G'huun, but he was a titan experiment and within the facility... idk I don't think he needed to be stronger.

The reason why N'zoth died so easily is because we used a weapon capable of resetting an entire world. So it would make sense why he was killed easily. There's nothing to be mad about

Because it used to take multiple Titans to defeat an Old God, then the lore was retconned to make the power scaling absolutely ridiculous, with Titans being able to destroy planets with a swing. The most powerful beings were (kind of) palpable, which they aren't now, not at all.

We could also have another expansion after the shadowlands with the shade of the dead old gods coming back, with even more ability to corrupt azeroth, as a dead god is a paradox in itself. We could try to save Azeroth by clensing her as a final raid boss.

Look at the extra fine detail they put into end of faction war. Compare that to the ending of BFA. The ending of BFA wasn't even encrypted and has much lower fidelity assets used. Nyalotha ending could have been made by one person doing mschjnima...

N’Zoths defeat was underwhelming because he aint dead it was a vission his whispers already told us he knew sylvanas’s plans. This is what I think he used the empty dagger as a falactyr like kel thuzad did. Look at the cinematic the dagger disapeared after wrathion stabbed him. So whe think he is dead we went to the shaddowlands together with the leaders and now daddy N’Zoth has free range to corrupt azeroth.

I'm not defending N'Zoth's weakness in the latest expansion, or that he was portrayed weaker than he should have been. But we did channel the power of the greatest titan to ever be directly into his face. I also think the threat he poses is more of a manipulator and corrupter, not a giant death ray to the face threat.

I would say WOW lore in general has an issue with vilains. Arthas was by many peoples opinion the best wow vilain because he had character clear motivations and most of all people sympathy. Most wow villains dont have those: Old gods(because we are dark and scary boo) Na'Ru (ThE PRophEcy MuSt Be fUlfiEld) Sargeras was great because what he believes,which is all things to burn,to be better than to be surrendered and corrupted by the void. You dont have to agree with him but you can understand and sympathise what he is trying to do,to save universe in a way he believes is right. It would be interesting if Blizzard explored some ideas like one old god beeing born out of darkness and only purpose beeing corrupting world souls for their masters and than one old god is like: nah im gonna build an empire for myself and destroy anyone who opposes me including voidlords who created me. They could potencially create characters that were designed to be one-dimensional,blunt instruments of their masters to be their own characters with different motivations and goals.

Honestly, it just seems like blizzard needs to crunch and churn out media. If the old gods were cool that's one thing. If they need to shit out another brick of... 'Here's the plot go subscribe and fight it.' That's another. At this point the end goal of the warcraft project has no ending except when the money runs dry, so the story will run as thin as the subscribers wallets.

I like the way the story's going always thought the old gods were powerful but chaotic power. Like a wild animal a bear it can do a lot of damage to its surrounding area in a blind rage. But if you have something like a human we may not be as powerful in the body but the mind that more dangerous more Sidious lol. I think the void Lords are smarter not necessarily more powerful but could be completely wrong which is fine love wow.
