There was no such things like "officer's uniform" it was either modified enlisted men's uniform, or custom tailored. There is some weird missconception that SS offciers wore black uniforms... which is bullshit... or that Hugo Boss designed them which... is bullshit. Waffen SS uniforms were, from the begging of the war, made poorly, as they were sewn in concentration camps and party factories, which used slave labour. In 1944 Germany began production of uniforms which only had 20% wool... PS. Look at finnish, hungarian, polish officers, this is the shit.

I did axis re-enacting when I was younger. There were a lot of nazi apologists and closeted neo-nazis in the group which is why I ended up leaving. I don't think axis groups should be turned down or blacklisted from attending events but some people don't know how to keep politics out of the hobby.

I would have been into the axis German re enactments but I know as a women because of historical accuracy would be stuck playing some damn as officer’s stay at home house wife. Regarding National Socialism I reccomend in particular the volumes published under Time-Warner licence between the late 80s and early 90s, belonging to the series "The Third Reich"; notably the books written by George H. Stein, Charles Von Luttichau and Williamson Murray. About Theosophy and Ariosophy societies it's still possible to find some info in the Internet jungle but I suggest to avoid Wikipedia altogether. Finally it's possible to find on the internet good quality photos with reference about the utilization of the Swastika by Ancient Indoeuropean populations: just search pictures for "Hittites Swastika Standard", Greek pottery Swastika" and "Piazza Armerina mosaics" just to mention a few examples.

I don't know if it was about self respect ... I think it had more to do that it was just not accepted by others, especially community. Being part of a community had a bigger grip on the individual. So if you looked bad it would look bad on the community. Therefore people took more care on their appearance, or they would be judged by the others in the community.

@@janboomstam1727 The expectations of the community did play a big role in that yes, you are correct, however that wasn't the only reason men and wemon actually liked and even preferred not just looking there best but also being the best they could be, and as anyone now a days will tell you, if you actually put legitimate effort into being as good as you can be both in physical health and mental health as well as having a strong mental fortitude, then ultimately "dressing nice", and having a well groomed appearance is merely a byproduct of your effort and fortitude. Hence the idea of discipline, if you are someone who chooses to be disciplined and well informed then having other aspects of yourself and your life is going to have a bit of a formal appearance.

@@weisthor0815 The German military was battle tested and they lost. Also, later in the war, Guderian suspended all drill/parade training in favour of combat training. Meaning they were putting more of an emphasis on practical skills than dress and deportment. Nice attempt at putting words in my mouth though.

I think most Germans are perfectionists, not just the Nazis.

I too am a Waffen SS reenactor and there is definitely a stigma not so much within the reenacting community, but with segments of the public at large. I think this stems from most SS reenactors unwillingness or inability to answer tough questions in an intelligent and understanding way. If someone asks you, "Why do you do this?" or "Why reenact SS?", you can't just answer with because the uniforms are cool or something about someone needing to be the bad guy. This is something I have been working on within my unit. To have everyone able to speak intelligently on not only why they do it, but the seriousness that comes with portraying such a universally reviled organization. It's also important not to perpetuate "reenactorisms" like downplaying the role of the Waffen SS in atrocities or claiming there was a hard distinction between Waffen SS and the arguably far worse Totenkopfverbande. It's also important to not dismiss questions with "they were just soldiers" as that's not really accurate. Many of the foreign SS units were definitely less political, but at the end of the day, the SS, the Waffen SS included, was the political army of National Socialism. I personally believe you have to be able to explain that as an SS reenactor or you're doing a disservice to yourself, the hobby and meaningful historical discourse. I enjoy digging into the particular unit histories and the intricacies of uniform details as much as anyone, but that shouldn't be the extent of your knowledge, otherwise you're just a LARPer who's spent way too much money. I'd rather have 10 guys with ok uniforms who can really engage with people and explain how what we do humanizes those that we have turned into boogeymen and allows people to understand that there wasn't anything special about them that allowed them to commit evil, that it's within all of us to become monsters over one guy with a perfect kit who says things like, the uniforms are cool, or Waffen SS wasn't political.

And despite all of this, even before the few million foreign volunteers Germany had fighting for her (including Africans/Arabs/Asians/Indians and many more-making the German military the most racially/ethnically/religiously diverse fighting force in modern history) in the Waffen-SS and Wehrmacht, they STILL almost and very much could've won. Had A.H. not allow the British to escape Dunkirk, and had they been prepared for the Russian winter, both Churchill and Stalin are tossed in a dungeon and eventually executed as war criminals.

There were several German nationalist/anti-Semitic groups, long before Hitler and the Nazis, that adopted the swastika as their emblem. One of them was the Thule Society. I forget the others, but there are plenty of books and videos on the subject.
