I once convinced half of the males in my form that women have longer hair generally because they have nerves in their hair so it hurts to get cut.

Technically that's correct, since there are nerve terminations in the root of the hair, that's why it hurts when the hair is pulled off.

Siiri Cressey Or just the “sheltered” ones who have had little to no exposure to or explanation of women. And yes, sometimes parents intentionally keep their sons away from exposure to and explanation of the female gender. It's usually the fathers who do it, from what I've heard, but oddly, mothers are occasionally complicit. Sexism is really weird sometimes...

And then I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum where people ask me how I can stand having hair down to my waist, because apparently by modern standards that's "unusually long". Regardless of what we do, it's like people can't just accept that we chose our hair length and styles, because we fucking like it and that's it.

I wanted to cut my hair when i was in highschool but my mom said if its too short to make braids i would have to brush it every day, i immiditly gave up. I hate maintaining hairstyles. Though i still wanna see myself in short hair. But i also like long curls, im thinking of getting my hair cut just so i can wear wigs. Wig maintanence seems a lot easier then hair maintanence. And ues i know im very lazy about my hair but wigs let you change hair styles more and i can still get my short hair styled sometimes

I think the real question is "Why is short hair the go-to hairstyle for men"? Hair will grow long naturally. It's a lot more work to keep it short in my experience.

Yes I personally like my hair short-ish (above shoulders), a few years ago i let it grow and it was so low mainteinance, now that I'm back to short I have to cut it every 8 weeks or so. When I had a pixie it was every 3-4 weeks, it was crazy.

@savannah4439
@savannah4439 7 жыл бұрын
Sarah Bouachir my guess is that she said that because many African women don't wear their hair long, and "western" is just a more specific term that she can speak on with some authority (because she's not eastern). Also "western" just rolls off the tongue better than "western and eastern except many African regions"
@sarielizard1
@sarielizard1 7 жыл бұрын
Savannah Thats silly, she didnt have to specify at all. I'm north african, we wear our hair long too and so do many women. A few minority groups not doing it doesnt mean she had to say that. Do you realize that the east includes most of the populated world? India, Russia, China, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Eastern Europe, Turkey...these are all in the east. Its nonsensical to say western. Some western civilizations had short hair too. Look at native populations in South America. Thats in the "west". Either way it doesnt make a bit of sense.
@savannah4439
@savannah4439 7 жыл бұрын
+Sarah Bouachir Hey, you're talking to the wrong person about that; I'm just guessing here lol. She's just talking on what she knows. She's western, and what she sees is long hair on women, so it's not incorrect for her to say so. Sure, there are always exceptions (you said so yourself about your own community), so by that logic making any sort of general statement about anything would be erroneous/silly. Also, Northern Africa is very different culturally than sub-Saharan Africa (as I'm sure you very well know), which is what I was referring to (sorry about the misunderstanding; I should've specified)
@Ashtonolivia
@Ashtonolivia 7 жыл бұрын
I'm also going to put money that she's simply staying safely in the bounds of only speaking to what she knows to be true; which is, female hair trends in western society. It's not necessarily discounting Eastern women, just not wanting to put her foot in her mouth by putting a blanket statement, especially when, by talking about women globally, you have to address the cultural standards that influence the women in those respective cultures. HSW tends to stick to short videos, and while I'd 100% be interested in a lengthy video discussing the matter in detail, it was likely a combination of CYA of not speaking out of turn about cultures she's not well acquainted with (presumably) and saving time by narrowing the topic to a very specific group (Western women, particularly western white women).
@user-qx8cz9yx9v
@user-qx8cz9yx9v 7 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure she just didn't want to generalise all cultures bc there are some cultures that aren't like that and she can't be an expert in hairstyles and gender in every single culture on Earth. I'm Korean and traditionally men had long hair too, (and men have been cutting their hair short because of the Westernisation of our modern culture) so it wouldn't be applicable if she said just "women", because not all women are from the culture Cristen's from.

Some of that is because as you get older, it becomes a little difficult on some women to maintain and care for long hair. Things can get in the way as the body grows old such as arthritis or some sort of muscular thing. It's just easier to keep the hair short when you're an old biddy.

It's always the same answer: People's disrespectful reactions. I mean, for example, Jessie J's case. She shaved her hair for charity and instead of receiving compliments on it, she received disrespectful comments about her new look. Every woman who gets a pixie cut or whatsoever has to deal with this kind of reactions. Like people insulting you because 'you look like a man, a young boy, etc'. And it's not comfortable or fun to do something to feel better with yourself and instead of normal, kind reactions, to get these people trying to bring you down.

Honestly from what I have seen any time a girl gets a pixie cut, bald, etc people instantly shower her with "Oh my god it looks sooo good!" even if it looks terrible on her because they wouldn't want her to feel bad. Maybe that happens with celebrities because their criticism is from anonymous internet users but they probably don't ever care much.

I used to have hair that reached mid thigh, this past summer (June 2016) I cut 25" off and left it right below my shoulders. All throughout my childhood, I believed that women with long hair were the most beautiful and I idolized Rapunzel. My hair made me feel pretty and feminine, and young. I prided myself in having the longest hair in the room anywhere that I went, people always complimented my hair and said they were envious of it. My hair was a defining characteristic of who I was, people recognized me by my hair. My hair had become a sort of security blanket, I refused to even get it trimmed, and cried when my mom forced me to let her trim it. My hair made me feel beautiful and I felt that I had achieved something that I had always wanted. This summer I felt that I'd grown up and I no longer needed my hair as protection. I had always been ready for adventures and eager to try new things in all aspects of my life and appearance, except for my hair. But I reached a point where I felt that I had grown too accustomed to having long hair and this had made me feel too safe and accepted by both myself and society. I was not ready to let go of such a big part of myself and my identity, but I scheduled a hair donation and I asked my mom to cut it off. I almost cried, when she cut the first ponytail off, but I reminded myself that I was doing this for my own personal benefit, but I would also be helping other children. I feel that, in a sense, having short hair has helped me love myself more, because I have found other qualities in myself that can be considered beautiful which I once overlooked. Plus, everyone still likes my hair, go figure.

That's just not true. All women had long hair, not only rich or those of middle class trying to look richer. Poor women just kept it in a braid or bun and only washed it (in case of Europe sometimes wery rarely). Long hair is actually really low maintenance when it is styled that way, making it look good down is a lot harder.

Female beauty standards--ethnicity--Hair Very interesting. Thank you for opening the curtain of this conversation. I am very passionate about this issue. As someone who is of African decent I can say that hair is definitely something that runs deep. In many african societies the way one did her hair was indicative of her status--Very much similar to what you said. Kind of what you said about "the new woman", Idk if you heard about it, but there's a natural hair movement in black communities, especially for black women(maybe men too) to embrace their NATURAL hair and beauty, not conforming to a standard that is completely impossible to live up to. It's a symbol of liberation from what we're not and not apologising for being ourselves. When it comes to beauty standards it's especially hard on young black girls because not only are they vulnerable to the images in the media, others are too, and they feel a type of way about it. There are feelings of inferiority that get mixed up in their identity as a result. I know from experience. I did not feel beautiful unless my mother put harsh chemicals to straighten my hair--I wish that she had taught me to embrace my natural hair the way I do now. I know that I will teach my daughters better. Curly hair does not mean it is bad, straight hair is not good. They are just different. Both are good. Anyway, back to the 'new woman" phenomenon you described... there's this thing called "the big chop" which refers to cutting off all the straight hair and leaving the natural curly hair. Now up to the person to cultivate and grow naturally, the way our hair type is meant to be taken care of...so back to our "roots"...I encourage you to do a youtube/google search on Natural hair journeys before and after "the big chop". I'm also Jamaican and I can tell you a bit about Rastafarianism. I am a rasta at heart! check the link to inform yourself about what it is! --listverse.com/2014/01/06/10-things-to-know-about-rastafari-beliefs/ They believe that body is the temple (like the bible says), and that we're taught to work with what was given to you and grow your hair long (most often in dreads, but not always...becasue it's the most organic way to deal with Afro hair-- or any other hair type). Liberation. Beauty. Identity. That's what hair means for me.

Interesting, and thank you for sharing! I have a friend who has just made a decision to go natural with her hair. I told her she looked beautiful, and she does. Kelly York No worries regardless of your height, hip length is long hair! Again I don't want to be the say all and be all in this topic but what I've seen is that in google when you search for medium hairstyles or when you hear references in magazines, they talk about medium hair as being near shoulder length. Over here, anything less than waist length is medium so bra strap length, mid-back and Kristen's hair (and mine) would be medium. My grandma and aunts and some friends lol gush over hip and tail bone length hair. And there was this girl who would pluck all the hibiscus flowers and some henna leaves from our garden to make thali (a homemade shampoo/conditioner for hair) for a her hair. And she had almost knee length lol. Anyways, I personally adore waist length hair and asymmetrical bobs. Those are hot.

Having short hair is just so liberating and easy to take care of. Every time I see another girl with short hair I feel like we make some kind of connection even if we only make eye contact. I can't imagine growing it out again!

+Kalei Valery Not that you should cut your hair based on what men think or anything, but I think there are a lot of men who think short hair looks great. Sometimes they don't say this, because idiots will say "what, are you attracted to women who look like little boys or something? are you gay?" That's interesting about making eye contact with another short haired girl and feeling a connection. I wonder if that happens for guys with long hair too.

Mau I wouldn't totally agree with that. Even if the cultural norm was having short hair, the fact is still that I just LOVE having mine long! My hair is almost to my knees, and I do get told that it's weird and that it's too long sometimes. I have friends who suggest to me that I should cut it. But my hair is a way to express myself and who I am, whether the people around me like it or not. My long hair isn't something that's holding me back, it's a tool of empowerment that I use to show everyone that I love myself and I love my body exactly the way it is.

I cut my hair into a very short pixie three and a half or so years ago. It happened before the trend hit full force and I was in high school, I instantly became a lesbian in the eyes of all of my school mates and even some of my friends. I was mocked and teased and even hit on BY actual lesbians. All because of my short hair cut.I still dressed very femininely, I wore dresses and high heels and wore makeup. However at the same time a short haircut immediately led to being lesbian. I am a straight woman, but even today despite short hair cuts being a more normal trend, I am pegged as being homosexual. Why is this such a strong opinion? Why is short hair immediately tied with being lesbian or being a less feminine woman? I am very comfortable with myself and my sexuality and having short hair makes me feel sexier and more womanly than long hair ever did. But for so many other people it immediately marks short haired women off as no longer feminine. Why? Why, why, why?

This is nothing more then my personal experience with the whole lesbian short hair thing. Almost every girl I know/knew who came out as lesbian cut their hair very short just before or just after coming out, maybe symbolising the new way they want to be seen by everyone? Maybe showing they aren't trying to appeal to the male standard of beauty? Who knows it' probably different for every girl. Another thing is a lot of lesbians have very short hair no matter their clothing style, it's kind of the same thing as a guy getting a piercing in only his left ear, sometimes people will assume he's gay, sometimes it's just the trend.

Ethnic POV: Many African American women CANNOT grow our hair long and flowing because it is not the nature of my hair. I have 4C type curls (the tightest curl possible) and have no certainty on how long my hair is because I do not straighten it. Curly my hair is up above my ears, wet in the shower the weight of the water pushes it down passed my shoulder blades. When I made the decision to go natural (cutting off all of my chemically straightened hair in order to let my hair just grow out the way it is) it was EXTREMELY defeminizing(?) because I had to give up what is so interwoven with young female attractiveness esp. in the African American community. Although even mainstream society is beginning to create more visibility for natural haired women of color I am still questioned on a daily basis as to why I allow my hair to grow out of my head the way it naturally grows out of my head, how much more beautiful I would be if I straightened it and foolish I am for not doing so in professional settings and am compared to men because of its apparent short length.

It's not just white people, it's everyone except African Americans. And all of them have a biological advantage over African Americans for attracting men. I think this is one of the biggest reasons why American men usually choose any other woman available before an African American. The more African American women as a whole are associated with short hair, the less attractive and feminine they will be seen as in general (including the individuals with longer hair). In a society where African Americans are not the majority, it is necessary for African Americans to be able to keep up with everyone else.

Back in the 80s, it was fashionable for men to have long hair (maybe not guys in offices, but regular guys), and for women to have short hair (across the board), and yet, one of the favorite gags of movie-writers was the woman being mistaken for a man until she takes her hat off to reveal long hair. I keep my hair pretty short, around chin to shoulder length most of the time. It's always been a practicality thing. I have really thick hair so if it's longer and not layered, it kills me during the summer. Plus, I dye my hair a lot. Less hair, less dye needed, less money out of my pocket. Even with it being chin-ish lengths, I needed a ten dollar thing of bleach to lighten it and two things of ten dollar containers of the color I want. If I let it get shoulder length, I need a third thing of color dye. So, I keep it above my shoulders.

Mariah Osborne Right? I don't see how your preference for comfort has any correlation to your health. Everyone has different tolerances and preferences. I used to prefer my hair short because with alopecia it was constantly coming in at odd times so short pieces would stick straight out of a longer cut. It was easier to maintain a healthy head of hair by keeping it short. Other than an annoying auto immune issue I've always been healthy. Currently I'm in remission and just now learning how to manage actually having longer hair (and it's never been so thick before!) so I completely understand your point.

I am a woman with short hair and it never ceases to surprise me how so many people have an opinion on my hair when it was never a topic in conversation and they just feel free to comment weather positive or negative. most of my female friends say they love it but they wouldn't have the courage to cut their own hair that short, "But it looks great on you!" already alluding to the fact that my short hair is somehow weird. and unfortunately most of the guys that comment straight up tell me that I was much prettier with long hair and they wish I wouldn't cut it. I've developed a tougher skin about my appearance now since cutting my hair because of all the comments, but at the end of the day I know I like my hair. I think it suits me and all these comments shouldn't change how I feel about myself.

For years, I wanted to cut my hair short but was afraid of all of the negative feedback I would get. I mean, seriously, I was getting tons of slack just for even having the idea. One thing I heard more than anything else was, "You just don't have the face for a pixie/short hair." I think people just have an idea of what face should have short hair and that idea of someone with a rounder face and a short haircut freaked them out. It wasn't until I was at my lowest emotionally when I finally just decided to do what I wanted for a change. Since then, its been a roller coaster of contentment and shaming. Some days I love what I've done and some days I want to hide until I grow my hair out. The pixie cut has forced me to accept myself for what I look like on the outside by looking deeper than my physical appearance. There are plenty of people who gawk at me and make me feel like my hair bothers them but what am I supposed to do about it? Let it grow out? Psh! Please, unless I want to have a mullet for three months, it stays a pixie.

*A question for next time-* Firstly its very cool that you read these. I was wondering what you thought about the 'semi acceptance' of gay culture. Things are booming right now in the LGBT community and that's great, but I have encountered a certain trait in a lot of my straight friends. I'd like to say my friends are not homophobic and are amazingly lovely people, however, I often find in conversation with them that I feel a little awkward talking about anything 'not straight.' They are totally ok with my sexuality, yet I feel like the subject of 'gay' is something that should only be brought up now an then in their eyes. I get the feeling that I shouldn't talk about it too much around them, which is odd since I find that almost every conversation (especially with my guy friends) has traits of heterosexuality. I have also been occasionally by people that they are totally fine with people being gay, but they shouldn't let it 'define them'. This is odd, since you wouldn't say to a straight person, 'that's ok, just don't let your straightness define you.' Because of course your sexuality defines you. In a world where heteronormatisom seems to dominate every aspect of human life, I find this almost hypocritical, as if even the most accepting straight people can sometimes see being gay as a small part of someone's life style choice as opposed to the core part of someone's being (such as being straight is considered.)

Yes. Practically all my good friends are straight, and while I usually feel accepted by them, I still feel highly uncomfortable bringing up anything overtly "gay". I often feel like they like to forget that I'm not straight. I used to hang out with a homosexual guy, because he was in my class and I was the only one that properly accepted him but I just generally didn't give a shit what people were into or what they thought of me. lol Despite this, when he would start talking about his relationships and stuff I really wanted to treat his stories like I would from a straight guy, but I just simply couldn't. I'm a very visual person and when I think of something I instantly imagine it visually and that's where the problems arose. Whenever he started talking about 'good kissers' or 'wasn't any good in bed', I'd picture that stuff in my head and I'd get really uncomfortable. Even though I've always been very comfortable with my own sexuality. And I think many people are like that. They project themselves into the story and if the story is like a strange sexual nightmare to them, they will get uncomfortable. Even so, I still let the guy tell his stories, but I'd change the subject if it went on for too long. This is why I don't understand why gay guys like it when I talk about my 'straight' stories, shouldn't they be disgusted? or are they torturing themselves for my sake? I don't get...
@athompson7712
@athompson7712 10 жыл бұрын
zinowor I understand and respect your point, but I don't actually know many people that have that problem. For example, my straight friends talk about their sex in detail all the time, and it doesn't bother me in the slightest. I think you might be in the minority? I'm not sure, don't take my work for it. But I think straight guys can be a bit more stingy with this kind of thing, only because that's how they are raised. I was considerate of you to continue to let him tell his stories though :) However, if it makes you uncomfortable, just tell him your not that much of a 'graphic' person, im sure he'll understand- don't suffer out of politeness.

Hair was almost always throughout history seen as beautiful. Long lustrous hair on women was particularly seen as a sign of health and fertility which (as with most outward signs of health and fertility) then became a beauty symbol. This is not completely unfounded as changing hormone levels during pregnancy and ovulation can actually improve the quality and thickness of women's hair and this would've been observed by ancient people too. Long hair was also seen as a status symbol, with long well groomed and styled hair signaling that the person had the time and money to worry about their hair rather than just working all the time, also that they didn't have to worry too much about lice. Men found women's hair, when it was long, shiny and healthy to be erotic in the same way that other visible "signs" of fertility were seen as erotic, like full breasts and curvy hips. And heavily adorned long hair (adorned with ornaments made of precious metals and stones or expensive ribbon) was a sign of a wealthy woman, also an attractive marriageable prospect. This is why women often covered their hair after marriage. That sexiness was now just for their husband's eyes and they no longer needed to advertise how fertile and/or rich they were cause they already had a man. As pointed out in the video, outward signs of masculinity like beards, moustaches and chest hair were also usually perceived as signs of strength and virility which women naturally found attractive and that's why men would grow beards as signs of masculinity (there are many cultures which are exceptions to the rule of course. Ancient Roman men, for example) in a similar way to how they would strive for broad shoulders and a "strong" looking physique. In more recent years (and ancient Rome to use them as an example again) men cut their hair short and shaved their beards in favour of a look they perceived as neat, tidy, clean and functional. That is to say, they wanted a hairstyle that would be quick and easy to wash, dry and go, and that would be easy to rid of lice. Especially for soldiers who often had to live in close, unhygienic quarters. The short haired look for men gained traction in the 19th century and early to mid 20th century, a period of time largely characterized by major wars with young men being drafted wholesale and soldiers and the "soldier boy look" being fetishised in the media. Women also cut their hair shorter at some points during this time. Again due to reasons related to the wars (lack of time, mourning, protest etc) however once the wars were over they'd grow their hair long again to reclaim their feminity and, indeed, sexiness, because following wars we usually need a boost in the population. In the 60's and 70's men and women of the hippy subculture grew their hair long as a sign of protest of what they perceived as an oppressive culture and also, in America, of the "soldier look" due to the highly unpopular Vietnam War. The clean shaven, very short haired look is not a totally new one for Western men (again, Ancient Rome) but it often goes out of fashion in favour of the more "rugged" bearded look which is perceived as more outwardly masculine (and therefore attractive) to us. Similarly, short haired trends for women come in and out of fashion in brief flashes. Long hair is perceived to be more feminine (and therefore more attractive) to us. The reasons for these things are related to fertility and therefore the imperative to find a good mate and continue our species. These are very generalized statements of course. Some men prefer women with short hair and some women prefer men who are totally clean shaven and have minimal body hair. I'm speaking broadly in terms of the majority and just giving a few reasons for why these things came about.

@kattykleo8579

But why is the length so important when it comes to women? Men will be praised for having "a full head of hair" but no one expects a man's hair to be longer than earlobe length, if that. This goes beyond good health. I think it has more to do with traditional ideas of vanity and gentility. These are the oldest traits associated with femininity. Maybe the idea is that if she has long hair, she's spending time on her looks, which is a feminine pursuit. And if she has time, patience and artistic skill to make her hair look good, she is more "genteel" and feminine. Well-groomed hair is an outward sign that she takes care of herself and she might show the same care and attention to a man's needs. It shows she is proper, gentle and maybe obedient. These are attractive traits to a lot of men historically and still to this day. Also... Voluminous long hair visually complements a woman's curves. It balances out her figure and makes a pretty picture.

I had short hair as a kid because I was in an accident when I was 5, and had to cut a bunch of hair off to properly apply bandages around my ears and the rest of my head. I would get pitying or confused looks from people NOT because of the horrible scarring on one side of my head, but because I had a "boy's cut". I often was called "sir" or "mister" by substitute teachers in school, and was torturously made fun of my classmates for it. I have since bounced between long hair and super short a few times, but now that I have a straight up pixie and it's the shortest it's ever been, I'm also the most confident I've ever been. I have zero shame in correcting someone when they address me as a man, and have no problem negating every point they make about me looking "dikey". I tell them they only thing my haircut does is make me look fuckin' ADORABLE. POWER TO THE PIXIE! :)

+holycrappitsjo That sucks that kids made fun of you for that. It's hard to blame the teachers though, you can't really tell the gender of a little kid just by their face, people have to guess based on the clothing and hair. It's probably too bad your mom didn't dress you in an extra-girly way to prevent mixups like that.

My mom views long hair as an inconvenience, so she's always preferred keeping her hair short. she never quite understood that I like having my hair long. When I had short hair as a kid I'd get told I looked like a boy. Maybe that had some effect on me later, but I just really like having long hair. I keep some fringe around my face that's cut to about bob length so that it frames my face. It can also be braided back with the rest of my hair if I so choose.

When I cut off all my hair the only person who was even slightly critical of it was my boyfriend. I was overwhelmingly complimented by friends and even strangers, but he had real problems coming to terms with it. After a year I started growing it out again, probably more to please him than myself, and while he's much happier I can't help feeling like I'm letting myself down. I like my hair in a bob, but still fantasize about going super short again.

Many black women in Africa choose to have their short because they find it neat and easier to maintain - you'll notice many schools (primary and secondary) that require both boys and girls to keep short hair (as in a buzzcut...think Lupita Nyongo). It is a whole lot of work trying to grow and maintain black hair.

I just think whether a person has short or long hair depends on whether is suits their face or not. Some girls look good with short hair, some don't. Some guys look good with long hair, some don't. And vice versa.

I just want to say that while like most guys I unfortunately find long hair 10x more beautiful and feminine than a pixie cut or some other short style (for countless reasons including being fun to play with), I recognize the amount of work that goes into maintaining the hairstyle every day! I know you could cut it all off if you wanted to, saving you lots of time and money, making a statement, feeling the breeze, etcetera... but knowing that you instead choose to put in that effort (which guys like me won't) makes it all the more attractive! It doesn't go unnoticed and you are appreciated!

absentmindedprof I've also heard that people began wearing wigs to cover up their natural hair because they didn't have easy access to baths, so they rarely cleaned their hair. because of that, their hair was probably greasy and stinky, so the wigs covered that up.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I may have mixed up the facts a bit, but Louis the XIV was the who first enforced his council to wear powdered wigs. This was because he was going bald and was jealous of their hair. He used it as a way to avoid judgement because his hair was thinning. This may have lead them to coming into fashion. As well, Marie Antoinette was known for her elaborate wigs (in the time of Louis XVI, right before the revolution) so these were also made a fashion staple in France because of the influence she had through the people.
@9Nikko8

Gaby Fawcett is right. I had a fashion project on Baroque for one of my classes and Louis XIV imposed this trend because he was going bald and didn't want this to derogate his authority. Those wigs were generally worn by the upper classes and unfortunately they had to wear wigs for every occasion and there were collection of wigs (balls, theater, shopping, church and so on) but they had to wear them even if they stayed home or had a bath (there were specific wigs). I think the powder had started being used because the massive wearing of the wigs was provoking lice and that's also a reason for the perfumed wigs, besides the bad hair maintenance that was resulting in degradation and bad smell. I hope I have expressed myself well enough for you to understand everything :D

I have a pixie cut now. I had extremely long hair just a month ago. I have gone from very long hair to all kinds of short cuts like clock work through out my life. The majority of the time, I was donating my hair. I've bleached, I've dyed, I fell in love with blow-drying, I've been addicted to straightening, I've journeyed the never ending quest of mastering fancy braids. I've never covered my hair and have hardly ever worn an accessory in my hair. It's just hair and I prefer to have fun with it. Being part of an interracial family, I've styled multiple hair textures of different lengths. Some natural, some permed. It's all very different, but I love all hair. I know that might seem unfair, coming from me because I don't have to worry about the same things with my hair and it isn't always easy. I'm going to go out on a limb and just say what I think: I don't like media forced beauty assimilation. It's cliché but true; Everyone is beautiful just the way they are. I would love to see your follow up on this. Maybe you could reach out and get a fellow youtuber to feature and back up the research with some personal thoughts.

Funnily enough, my mom always wanted - and still wants - my hair nice, short and in that weird white-suburban-mom-ish attempt at a bob she and my sister wear and I hate it, I hate it, I hate it, I hate it! When I was little, I'd always be forced to the hairdresser and lose whatever hair I'd grown out and... by now, for this and some stuff in my medical history, I came to associate my long hair with control over my life and my health. We still argue about it, since my mom associates short hair with practical thinking and "It's much easier, you don't have to brush it, more time for other stuff"... basically, she associates short her with being a grown woman who has no time for frivolities, because there's shit to get done (and she gets A LOT of shit done). I associate long her with being in control and we constantly clash about it. It's super annoying. (and I think if she stopped bugging me about trimming my hair I'd ACTUALLY CONSIDER DOING IT. ... yeah, I'm such a grown up, I know) Bottom line is, I get shit done while having long, glossy locks, that incidentally offer a ton of ways for me to express myself and also look better on me than short hair. So, yeah, the associations to female hair can also be highly individualized and these days might also be informed by your social background (my family is comfortably nestled in the former GDR. Republic of the Workers and Farmers, YAAAAAY... ... so that might have to do something with the notion of long hair being an unnecessary frivolity only those evil, evil rich people have.

The niqab and hijab only later became associated with Islamic cultures (and not the religion itself) - initially it was a Persian custom that allowed upper class women to differentiate themselves from lower class women. It has nothing to do with the religion itself. Only recently with the rise of Saudi-funded Wahhabism you see this broad sweeping push towards the hijabization and covering of women with this uniform. The Quran only says that women AND men should be modest - not that they should be covered up and hidden away.

Adan Hassan Nope, they are just paraphrasing the exact sura that talks about hijab. That's why you can still be a Muslim, but not cover your hair. It's a personal choice. Again, the cultural beginnings of hijab had more to do with upper class women being "hidden away," by their rich husbands than any religious reason. Lower class women wanted to emulate that status symbol and this head covering was born. Which is what I learned in my middle eastern studies and Arabic classes in university from Jordanian and Syrian professors.

I had medium length hair and then I shaved it off for a family member of mine that went through cancer and chemo. It was something to get used to but I loved from the very minute I shaved off my hair! I have kept it shaved for awhile since then and I keep on loving it. It is so much easier getting ready and I feel so much more feminine without hair than when I did have hair. I have had people question me and stare but it does not bother me. I have a lot more confidence in myself. I have been given a new outlook on beauty and what it means to me. Hair does not define a person or say how beautiful a person is. With or without hair every woman is beautiful and feminine!

So you base your thesis on something an evolutionary psychologist allegedly said, which he believes for reasons you have failed to name? This makes no sense. Look at hairstyle trends in history, men have had long hair in western society a long time ago, but it's generally shorter in societies with more militaristic pursuits, and whats stronger, or more admirable than a soldier? So naturally it would become associated with the masculinity, and discipline that a militaristic society values. So why do women have long hair? Because they don't fight in history. Of course this is broad strokes conjecture, but it makes a hell of a lot more sense than some guy saying some thing because unnamed reasons. I'm open to dialogue, but this video is ridiculous.

The video says that those studies pointed out that long hair is a sign of fertility and it was culturally reinforced and it provides a small sign of it with Bible verse. I got those arguments, did you? But I agree that the video fails to go more in detail and provide more evidence. And I would go as far as to say that the video only applies to white women born in the US. Mainly, whe she starts talking about he 20s.

In some asians cultures married women have short hair while single women have long hair, is a way to say they are married, but also many times when a married woman cut her hair is because she has (or will have) babies, be easier to take care kids with short hair... There are several reasons of short hair in married women, some say is a status (or inform men she is married), other say is because a married woman has no time to take care of their hair (taking care of their husbands and kids), etc... There is also status, my grandma told me that in her time women used long wigs because having a nice long hair means they have money and status...

Thank you for the video. I agree with you. However, I’d like to add two other factors. 1. Long hair is versatile - women usually pay attention to details (well, more than most men 😉) - that’s why most of them prefer to experiment with many different hairstyles. The truth is that every haircut that ends at the shoulders and above (or even one inch below the shoulders) has only one styling option... 2. Short hair is high maintenance as hell (well, maybe except super short pixie cuts). It’s terribly time consuming and quite expensive to deal with almost every short haircut. When I had a bob haircut I had to wash it every single day and I had to style it every single day. I also had to spend lots of money on expensive hair products- not to have a frizz-ball on my head and not to have damaged hair by heat tools. That’s why I decided to grow my bob out- and that’s why most women usually grow their hair out after one or two „adventures” with short hair.

I really hope you discuss the topic of hair standards for different ethnic groups. I know that personally as an African American female I have felt a lot of pressure to keep my hair a certain way. I have been in relationships where my significant others would show distaste if my hair appeared shorter or it wasn't straightened. It took a very long time for me to be okay with having short curly hair, and I'd really like to know why society puts that kind of pressure on people.
