Yao is the only freakishly tall nba player that was highly skilled. Yao would've been a great player even if he "only" was 6"10. Because he was so skilled. He moved very smoothly which is incredibly rare at his height. Most bigs at 7"0 dont even have the finesse he did.

Yung Sung Plenty of players are injury prone, but are absolute monsters when healthy. Derrick Rose is an all-star caliber when healthy, and we have seen him do so with enough minutes, he just tries to play safer. Curry himself is pretty injury-prone, but he can go on a massive run and any team against him will be down by 30 in the next 4 minutes. Anthony Davis has that glass-body, but he’s regarded as the most unstoppable player today, if he’s healthy. No matter how fragile you are, if you’re THAT good, then you’re THAT good.

I think the most underrated part of his game was his free throw percentage. he averaged 83% from the line. that puts him in the top 100 ALL TIME in free throw % as a 7'6" center. not only did hacking him not work, it would've actually benefited him. and the fact that teams didn't want to send him to the line meant that they couldn't be as rough with him, when you were already giving up at least 6" if not, more to the guy. all I need is to see is 12:23 ... Ben Wallace was probably the best defensive big man in the entire NBA at that time and yao just ate him for lunch. incredible

It makes me laugh when he was nominated to HOF and some people, supposedly NBA "specialists" and I'm not sure if not former players, possibly HOF, questioned whether or not Yao Ming deserved it. First of all, it's a Basketball HOF, not NBA HOF and Yao did a lot for basketball, he basically made a billion people aware of it. You can look on KZfaq, there are videos of Chinese kids training hard since little, there is one that looks like a Basketball Kung Fu camp. Besides that he was also a great player and a very skilled one that played at a high level as long as it lasted - if it wasn't for injuries, who knows what T-Mac and him could had achieved. I know that he was voted All-Star part of it simply because China was behind him but that certainly does not take away from him, he did deserve becoming a HOF. I didn't know that it would be in 2016, but sooner or later he would be one.

Yes, Yao absolutely deserves to be in the HOF. That was also one of the reasons why there was a debate on whether he should be enshrined as a player, or a contributor (yes, there is this category in the HOF). Eventually, he got in as a player, meaning that his achievements on the court were taken into account more than off the court.

Yao's averages are actually hof worthy, it's just the longevity that some people call into question. Also, as a side note, even shaq never had an over 30 point 10 reb season, so that bar is way too high.

Yao told that he was not a good FT shooter , he even could not hit one in half hour , and much frustrated was his mom and coach spent their time to wait him finish his 100 FT not matter how long . He realized he had to beat that , so he practiced really hard on FT and that's why his FT is 85 percent which we never see a Center do FT when it's technical fault .

One of the greatest "what if-s?" of all time. Those days were when I became a Rockets fan. Now I'm ashamed to be one. How did we go from having the greatest winning streak of all time(in my opinion, the underdog winning streak), to having EVERY SINGLE PLAYER complaining about EVERY SINGLE FOUL being called? The Rockets are just pitiful now. Thank God the season has been suspended, and I hope Harden and Westbrook get outta here soon, so we can start fresh(again).

Yao was the last great big man. Too bad his injuries limited his career in the NBA. It's so sad to see how low the center position has fallen when the best centers today can't even master one of Yao's low post moves... If it ain't a dunk, they can't make it. Oh yea, the video forgot to mention that Yao was an over 80% FT shooter. Teams couldn't even hacka-Yao.

Irto Simbiak Well, I was really talking about legitimate 7'+ centers. Timmy was a PF who transitioned into the center spot when he got old and after all the good centers died out. He didn't directly matchup with Shaq or Yao for the most part. He usually had a Robinson, Nesterovic, and etc. for that.

Fans in America can just wait til the night and watch games easily but for the fans in China like us, most of us watches every single game of Yao from different methods. We might get caught by our teacher but as long as we can watch Yao plays that will be worth it. After classes all the boys in the class will be talking about Yao's performance, Kobe's performance,etc. For you guys,he might be just a great player and a great person, a bit doubtful to be in the Hall of fame, but for we Chinese fans, Yao is the best memories of our youth days.大姚 你是我们这一代人的青春啊！

Saying Chinese people only liked NBA basketball because Yao is in the NBA is projecting American racism against blacks onto China. Even when Yao was playing in Houston, Tracy McGrady's jersey sold more in China than Yao's Jersey. Other black players like Kobe and Lebron are just as popular as Yao in China. The Chinese dont give a fuck if you are Asian or Black, if you are amazing at basketball, they will love you.

As a Chinese from Shanghai, he is my pride and deserve be in the hall of game. I am 100% biased but I think he is one of a kind player are tall and skilled. He production was limited by injuries and other reasons.( 2008 Olympic was a huge blow to him because he played without the clearance from Doctor for stress fracture) but this is Basketball HOF not NBA HOF. So I think he deserve to be voted in

It's always great to have someone from your home city that you can be proud of. He is a great inspiration, not only as a basketball player, but also a successful individual in general. I hope his achievements can become a symbol to the younger generations in your city and the rest of the world. As to his shortened career, I remember that Bill Russel once commented that if Yao hadn't played for the Chinese national team that frequently (As far as I recall, he played for the national team even in minor tournaments. Correct me if I'm wrong about this.) Considering that he already had to play 82 games in the regular season and some more games in the playoffs, adding a dozen games during the off season without proper rest certainly had worn him off much faster. It was a shame that there weren't enough Chinese stars who could share his load for your country.

They did advance, and took the Lakers to game 7 solely on Yao's shoulders while Mac battled back spasms. Kobe essentially dove for the ball and took out Yao's knees lmao, and he got injured too so essentially that dream wasn't to be.

Great analysis. I just want to add that Yao's free throw is also one of reasons why he was such an unstoppable force in the court. Being a center, you are guaranteed to be fouled against a shit ton in a game. Coupled with an 85%+ of free throw accuracy, which is a number completely unheard of from a C... you get a monster. That basically means one way or another he's gonna put the ball in that basket and there's nothing you can do.

Dwight was good, but most of the time when a player gets injured he does not return the same. Look at D-Rose... Hell even KD! Compare his 2014 season to this one. Only PG looks almost the same, but is hard to get back to your old self

Awesome video but can't believe you didn't mention yao's awesome free throw shooting skills. His free throw shooting skills made it so no one could employ "hack a Shaq" strategy on him and he was often the shooter for the team's technical free throws. think about the last NBA team that sends their big man to shoot technical free throws?

It was great to see you appreciate his balance of skill, strength, tactics, and something you can't teach...height! I like how you mentioned he had so many weapons and height, sometimes there really wasn't anything you could do about it. "what are you supposed to do?" "that was frankly...unfair" Someone else already mentioned this but he was a great FT shooter too! There's no hack-a-Yao...last year was 93.8%! I noticed you didn't really have any criticism worth mentioning in the video too.The only thing I can think of, in today's NBA, what would Yao in his prime do when the Warriors use his man to screen for Curry?!?

A lot of people don't understand that Yao was nominated as an international contributor, while Shaq and AI were nominated as players. In other words his legacy in the league is not even the main reason that he got in. At his prime he was arguably the best center in the NBA. Dwight puts up better stats but got constantly schooled by Yao. But it was his promoting of basketball in China and contribution to the sport in such way that made him worthy. After all it's the Hall of Fame, and Yao has huge fame in China.

Yao entered NBA when I was 6th grade. NBA plays at noon in China, but you can see that any shop/restaurant near my school with a TV were filled with students when there is a Rocket game. I miss those old days...

shaq says that wilt is the most dominant big man, followed by shaq himself. After that the most dominant big men would be kareem and hakeem (hakeem GOAT defender, and kareem arguable GOAT).

his body wore out because he never really got to rest. as soon he was done in the NBA, he was going over to China. never really resting to recover and being a giant was a disaster for his lower body. he was the last big man Shaq respected. dude was an automatic double team whenever he held the ball

I think we need to do because out all the hall of famer Shaq style has change up a lot he use to be this athletic big men that can run the floor like these modern big men to where he put on so much weight in la he became a lot less athletic but so dominant and the post and finally talk about after 35 how letting his weight go had become big issue while dealing with the injury just ended his career I may know a lot I want to hear it from a coaching prospective

Shaq would've been the undisputed GOAT big man, possibly player ever if he had Kobe's mentality of chasing constant improvement and never settling for what he's already achieved. You could tell in the later years he was just letting his talent do most of the hard work, he'd turn up to training camp overweight and he inevitably paid for it with injuries that probably would've been averted if he'd kept in shape. I'd take Olajuwon over him.

Yao was a standout for sure. I don't see how anyone can argue otherwise. I find it hilarious how sometimes he is double or triple teamed and is sometimes able to play like he is unguarded, like he is playing a schoolyard game with kids.
