Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

In the 1930’s , my teenage uncle and his mates used to cycle from Falkirk to the canal tunnel to play ukuleles. The acoustics were great and it must have been fun in that vey dark, damp, echoey tunnel.

As someone that was born in Edinburgh, spent 18 years of my life there and moved to Glasgow and spent another 18 years there before moving to Asia, I can say with somewhat authority that there are arseholes in both cities and also some great and friendly people. Its a shame that this "you'll have had yer tea' then" myth still persists. Maybe because I am from the "greener" side of Edinburgh, we have always been more socialist, more working class, more friendly and more welcoming. But you cant compare Niddrie to Morningside, anymore than you can compare the Gorbals to Newton Mearns, so you simply cant compare Glasgow to Edinburgh (as well you know). I love both cities for many similar and also differing reasons. And aye, I haven't had my tea yet... salt and sauce please! :) Another great video mate!

I’m from Kilsyth and they found the remains of asoldier on a horse from the battle of Kilsyth when they were constructing the Forth and Clyde canal through the Dullatur bog.He had been fleeing the battle after Montrose’s victory and got stuck in the bog. They had to build the stables away from the canal at Kilsyth because the stonework started sinking into the bog. Great video Bruce about the Union canal. The tunnel at Falkirk blasted out of solid rock is really impressive.

@@hotelsierra86 Sturgeon's time is up,only problem is the anti snp votes are split between 3 different parties. To get Sturgeon out, we will all need to agree to vote for the same party. Last 2 elections, I done something that I never thought I would do - voted for Conservatives. I hate them, but I hate them less than the snp so I have been tactical voting since the snp got into power, I feel dirty after it 😆 It's the only way we can get them removed though. 45% of voters vote for snp, 55% are split between Labour, Conservative and Lib dem. Until we can get the 55% to all vote for the same party, we will be stuck with with the snp. Everything has went backwards since they came into power, Education, Health, Police, etc etc etc yet they keep on winning. That shipyard and those ferries are just one of hundreds of disasters, £30m on changing every road sign to have Gaelic on it, yet I don't know anyone who speaks the language. This isn't Wales. End of rant 😆

Last time we were in Scotland, we took a ride up from the lower Forth and Clyde up to the Union Canal. The height difference between the canals is 35m. This is managed by a lock system for 11 of those metres, and the Falkirk Wheel for the other 24. The locks were necessary to prevent damage to the Antonine Wall. (Construction of the Wall was ordered by Antoninus Pius, and started in 142AD.) The visitors centre at the Wheel is utterly fascinating. It covers some of the history, and lots of the engineering. The wheel works on a balance system. Gravity (and gears) gently lower the heavier side, lifting the lighter side in the process. Extra weight is added by allowing more water into the caisson (the open topped 'carriage' the boats ride in). To raise, or lower a boat takes 1.5kWh of power. This is the equivalent of boiling 8 kettles of water. It really is a Scottish engineering marvel. And whilst in the area, a visit to the Kelpies in Grangemouth is a must! They are utterly fantastic. It's worth visiting in the day, and then again after dark when these giant horse heads are lit up from within.

Beautifully told! Amazing story and an amazing piece of our history. Took my children as late teenagers/young adults to see the Wheel. We were living in Spain at the time (for 23yrs), and only managed a few visits to Scotland. One of my daughters, actually born in Spain, was stunned when she saw the beauty of Scotland. Up until then, she only knew Spain and England (where her English granny lived). My wife comes from a family in England that moved from Aberdeen to Kent 100 yrs ago.

I’ve caught many of fish and pulled old coins, a fire poker, a horse shoe ,loads of bikes ,roads signs and trolleys and even some unwanted underwear from the water , still looking for the big treasure lol the bonus to this is because of the popularity of pulling stuff from the canals by magnet fishing we are essentially cleaning it for the future.

I've cycled from Bowling to Edinburgh via the Forth and Clyde canal, the Falkirk Wheel and the Union Canal many times and I love it! The contour canal makes for relentless pedalling, though. I'm from West Lothian and I live in Leith so I have to sit on the fence with respect to the difference in culture between West and East, I'm afraid! Burke and Hare reputedly robbed graves from the graveyard behind my Granny's old house in Bathgate (opposite Kirkton park near the Kaim Park Hotel, which was a stage coach halt back in the day).

I totally agree with you on Glasgow/Edinburgh debate... so far. I moved to Glasgow this march for a new job, up from England (they're pretty frosty down there!). Having been working constantly and unavailable a lot of the time, despite this, in Glasgow I've made a lot of friends already, often just from sitting on my tod in Comedy shows, in cafes, and with people I meet through different companies for work. Glasgow is an incredibly friendly city, and I can see that already! Edinburgh can be friendly in its own way, but I'm yet to make a friend off my own back there, and I visit a lot too! I wonder if the amount of tourism Edinburgh gets, means that people have the mindset of passing through and not stopping to make friends. Perhaps thats a part of it... hmm!

To be honest, when I stood at a bus stop in Edinburgh on my first visit (back in 1971), I was immediately befriended and advised by at least one, maybe two, elderly Scottish women. (At least they seemed elderly to me at the time. Today I might think they were youngsters.) They were very helpful. The only problem was that I hadn't yet learned how to understand a Scottish accent, so their advice was only partly understood.

Thanks for this. The Falkirk Wheel is now on my "next trip bucket list". As to Edinburgh vs. Glasgow: Edinburgh for me. The first time I visited there, I met some lovely people at my hotel. They had come from Caithness for the Royal Highland Show, & insisted on taking me to The Show with them. I had a grand time & met loads of wonderful people. Several of them warned me that Glasgow was a dreary industrial town with little of interest to tourists (one was a woman who lived in Edinburgh & worked in Glasgow. She said she commuted daily rather than live in Glasgow). Ever since, I have loved Edinburgh, but I plan to give Glasgow another chance.

When I was in college I studied Planning Theory. The text for the course was written by an Englishman that didn't speak American. That forced the students and professor to learn English English in addition to a number of engineering terms that added to the challenge. His application tended to be focused upon the London metropolitan highways. If he had used the Union Canal, learning would have been easier and more effective. (Or maybe you should right a book!)

Splendid video. And splendid take on the early Scottish canal history. Contour canals though were nothing new. The Aberdeenshire Canal followed the same engineering principles - @ least as far as the outskirts of Aberdeen. There were no canal locks on the fourteen mile stretch between Inverurie and Bucksburn, then things got difficult and to reach Aberdeen Harbour (a distance of three miles) required seventeen locks plus an extra four hours on what had been a three-hour journey to the city boundaries. The main exports were granite and crops. Main imports were ‘night soil’ for use on the fields. That would be a euphemism for human sh*t. Eventually the canal was taken over by the railways who drained it and demolished several dozen Pictish relics in the process. There’s a full write up on the Aberdeen Canal in my book ‘The Little History of Aberdeenshire’.

Bruce finally made it to my birth place, many a time as a child I'd walk from grannies in Camelon by what was called 3 Bridges till in 50s one collapsed. Up at the back of the park and go up and down walking that canal from were they build the Falkirk wheel, in my day late 70s - 80s that canal had trolleys, bike frames and rubbish in it you could not take a canal boat up it, but they cleaned it up now cause of the wheel which is a good thing. I hope your going up to big remains of Roman fort which is close to wheel, cause when we was young you had a choice go under the bridge that under that part of canal, which I think is were they used to hide the stolen bodies ( someone mentioned it in comments). Take a chance the train not coming and it's a long train tunnel or walk down to Camalon high St and cross over which is time consuming. That's another good reason they build the wheel they put walk bridge over the park canal, the kids there don't know how lucky they are not to have to do the train tunnel route. Am glad I found your channel a year & half ago you always have wealth knowledge ( done your homework). By the way you going get to do one vid on Scotland most famous drink?. And am not talking Whisky ( no good for the Scott's always fighting on that tippel ). Am on about the Bru, the Barr's Iron Bru from girders and there many flavours any time soon?. Cause you know were its origins lays?. Yep Falkirk I kid you not, can't wait 4 your next up load got feeling might be about Roman fort. P.S make sure you go to local pub the Roman bar for a wee dram down in Camalon, but dont get to drunk, you might end up in Sheriff court next door, next day 😅🤣🤣.

Excellent video man this is right up my street I've been very into canals recently just got home from Manchester and while there i was talking to a south African bloke for ages about what its like living onboard and spent hours reading the plaques and boards full of historical information. Ps the canals in glasgow are an amazing place to stop in the summer for picnic and a cheeky can (take your rubbish with ye tho) .

I'm in Clydebank where we had the Singers Sewing Machine factory. In the late sixties (yes, I'm afraid I remember that far back) there was a huge population of goldfish in the F&C from Kilbowie Rd at Clydebank all the way to Bowling. The old Singer sewing machine factory pumped hot water into the canal there (it was about 30 degrees warmer than the surrounding stretch - I can remember seeing solid ice on one side of the road, and steam rising off the canal on the other) and somebody dumped a pond full of goldfish in, which bred like wildfire. It was pretty choked with weed, but we used to drag holes in it and catch little Goldies by the dozen on single maggot. Some of us made a lot of pocket money selling them to pet shops. Lots of pike anglers used to take them away as livebaits as well. In time, they grew a bit bigger and although I never caught one over a pound, I heard of plenty about that size. many of the second and subsequent generations reverted to bronze colouration and looked very like crucians. The Singer factory closed about 1970 and the goldfish more or less died out in the next few years. The last one I caught was sbout 1978, and I imagine any remaining stock will have been wiped out when that stretch was drained for the Millennium Link work in the late nineties.

Amazing story Bruce. Always look forward to your videos. I’ve visited both Glasgow and Edinburgh. Love both cities. I liked Old Town in Edinburgh. Walking the Royal Mile and learning about the history of Edinburgh Castle. I really liked Glasgow and not just because I’m Canadian and they had a Tim Hortons there😂. I loved the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and that whole side of Glasgow on that side of the river. I also really enjoyed walking Buchanan Street and seeing all the 19th-century Victorian architecture.

At the Falkirk wheel we have many German holiday makers who hire narrowboats that they take to Edinburgh then back and down to the Kelpies.. One of my workmates is of German decent.

Thanks for this Bruce. I regularly walk the route of the old Ballochney railway and the monkland canal. I looked on old maps and saw the Slamannan Railway but didn’t realise it was to link passenger to the union canal.
