With this relationship renaissance that is happening right now comes the opportunity to redefine, heal, and allow ourselves to truly be seen, heard, and felt by another. Because we cannot bypass certain parts of ourselves and our partners and expect things to work without DOING the work. (Trust me, I tried.)
Something that often shows up when healing in a relationship is the mother and father wound. Ultimately, our parents are our first relationships and they define how we show up in future relationships whether we are conscious of it or not. This means we are repeating the patterns that were reflected to us by our parents, whether they are good or not.
On this week’s Highest Self Podcast, I am joined by Ehsun Anwar to talk about the mother and father wounds as well as the narcissist and empath dynamic. We talk about how each of these traits can show up in your life plus ways you can heal from them.
In this episode, Ehsun and I explore…
What our upbringings taught us about our parents
What the mother and father wound is
How curiosity leads to healing
How the mother wound shows up in men and women
How the father wound shows up in women and men
What the root of narcissism is
Why people are attracted to narcissists
Why narcissism was once considered sacred
The balance of masculine and feminine energy
What both the feminine and masculine yearning is
And SO much more!
This is one of those episodes that will leave you feeling refreshed with insights to remind you that you are not alone, that you are worthy, and that you are validated in your emotions. Enjoy!

A narcissist lacks empathy for other people. They feel good about hurting people. That's not a personality trait that can be changed. Please do not stay in an abusive situation hoping they can change. They cannot.

For me, the turning point in my life was learning to center myself. Not seek out romantic relationships or the need for external validation. Some mistake that for selfishness and narcissism these days but that word is overused and falsely used. I found when I sought out relationships, I would end up in one but not a good one. When I started focusing more on people that matched my energy in general (any gender, all walks of life, etc.), that is when I found happy and authentic relationships. I feel more consistently fulfilled now than in any of my romantic relationships. We limit our capacity for joy by seeking out romantic relationships and looking to that one person to be our everything.

I absolutely loved this podcast episode. I really enjoyed hearing this perspective, Ehsun is a beautiful soul and I’m happy he spoke his truth even if it triggers others. I also had a narcissistic father and narcissistic ex’s but no where in this podcast did I get the indication to be or stay with a narcissist or hear that it’s okay? Obviously don’t date someone who is abusive or narcissistic - but what the moral of the story is, don’t judge either and have understanding of where it stems from so we can learn from it and move on. The more we judge and shame people, especially for mental and personality disorders, the more it perpetuates the problem. It’s important for people practice nuanced thinking and use their discernment. And I absolutely believe people can change. I’ve seen change in others and myself. A diagnosis is NOT a death sentence. Great podcast per usual Sahara. Thank you for providing such valuable content. 💯

Man I know triggers are a blessing but I don't think this episode is for me. After a life of abuse I finally gave up on changing my narcissist father and just accepted he's a monster and I finally found peace. I saw this and came here to keep narcissists away from me in the future and I come in to some guy telling me narcissists can change? Like yeah no thanks.

I think that the chance for them to change doesn’t mean anyone should keep the hope and stay in an abusive relationship and I also don’t think that’s the message either. It’s up to us to have discernment. I think the message here is, there’s is potential for changes that’s it. And hopefully this podcast will reach those who have and actualiza that potential :)

I Love this conversation. This covers so many important points about the importance of healing ancestral trauma and reclaiming the masculine and feminine strengths. I think the title needs to be changed. This is less about Narcissists and more about the expression of conditioning handed down by Socail constructs, family patterns and the wounding we experience from simply living our lives while trying to evolve as emotionally conscious people.

This was very eye opening. I never viewed my relationship with my dad this way so thank you. I used to think it was just him, but it's true that this is a common mindset men had for generations for survival, it had its benefits in emergencies, and it is harmful to modern day relationships.
