As far as Hololive goes, I'm actually a pretty big Takanashi Kiara fan. She brings a ton of fun and hilarious energy to her streams and is a freaking master when it comes to collabs. her recent collab with Pekora made my entire week. I can definitely agree with Curt on Amelia, though. She's a very close second place for me.

@@TiagoNomad and do you know why? For me it's mostly because, well i rarely watch streams, and if I do, it must be because I see the streamer as a friend almost and value seeing them outside of a scripted/edited video. And for this to happen, for me to feel that attached to a streamer, i think I need to see what they look like IRL as well as value their personalities. With vtubers , i can't see the actual person, nor can you say for sure that they are being themselves 100%, which makes it feel even more fake. Plus the whole shouting profanities just for the sake of being funny isn't my thing

@@MrBsehratmaannking yeah, I don’t usually watch streamers either, but I have enjoyed a few here and there. The girls’ personalities didn’t appeal to me, though. Even the phoenix girl playing one of my favorite games [FE: Three Houses] didn’t hook me in. I even rewatched this and other videos [like MB’s and the Trash Taste ep mentioned here] to see if I get more pumped, but nope. And I’m not bothered by them using anime avatars, but their brand of entertainment is just not for me.

Yeah.. I love the Holostars guys so much, and they deserve way more success than they've earned. It's unfortunate that Holo's whole 'idol culture' hasn't given them the same level of appreciation or success.

@@AwsOm3Fac3 Nijisanji's member base would beg to differ with you :) While they haven't seen the same explosive foreign viewer growth of Hololive in 2020, they are nevertheless a *far* larger organization of streamers. At this point they have more CN streamers than Hololive has in total. Their KR and ID branches are as large as (larger, I believe) Hololive's whole collection of non-JP streamers. And then there's the actual Nijisanji Japan division - over 100 streamers. They're also currently auditioning for an EN division. So yeah, I'd say they're quite a bit larger.

@@AwsOm3Fac3 Oversaturate the market? They launched before Hololive, so I guess that means Hololive were the ones oversaturating the market. For someone who doesn't know jack about the market as a whole, I love that you think you're qualified to talk about what kind of "impact" is being made. I get it, you're ignorant of anything related to vtubers that isn't under Cover Corp's umbrella. But maybe try educating yourself instead of wearing that ignorance as some kind of badge of honor.

@@ihatevnecks7015 honestly dude, I have been in the tuber rabbit hole since November of 2019, I got the hell away from nijisanji because there are too many of them, I love lulu, hana and Katrina but there is just too many for me to care, and yes nijisanji is bigger and has more income, for now.

I feel like this video misses out on 2 very important things: 1. It mentions Hololive as the biggest agency and mentions VOMS and NoriPro. But it doesn't mention the huge agency that is Nijisanji for some reason. I believe that Nijisanji is even bigger than Hololive. Although their biggest vtubers aren't as big as Hololive's biggest, they have a much larger number of big vtubers. 2. It only really talks about the girls, but makes no mention of the boys. For example, Nijisanji's Kuzuha is among the highest earning youtubers period. And since so much focus was on Hololive you could've at least mentioned Holostars.

Hololive and Kizuna AI are the cultural touchstone of vtubers for western audiences, it makes sense they'd be the focus of a video like this, especially if it's what the makers of the video are most familiar with.

Only diva yet doesn't mention Sora. Also hololive is an offshoot of Cover corp which is a tech company that was making live 2D tech that hololive uses. Kind of crazy how Cover Corp went from 2d tech to idols.

@@MrJcTTK Similar story with Ichikara Inc (Nijisanji's owner). They also started with a focus on their proprietary Live2D and V3D apps, and they've since expanded into even including a traditional live idol group, SLEE.

@@joe.5103 I'm not into it myself, but I'll explain what looks appealing to me, and I'll take from a gigguk video I watched talking about why he likes it. First: most people have a lot of time now. Second: the people behind the avatars are pretty talented. Some are good VAs or singers, some have really charming personalities. Third: they swear a lot, and it's really cute. Fourth: there are so many clips. I'm really partial to the clip where a vtuber (fubuki?) sings scatman. Fifth: at a certain point, you kinda forget they're a person and get lost in the fantasy of knowing a real anime girl. I haven't gotten to this stage so idk, but that's how gigguk seemed to feel. If you still don't understand, I'd suggest gigguk's video on the subject, which also suggests a lot of clips to explore. Or you could just forget about it. Find something you enjoy. I personally can't get into breaking bad, or the wire. everyone has their thing

@@joe.5103 My guess of the appeal is that it's basically the same as other personality-based gaming streamers (like Dee Bee Geeks or NerdCubed) but with the added aesthetic of a cutesy anime girl doing it.

If you can understand why someone would like any other streamer or KZfaqr you can understand why someone might like Vtubers. That being said, there are unique elements to Vtubers that can make them stand out among the crowd. There's obviously the appeal of the anime girl (or boy) character designs, but they also often have an extra layer of performance related to their character backstory and lore that evolves over time through interactions with chat and other Vtubers. This will vary from person to person. Some don't bother at all and just stream as themselves. But seeing the ones that do gradually learn to comfortably mix the various aspects of their Vtuber persona and their real persona can be really entertaining and fascinating. There's nothing else quite like it.

I've been a fan of vtubers for, gosh, like six months now or something? But anyway, I enjoyed watching this video, thanks for making it. You mentioned something about it being like seeing these girls develop real friendships but I have to say, to me it's not *like* that, it *is* that. The relationships and affection between these people are very real (even if they play up the yuri aspects for lulz and views). Even though they're portraying a character, that character is very much informed, and formed, by the person behind the avatar, so to me it ends up feeling very genuine, and that's one of the main reasons I love them so much. They are wholesome and heartwarming while being hilariously foul at the same time (or fowl I guess, depending on who you're watching). They are dignified and shameless, virtuous and perverted, just like regular people. They are these characters and their genuine selves at the same time and I think it's wonderful.
