I have often struggled to understand what nearly any lyrical songs say. My brain always pays more attention to sounds over voices. I suppose this is why I most enjoy instrumental or foreign music. So I can fully relate to the feeling of just being "in" the music.

I completely share this with you. Words when they can be understood often just get in the way or corrupt the connection I am making with the music. They are far too specific.

I was first exposed to Sigur Ros in 2006. Changed my life. Whenever I listen to Takk, I am reminded of when I first heard it at my college dorm as snow fell down by the window. The majestic cold icy vibes of that album accompanied by a genuine soul that nourishes in the background. It was escapism through music at its apex.

Similar experience here. I was in college when I discovered their album Ágætis byrjun. My fondest memory is when ( ) came out...I drove to college in a snowstorm, but found classes cancelled. I skipped the expressway and took the long, local road home in the snow while ( ) played.

I’ve always related Sigur Rós with wintertime, especially Takk, Ágætis byrjun and ( )… I’m from Iceland, but I started listening to Sigur Rós when I was 17, and I played those albums on repeat the whole winter, which is probably why I make that connection. But I just feel like the dark nights, ice and snow fit perfectly with the music.

Is a native Icelander I can confirm that even they'r song lyrics that are entirely in Icelandic are not to be understood. At least some of them. They use real words and real sentences, but the the text makes no sense and is never about anything particular. One song though, my personal favorite, is Dánarfregnir og jarðarfarir (Death announcements and burial services). That song has no lyrics in it. The opening tunes are actually derived from a well known radio tune from Iceland's national state radio (RÚV). It's a segment called Death announcements and burial services, and in that segment, following that well known tune, a heavy monotone female voice would list people that had recently died and announce when and where burial services would be held. I don't know if they still do these announcements on the radio but I remember them from my childhood in the 90s and 00s.

I've heard from Icelandic people before that Jónsi is generally quite hard to understand, which is why a lot of their songs still don't have full lyrics even after 20 years. Even recent songs like Óveður, native people don't seem to be able to figure out everything that he's saying.

Beautiful. Sigur Ros has always been a favorite of mine, one of the bands I can say truly helped me through difficult times, and to this day I still think Heima is the most beautiful musical documentary I've ever seen. I was always fascinated by Hopelandic, I think it's such a great idea to let the sound itself to carry all of the meaning in a song. Great video, and the quote from Shawshank is perfect.

As a singer/musician myself, this is something many of us who write our own music and lyrics do. I didn’t realize that it was a whole “thing”, nor the fact that it’s so common, but it is certainly a dependable way of structuring the vocal melodies and harmonies of a piece, as well as just figuring out exactly how the vocals are going to sit within the song (if that makes any sense lol).

I was listening to Takk... when I first saw the northern lights (svo hljótt and heysátan, agaetis byrjun afterwards). I will never forget that. Sigur Rós is more than music. It is pure emotion. I’m 16 and me and my dad found Sigur Ros together about 3 years ago and by now have gone to 2 of their concerts, one on my birthday, and they are just magical. I can only describe their beauty in hopelandic, as real words escape me. Their music reaches deep into my soul always and makes me feel in ways I didn’t know I could. My favorite track is ísjaki but I can’t truly choose 1 because it shifts depending on the day or my mood. This band is a staple to any that find it, as there is just nothing like their sound and I doubt there ever will be such raw and powerful emotion displayed in music ever again

At the most basic level...these sort of super well made video essays about something very specific...like a band...make me realize that the idiosyncratic strangeness that is my perception of reality...is in fact shared by others. I was honestly kinda vibing off the fact you not only love Sigur Ros as much as I do....but you love their music for very similar reasons to me. And it's just really cool to hear another human being express my own exact thoughts...but in their own words.

I first came across this band when I was hanging out with my dad in an old cd store at his hometown (Pelotas/Brazil). As I was looking for something to my liking, I came across this really strange specimen. Just a black album with a picture of what looked like an alien baby. I opened it up and took a look at the booklet, it had some stuff written in a language i couldn't understand or even read. I asked my father if he at least knew the "mascot" in the cover of the album, but he was just as clueless as I was. We tested the CD out but we couldn't really hear anything, so I decided to get another album for myself that day that seemed more to my liking "The Dream Sequencer", which ended up being my favorite album of all time btw. Anyhow, I decided to write down the name of this mysterious band and i was really excited to listen to them when i got home and... Damn, it was something truly special, I never heard anything like them in my life. I have enjoyed many songs by them ever since, but always trying to look for their meaning and sticking to a translation that sounded the most logical to me. Now i'll try to listen to them through this new perspective. Really cool video, thank you for sharing this info in such a concise piece of work

One of the most creative and musical bands of all time. Great to see a video about them in 2020. Olsen Olsen is one of my favorite pieces of music. Scratch that. Agaetis Byrjun is an amazing album

I had the pleasure to experience a live performance by them, either back in 2007 or 2008. They played at the Berkeley Greek Amphitheater, it's an outdoor venue and the whole experience was amazing. Especially during the encore, they played gobbledygook and it started raining and there was a huge drum line. It was a beautiful moment.

I went to the Rock and Roll museum in Keflavik when I visited Iceland. There's an exhibition where you can pop a "record" on and put on headphones and music plays while you watch videos and and read from a projector (so terribly described but anyone going to South West Iceland I would recommend this!). Hoppipolla played in the background of this presentation and I got literal shudders and genuinely cried a bit! Proof that it's not just about the lyrics, but music makes us feel something so unexpected and unexplainable

I'm really new to sigur rós I recently discovered it in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia in its 13th season finale, I always think about that whenever I hear it it does something truly beautiful to my soul every time I listen to it

I did not know that! I assumed I just didn't understand the lyrics, but I get it: they are so moving and filled with unspoken passion you couldn't possibly put the emotion into words. Remarkable band.

I first heard of Sigur Rós almost ten years ago, after watching a football video name "The Butterfly Effect MKB CC8 Winner by ElAlonso" (which I would definitely recommend to any real football fan :). The track playing during the video is Sæglópur. Of course, I don't know any Icelandic, but boy did I wish I knew at that moment. Ever since then I've been following this band, finding a sort of safe haven whenever I feel I need one. I never truly wanted to know what the lyrics meant, but when I read an English translation of Sæglópur I was pleased to learn that almost any interpretation of the song is valid. It's the emotion you feel during listening that counts and to me, that is something truly special about this band which keeps bringing me back and will keep bringing me back until the end. Beautiful video Elk :)

I bought the Untitled Album from Ameoba in Los Angeles and hasn't a clue what I had done. I thought it was unfinished work. After listening to the entire album. Enjoy each song a bit more from the last, eventually resetting. I believed they were singing in Icelandic, so how was I suppose to know. I would adlib my own words. Never knowing about, Hopelandic. They're a powerfully inspiring band.

I love the music of Sigur Ros because it invites you into the depths of your own emotions. Bono once said of Bjork's songwriting that it's easy to write a sad song when you are sad. Writing blissfully happy songs is so much harder, but Bjork does it effortlessly. Sigur Ros's whole catalog is an emotional spectrum journey and hearing them live is the equivalent of having all your cells in your body turn on all at once. I've been to 4 of their concerts and all were unforgettable. If they ever tour near you, just go!
