In this video you’re going to learn why your shop needs a high-quality vehicle power supply, like iSCAN’s PS-M2.
You may know that most vehicle manufacturers require a vehicle power supply for coding or programming, but did you know your shop should be using one for maintenance and diagnostics, or any time you have the ignition ON for more than a few seconds?
A vehicle power supply maintains a set voltage by adjusting amperage output, without experiencing voltage drops or spikes.
This voltage has to be free of AC ripple and be only clean DC power. Computers do not like AC current. Too much ripple or noise can introduce problems, especially when performing diagnostics or flash programming
Every manufacturer has specific power supply requirements. So voltage adjustability is paramount. For example, manufacturers such as BMW recommend having 14 volts at the DLC. Jaguar/Land Rover OE software programming, voltage must be between 13.0 and 13.9 volts at the DLC, no higher and no lower or programming will not commence. Voltage drop will occur in every power supply so it’s important to base the actual voltage that is being reported at the scan tool or DLC and not just the voltage that the power supply is set to. The most common BMW programming failures occur when voltage drops below 13 volts.
The moment the ignition is turned ON, the load on a vehicle’s electrical system can often exceed 50 amps. Without a stable vehicle power supply properly connected to the vehicle, you run the risk of damaging the battery, having incorrect scan tool data and in the cases of coding and programming, having failures that could result in the loss of a module. A failed module replacement could cost your shop up to thousands, easily prevented by using the right vehicle power supply.
Even if you don’t do any flash programming onsite, it should be standard practice to connect a suitable power supply on every vehicle you diagnose. There are some makes such as Porsche, that will not be able to communicate with all modules on a whole system scan if the engine is running and not in position 2, key ON, engine OFF.
