Good for you! But what if they aren’t ready to achieve each of those goals by the deadlines you’ve set? Your goals should be about allotting time to helping your kids. They will reach their own milestones in their own time. By deqdlining their milestones, you’re creating a scenario where, if they fall behind, they will feel pressured to catch up, and that pressure will hinder the learning process.

@@zakgreenberg1615 these timed goals are for myself. If they don’t reach them by the time, I will readjust my method and keep pushing. Of course they grow as they are ready. But I’m not using my own insecurities as an excuse to procrastinate or limit their abilities. They may also surpass these goals well before the time limit. The point is, I need to stop limiting them.

They may achieve much more than I hoped in this time limit too. I wasn’t throwing a gauntlet down saying they must reach these goals, or else. Far from it. They are ready and hungry to learn. I need to rise to the occasion. That’s all!

If you're interested in fantastic, free language courses check, Language Transfer. The courses are basically recordings of a teacher and a student. If you go through a course first by yourself WITHOUT looking at the transcript AND thinking about the questions yourself, you'll learn the language, too. You can then later check out the transcript and assume the role of the teacher and follow the transcript and have your kid assume the role of the student. Remember, though, that kids have their own interests and timeline. If they don't feel like it, it won't do much good to force them. But Language Transfer's method is very active and will likely engage their curiosity. You can find Complete Spanish and other courses on KZfaq.

We do the same for our children. We speak English and French, plus orher different local languages.

When did you start this? My son is 21 months old, so not quite 2 yet. He has trouble saying words and sounds but understands a lot. I want to be proactive with this stuff but haven’t because of his age, naturally. He’s at the age where I need to start implementing some of these strategies but I don’t want to expect more than is reasonable. I just know there’s a big difference between a toddler that’s 1y9m and 2y9m.

@@djkb125 oh yeah my son is turning 3 next month. And, he was showing signs of readiness i.e., good expressive and receptive language skills, the ability to focus and the desire to learn. With his older brother it was different, the focus wasn’t there and I didn’t push reading skills much at all. (I hadn’t discovered this channel yet.) When he was nearly 5, my mom who is a former teacher bribed him with lego sets until he could read basic stuff. He picked up the rest from video games 😅. He’s reading well above his grade level now. Maybe part of the reason my younger boy is so cooperative is that he sees his brother has to do some things also before he turns on the tv-read a book, do some math drills, exercise, etc. This is all to say, I think the main thing is to keep it fun for your kid and don’t worry about missing a window of time with learning-what might take them a year at 2 can take only a month at 4 or 5. If you are an attentive and loving parent, your child will do fine.

I just need to be patient and know we’ll work together when the time comes. I can start adding more Spanish at home now though!!

It's way too early. When a child can't say a sentence yet, it's no good trying to teach them to read. It's much better to have picture books and occasional sounds - a literacy rich environment where he's drawn to literature. It's too early to start systematic grapheme-phoneme teaching. The child should be at least ~3-4 years old before you start doing so. If you start too early, the kid may not be at a developmentally appropriate stage and it's simply impossible for them to learn the skill right then abd at worst may discourage the child from learning to read. Make books & letters visible in the environment so that he can get curious about them by himself. When you notice him engaging with letters or books or so by his own initiative, that's a cue that you can try systematically teaching basic decoding skills.
