If you feel like it's really hard to get promoted as a software engineer right now, you're not alone. It's always been hard to move up the ranks, but with the recent tech market, it's even harder. The good old of days of just staying at a company long enough and getting promoted are gone and now we have layoffs and PIP instead. Let's cover some tips to help you get promoted, using Gergely Orosz's article as inspiration.

I've learned the hard way, there's really no way to streamline a promotion, unless it's a fake promo because your manager likes you or something, but that won't help when you switch jobs and get re-leveled correctly) It just comes from real-world experience. You can do more to expedite the process by like 10%, but it's usually not worth the stress and you have to prove consistent performance anyway. If you can't get promoted with putting in 80-100%, you'll burn out in the new role. But I guarantee you no online course or video or leetcode or book will EVER help you get promoted in a real serious job. Every junior engineer can learn that too, but it still takes 5 years to get the required industry experience.

The pay difference between a SWE II and a SWE III in my company goes from like 170k -> 195k, so after tax it's what maybe another 15,000 dollars in after taxes? In my opinion, it's not worth putting in the extra effort to try to get promoted just for the prestige and a bit more money. All these steps probably require 2x the effort instead of just maintaining your current position. Not worth it - spend your extra time getting fit, exploring your passions, travel etc.

Once your life and self worth revolves around your job you'll start putting in the time 💲

@@sjc5411 You should never let your self-worth revolve around your job. A lot of type A people make it so, but they need to rethink their priorities. Obviously make enough to survive and live comfortably, but after that espeically for us SWE's we need to focus on other stuff.

While supporting and mentoring juniors and being a go-to person can contribute to advancement at lower levels, it becomes crucial at a certain stage to prioritize safeguarding one's bandwidth. This entails setting limits on assisting others to ensure that it doesn't impede progress on "strategy" level tasks and meeting deadlines.

You can become a Staff / Principal Engineer after 10 years of Experience. Just switch the company at the right time with an upper role.

How can I be a software developer? Now I have no idea of this field. Is it a good idea to go to university to learn engineering? Is there any other way to be an engineer without any involving degrees?
@ramen9561

You can go to a boot camp but it is going to be a up hill battle. University is your best bet, but unless you already have your AA it's going to be a significant time and money investment. Furthermore, the field is becoming more competitive so your going to constantly going to be playing catch up. In my opinion it's easier to just go to trade school and I would only consider a career in software if you have a strong aptitude or passion for coding.
