I served on a ballistic missile sub and your description of the worst thing about it is correct. In most situations, there is a way to leave where you work. Even in other parts of the military there are ways you can quit. In the Army, you can say, "I quit." And they'll say, "whatever, your going to the stockade, enjoy jail." But at least its a different place. And even in the Navy on a surface ship, they'll be like, "Enjoy the brig, quitter," and then a few days later a helicopter or ship will come by and pick you up and take you to navy jail on land. But if you try to quit on a sub, there is no brig and no place to go, so you just have to stay in your rack. You might as well go back to work. There was a chief who had a heart attack on my boat, and he had to wait a week before we could get him evacuated to a hospital. There were a few other medical emergencies that just ended up alright, thankfully, before we could get the people off the boat, or didn't need help anymore.

What I love so much about Mark is his tone and delivery style. It's so perfect for talking about these kinds of films. Mark, your episodes are so rewatchable! This episode will be remembered as a classic, right next to The Pit and The Neverending story 2 (this one I've watched a dozen times over the years.) Never stop, Mark. I completely agree with Mark’s reasoning for not wanting to go in a submarine. I’d make the same argument about going into space and being on a ship out in the ocean thousands of miles from land. He puts it perfectly. I don’t want to be anywhere that I can’t easily get off/out of. Just the thought makes me vaguely nauseous. Unrelated; I too have pages of intricate doodles from meetings I’ve attended.

Omg that's hilarious, the torpedoes turning around, because the exact thing happened to my dad when he was in the navy. He was the "underwater weapons specialist" so he was below deck actually launching these experimental, dummy torpedoes. Apparently they launched, got about half a km away and did a u turn, banging into the side of the ship lol. My dad was oblivious to the situation, so he launched it, waited, and about 30 seconds later there was a huge thud on the hull almost right next to him. No damage or anything...but they scrapped that design lol.

The part about being on a sub and not being able to leave made me remember childhood road trips where I'd feel travel sick, overly warm (no a/c in them days) or needed the bathroom but my parents would not stop the car and did not like the windows being open. I feel that just gave me a fear of confined spaces. I was once stuck on a flight that would not take off due to bad weather and I was going seriously stir crazy. If you're not going to take off, let us off the plane. Eight hours we sat on that plane on the runway, until finally the flight was canceled. I've hardly flown since that experience - I drive everywhere, even if it takes multiple days (since I can stop when I want, and I have a/c.) Submarine movies always bring all this up in my head. But I still wouldn't volunteer to be a fish cyborg.

Undersea sci-fi/horror has been a favorite of mine since my early childhood. I won't list my favorites, since it would be too extensive.Being 60 years, I'm an "old timer". I am a registered scuba diver, though. Probably because of films like that, as well as VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA and SEA HUNT. When I was a kid in the '60's, there were ads in comic books to send-away for a two-man submarine for $3.50. Plus shipping & handling. Oh, what adventures I would go on! Image the disappointment a 6 year old boy felt when he got a cardboard box with a submarine printed on the side.

Last time someone tried to build an underwater city it devolved into a cesspool of cannibalistic drug addicts and lethal scuba suit wearing baby sitters.

The funny part about the beginning is that the torpedo is actually working as intended. It ignores the decoys and homes right in on the real ship. That's what you want a homing torpedo to do.

Don't knock being a water cyborg until you've tried it. Good ole work, fight, stop. Life doesn't get any better.

I wish they'd done a sequel where the Richard Jaeckel shark movie character and Jellyvish-man from Sting of Death showed up to deal with these water cyborgs. Maybe with a few other grade Z movie characters in a poor man's Avengers ripoff? Maybe Manos or the Plan 9 aliens could've brought them back to life? I'd pay to see that...heck, even just to read the fanfic on it.

Whenever anyone draws a gun on me, I also run really really fast at them and they suddenly holster their weapons. 80% of the time, it works everytime.
