Why You Should NOT Buy an Old Used BMW
Should you buy a used BMW? What about an older BMW? Simply put, there are a lot of reasons that I'm going to share with you today that explain why you'd like to avoid buying a used BMW. In fact, I have 13 reasons you should not buy a BMW, but a few reasons you should.
There are a couple of special BMW cars out there on the market today that are a bit older but really bring something that you can't find in the new #BMW lineup. I'll explain those few situations where an old BMW is #worth it! You'll pay in terms of #reliability, but they'll bring you that true ultimate driving experience.

I bought a 2012 328i for 3k, spent about 6k in repairs paint job, tires, seals, gaskets, headlights and so on, ever since then the car runs perfect. I been enjoying this thing for 4 years just replacing oil, filters and spark plugs. It comes out to about $3200 not including insurance a year in 4.5 years of ownership including the purchase price. On the other hand my new car costs me on average $11,000 a year including maintenance and car payments! So do the math and see what works for you. I personally prefer to buy two used cars, maintain them and if one breaks, I drive the other one and fix it myself as needed.

I think the whole way of thinking has to change, Basically once about every 10 years or 100K miles, all modern BMWs require a major overhaul like an aircraft. All the gaskets, seals, water pump, and many other parts should be replaced/upgraded all in one go. BMW will never tell you to do that as they want the car junked. Unfortunately unlike aircraft used prices do not properly reflect what work has been done. Attempting to only fix the problem at hand at the time is not the way to go as everything is engineered to fail at about the same time.

I only did regular service maintenance on it. Car looked almost brand new still in 2016. It had the 6cyl inline engine and auto transmission. I kind of regret now trading it in. Now I’m in my 20’s & decided to get rid of my mustang & recently got a newer 3 series with low miles, only one owner previous who bought it as a certified BMW that was only serviced at the dealer. Thankfully it’s still under factory warranty & I got extended warranty & gap. BMW’s can last you if you properly take care of them & stay up on the maintenance. I’m starting to change the parts now to make sure she’s good for many years to come. Preventive maintenance I like doing. They’re excellent cars, they just require more attentive care. Personally I always recommend others to go for the older models of BMW. Less technology crap in them and not so much plastic parts compared to the newer models these days.

@@trustyoungpierre9959 I had a coupe. Not a convertible just for reference. The coolant expansion tanks are known to crack and need replacement. Also sometimes the radiator also but you can get an aftermarket one for less than 100.00. Pulley set. Coil springs and shocks/stuts after 100k miles. That's about it for the most common things that need replacement after 100k if not done already. There is one other thing to check and that's to look for any cracks in the rear subframe. Look it up and you'll see what I mean. Usually it's only happening on cars that have been driven hard alot like some M3s but can happen on any of them when pushed too hard for too long. Oh and expect the pillars inside from front to back to have the cloth material falling off. They are notorious for that. I did have to do spark plugs and a valve cover gasket also. Look for oil leaks. Oil pan also as it's not a cheap or quick job to replace as the front subframe must be dropped if I recall correctly. The M54 engines are reliable when treated properly but are known to use some oil too. May have to top it off occasionally. The M52 and M52TU didn't need as much topping off if any. Hopefully I havent scared you away from them too badly. I love a good e46. Any more questions feel free to ask.

To me it's largely about the specific car you put eyes on buying. From my experience a luxury car that looks good / has been taken care of i.e. has been to the dealer for regular service & especially warranty repairs, is often GTG for a long time in the out-years. Service history is key. Yeah it's a gamble, but more often than not I've come out ahead on that gamble vs the following: What is more of a certainly vs a gamble is buying one of these cars new. You WILL pay a king's ransom on taxes/registration & you WILL lose your @ss on depreciation. Plus you likely will be spending a fair amount of time & money at the dealer for routine service & warranty work. The other plus to buying one of these type cars used is if you don't end up liking it you can often get out from under it for very close to what you paid for it. This is even more true in cases where you purchased your ride tax-free via a private party buy. I love it when people buy or lease new though as if not for new buyers & leases I wouldn't be able to get fine automobiles for a fraction of the cost.

I own a 2002 BMW 325i. I got the car at 80,000. I didn’t have to start real maintenance until 5 years after buying the car. The trick is to find a great mechanic and always buy OEM parts. Bad mechanics or mechanics that aren’t knowledgeable about BMWs will cause you to spend more. BMWs can last 300,000 miles. My car has overheated before and it is still rolling 6 years later. BMWs are great cars but you will pay more on repairs and labor compared to most brands. Buy your own parts!!! Don’t let some of these mechanics put cheap parts on your BMW!!

@@MrRepsMrReps Yeah what most people don't seem to understand is the fact that when someone visits Scotty instead of the dealership it already suggests that he or she purchased a shoddy car in the first place and this can apply to any brand, even his endorsed Toyota brand of which I have seen a handful of videos of his also saying that Toyota's are a collection of cheap ass plastic. What's also worth mentioning is the fact that here in Europe you will rarely if ever see a German car next to the road which is not at least 10 or even 15 years old but you will always see cars from Asian manufacturers such as Kia, Toyota, Daihatsu, Nissan and Hyundai and I've seen quite a few which were definitely from the last 2 or 3 generations so I am not so sure where this perception of Toyota being a topnotch brand comes from.

💯 true. In the summer of 2018 i bought a used 2013 X5 with 94k miles.. my first ever SUV and it “looked” amazing and drove like a champ. The interior fit and finish was great. Unfortunately i didn’t have a pre-purchase inspection done. Within 8 LONG months i sunk nearly $2,500 into it for repairs (and that was with a extended bumper to bumper warranty). Leaking rear differential, frozen door lock (broke lock actuator) and front end suspension replacement. I was spiraling down a bad path... One day i was watching Scotty Kilmer about how BMW’s are empty $ pits especially over 50k miles and about 5 years old and BOOM, i sent him a message and he said “buy the LEXUS, you already know what a piece of crap the BMW is”. I couldn’t sell it privately and wound up trading it in in April 2019 for my one owner 2013 ES350 with only 30,009 miles on it ! Lexus (Toyota) are the most reliable and dependable cars/trucks in the world. It now has 41,500 miles and Ive done 2 synthetic oil changes and thats it ! Best car I’ve ever owned and this one is #20

Thanks for sharing and yes Lexus and reliability are synonymous so that was a great choice and you will likely have far fewer problems but with that said I have a 2009 E70 X5 diesel and I love it. I have owned it for about 8 years and it’s a champ. When things bresk, and there have been a few, they do get pricey. I still value the driving experience over all else. Reliability is part of "better quality". I will not buy any of these so called premium brands BMW, Audi, Merc. These brands ares now outright thieves and criminals. Why should they give me cheaper parts in my car if I have already paid twice as much for the car when it's new?!

I am still driving a naturally aspirated 2009 328i xdrive coupe, the only work I have put into it is: replace Vanos - valve cover gasket - serpentine belt - and bushings, all work done by an independent shop seasoned ex-BMW tech.... Wait for it.... wait for it.... 380000km and it is still working and handling great, I actually very recently drove it from Alberta to Ontario. That being said, I am now looking at the M2 Competition (not sure of getting new or couple yrs old) won’t be my daily... I have done a fair amount of research on the M2 Competition with very few negative reviews. What do you think of the M2?

I can't really agree with this. Doing your research and finding a used one that's had the repairs done and common problems fixed isn't a bad thing. With a new one you are still losing a lot of money with depreciation and you have to pay for full insurance if you haven't paid it off yet. I think a proper used one is a much better choice, if a person buys a bad one due to no research then it's somewhat their fault too.

They started fading around ‘98... you could see it coming. Drove them for years, stopped in ‘98. One family owns every dealership across the center of my state and BMW will not allow a second dealership in the area... Horrible dealership experience, lying service managers, rarely had the lease contracted loaner car, didn’t want to tow the car from my driveway when it wouldn’t start. Not a dead battery, it was electronic problems. Because it “wasn’t on the road”. So I pushed it into the street and called them back. I laugh at idiots driving a car living of its glory years from 40 years ago.

My parents bought a brand new beuatiful red 325i convertible back in 1988. It was driven daily and besides regular maintenance it was absolutely trouble free about 15 years. It was sold to some friends who drove it for about another 5 years before having to do some major maintenance but after that it ran great right up to 2015 when they finally sold it to a BMW enthusiast who said he couldn't believe how well the car looked and drove being it was 25+ years old. Definitely some wear and tear but everything worked. In my opinion the 80s and 90s is when BMW cared about reliability.

I own a 2009 bmw. The first 10 years were awesome. It was under warranty and only minor repairs. Now at year 13, I’m trying to get out of it. It runs well but it’s needing more and more repairs which means inconvenience and time (which bothers me more than the money). It’s a very nice driving experience but I wouldn’t get it unless you 1. Are savvy about mechanics so that you have an understanding of what’s happening to your car and not feel like every mechanic may be jerking you around 2. Have a trust worthy mechanic in your life-someone that’s not the dealer but that can work on beemers 3. There’s a second method of transportation in your household for the times it’ll need service for some reason or other when it’s older (about 3 times a year) Then you’ll be able to handle the repairs and in between enjoy a smooth car, that handles well, and with power. But if you do not possess the three above, like me, it’s not worth the trouble, buy a new one.

@@ahyup214 dude when my car would downshift from second to first gear it felt as if someone hit u from the back the car would lurch so hard especially when the transmission was warmed up. thing is tho i lost my manual mode a while ago and even rewired some wires that commonly go out on the gear shifter still didn’t bring my manual mode back. ordered a whole new gear shifter with new wires and everything still didn’t bring back my manual mode. if u have any suggestions on what it might be bro let me know this shit has me stressed out lol

Agreed. I had a " newer" 2015 335i, N55. Initially, with warranty. Loved it. Then, coolant line issues and I got rid of it. Prior to that, an M3, 2013. Again, various leaks. Point well made and people should heed your advice.

hey did you finance the 335i ? what would happen if you financed and the care became too problematic how would you go about this ?

@@jshifty9618 Yes, I did finance it. However, when I purchased it, it still had factory warranty left on it. Based upon my mileage, there was about a year's left. When the warranty wore out I got nervous and was a decisive factor in trading it in, after one of the BMW's characteristic water leaks happened. A coolant hose burst and was easily replaceable. I enjoyed the car but became nervous once little things started occurring

@@thomashelm6931 i really appreciate you taking the time and responding, i’m looking to buy one i see maintenance is issues but if i can do it myself would you still recommend getting it ? ofc if it’s out my range i’ll go to a mechanic. also this is after asking the dealership the main question like when was the last time the timing chain and high pressure fuel pumps changed (supposedly the n63 worst engine problems.)

@@jshifty9618 it's very subjective depending on your mechanical aptitudes. Mark, our host on exotic car play place, had a 335i with the n54 engine. It was a real headache in the benefits where nothing compared to the weekly issue of something going wrong. And he fixed the problems himself. But he ended up selling the car. As always, a thorough pre-purchase inspection, But I would look at any BMW with the potential of issues down the road.

@@thomashelm6931 very understandable and again i appreciate your wise words. i’ve seen ways on youtube to help prevent som problem with a couple mods to help keep the engine a bit cooler than usual, i’m in maryland so it doesn’t really get that hot mostly rain. they also have a 14,15 model of the same car so if the 11 isn’t up to date i’ll more then likely get a newer model or a completely different model which i don’t want to have to do unless it’s better for me down the line.

I just bought a 2021 Z4 with 11,000 miles at 35% off sticker price-perfect condition-from a dealer. I purchased a 5-yr/60,000 extended warranty that covers everything (minus typical wear items like tires/brakes/maintenance) and includes all labor for $3,000. This sounds like a lot but after watching this video, that could be 1 or 2 repairs. Now, I am very happy that I purchased it. I also plan on using an independent shop for wear items and routine maintenance to save some $$ there.

I believe Mark has provided good advice but I have purchased a used 1991 BMW 525i with 130,000 plus miles and I bought it back in 2002 and I still have the car with over 235,000 miles. I bought a 1994 BMW 530I with 136,000 plus miles on it and 1999 BMW 740IL with 119,000 plus miles on it and I would drive them every day and racked up around 725,000 miles total on three BMW's. If I can share the advice I would say that Mark is providing good advice but I also believe that if you do your research on your vehicle and you stay ahead of the game but take care of the problems before they happen and follow maintenance before recommendation then you can enjoy your vehicle for a long time. What I plan to do is buy another vehicle or use it for daily driving and use my 7 series just for the weekend so that way my cars will last a lot longer than expected. I am a true fan and a very obsessed BMW fan. If you do your research on the car of your choice and you do preventative maintenance the car will last a lot longer. Also, going to junkyards and learning to save money from there or buy good parts from places that will save you money by shopping around. Don't hold back on your dreams!

I own a 2010 e90 320d in manual. I am the second owner. The car has 320 000km / 198 800 miles on it. I have had zero issues. Zero! No mechanical issues at all. So far I've replaced one angel eye and serviced it as BMW recommends. Thats it. Still pulls strong and ridiculously fuel efficient. 600 miles + on a tank.
