Many pet owners hesitate to go through with the routine procedure:
1:38 Will my cat gain weight if spayed/neutered?
2:20 What are the health risks of NOT spaying/neutering?
2:34 Isn't the surgery too invasive?
2:40 But I want my cat to have just one litter. Is that OK?
2:41 But I want my kids to see the miracle of birth. Is that OK?
More on these statistics:
* 6-8 million animals are booked into shelters yearly
* 70,000 cats and dogs are born daily
* 3-4 million adoptable cats and dogs are euthanized yearly.
* In the US, 1 healthy adoptable cat and dog is euthanized every 11 seconds
- Source: The Humane Society of The United States
* 3-4 million animals are adopted yearly
- Source: www.animalsheltering.org
* It costs over 1 billion dollars of taxpayers money to round up, house, euthanize and dispose of homeless animals yearly (MANY other sites state it is about 2 billion)

One thing that might be good to mention to people who want to let their kids see a live birth or want to have one litter is that they can look into fostering a pregnant cat through a shelter or a rescue. The experience is great, you won't be adding to the population, and you're giving the family a safe place to be when they might be homeless otherwise.

I was really on the fence about spaying my kitten. A friend of mine found her as a stray and we adopted her. It was love at first sight. Never have i had such a loving, cuddly kitten before. We found out that she is a russain blue mix, she's super intelligent, compassionate, and mischievous. So much so that I was flirting with the idea of, "well, if we just let her have one litter." Then I watched this video. It helped me make the decision that was best for her, not me. She was spayed one month ago, is healing great, and I know I made the right decision. She is my fur baby. She is enough for me. I'm so blessed to have her, no matter how bad a day at work i have, she makes me feel better. Thank you Jackson for helping me make the right decision. Her name is Kozmo by the way. She's the best.

Good on you. I always tell myself and others: "There will only EVER be ONE of this animal. Their offspring is not them and will never be them." Our pets are one of a kind and it is our duty as animal lovers to form these relationships with the animals who are already here and need us. It hurts the most when they pass away, but I think they live shorter lives so we can adopt more of them. It's sad and I hate the thought that there's only one of my boy, but that makes it all the more special right?

Unless you plan to keep all 5 kittens/puppies... don't let your pets get pregnant. So many people trying to pawn off kittens and puppies and so few people in a situation where they can adopt one. Its a huge thing to adopt a pet, and crazy to assume you can find 5+ people who are looking to get one.
@triplemania5550

Even if you could get 5+ people who are looking to get one, and get them to make a deposit to ensure they're serious, Elisa Kapp's idea above is still far superior: If you (or your children) want to see the live birth or have a litter: Foster a pregnant cat from a shelter or rescue.

I'm with you 200% on this one. Having spent the last 15 years doing TNR and rescue of orphan litters from high kill shelters (who most of the time don't survive) I can honestly say that if each human would spay or neuterjust one cat whether you own it or its a stray, hundreds of lives would be spared a harsh ending.

you're not sparing a single life, that's not how it works, when you castrate a living thing that kills off it's bloodline, the only difference is that when you physically crush the skull of a dozen babies you are honest with yourself and what you are doing But I guess you're more into inflicting genetal mutilation and the lifelong trauma that comes with it🙃

I had too cats, both female, and spayed them both. The first one was rescued off the streets and the vet thought she was pregnant because her womb was highly dilated...turns out she wasn't, someone had given her the pill (!) and had she not been spayed she would have died. So whatever you do, this may seem obvious but you never know, DO NOT GIVE HUMAN CONTRACEPTIVES TO CATS.

Maybe they couldn't afford to get her spayed, or didn't know of any places that'd do it for free. But common sense alone should have clued them in that giving any kind of human medication to a cat must be done with a vet's prescription if only because of the dosage. A cat is so much smaller than a human that a pill that is perfectly safe for a human to consume can easily kill a cat.

Our cat was already fixed when we got him, so that was great. We also didn't shop for a cat, but adopted him from one of dad's friends from work's mother, who unfortunately wasn't allowed to take the cat with her into a retirement home, and dad's work friend already had multiple cats, and since our cat was so used to being the only cat in the house, it didn't work out for them to keep the cat, so we got him.

My ex took him when we broke up, however I was able to trade something of value to her to get him back. He is unneutered and 10 months old. He plays fetch and is harness trained for walks. He does not spray and I do not believe he will start. He has only gone to toilet elsewhere (in the shower) one time I myself was negilgent in cleaning his litter boxes. I do not want to neuter him, I feel like his being is purfect the way it is. I see so much stuff pro neutering but I honestly want to believe I am doing the right thing by keeping him as nature intended. I also believe it would be selfish to neuter in regards to removing part of him to ensure he lives longer. If the cats had a voice like Jackson has said in regards to wearing clothers etc, how would they feel about having their body changed? What opinion would they voice then? or are we only allowed to listen when its in regards to dressing them up?. . .

Romina Gad, there are obviously times when those rules don't apply, but really, if you're very poor, getting s pet will usually be a bad idea. Take it from someone who worked in an animal clinic; no one should ever have to make the choice between eating in the next month and paying for a lifesaving surgery or medicine for their cat.

I think as soon as you have a cat it’s good to find a place to get them fixed. I had one male and one female and I waited until my male was about 5 months old to start looking. I don’t know if it was just my area or Covid messing with things or what, but so many vets were booked up for months in advance or they were crazy expensive. Some won’t do it until your pet is a year old which is ridiculous. I said our male was a year old and got him fixed. He was actually just short of a year by then and he made 4 kittens in the meantime! Now I have six cats. Don’t wait.

What iritates me the most is when a man won't get his dog or cat neutered because "It takes away his man hood." No it fucking doesn't not have semen doesn't make your animal less worthy of anything, and the same goes for men that wont get a vasectomy if needed. Infact a vasectomy on a human male doesn't even alter your hormones like a neuter does on a cat. And guess what, just because you can't shoot in and get out a baby doesn't make you less worthy or less of a man *It can actually make you more responsible

One semen is still there, please read up on biology, What's missing is the normal levels of testosterone. Cats and dogs still have semen, they don't have "sperm!". Vasectomies on dogs would work better, removing "man hood" is taking away anything that pertains to genitalia. Much like how a woman can get her tubes tied. Vasectomies can and are successfully reversed. Castrations can not be.

Sammie Watson My neighbor took it upon his own experience with cats to have it done. He was a friend of the vets. Bottom line, ask your vet. In our neighborhood we have a lot of ferrel cats. Some pet lovers trap them, take them to the vets to be spayed or neutered, pay for it, and then let them go in the same place that they found them. They can be I.D.ed because the vet snips the tip of one ear.[also they get rabies shots]

2 months ago, my wife and I adopted 3 3 month old siblings. A boy and 2 girls. We named them Mochi, Mocha and Molly. Yesterday we sent them to the vet to get them spayed and neutered. Molly just didnt wake up after the surgery. My wife and I are gutted and devastated over the loss. My wife cries whenever she thinks of Molly or see her favorite toy. We missed her dearly as she is the closest to us. Honestly, we blame ourselves for her death. All we wanted was to give them the best chamce they could get in life but now we are just traumatized.

While I feel very much for your loss, such circumstances are very rare. The odds are roughly one in a million. You made the right choice for their health and happiness. I know the odds because I have also won the heartbreak lottery. It was a very minor and routine surgical procedure, but unfortunately necessary. She had gotten through being spayed years before no problem. Her bloodwork was fine and had been rechecked just before the procedure. She had one of the best veterinarians on the continent. Nothing should have gone out of the ordinary. Unfortunately I lost my soul mate. Nothing could have changed it or prevented it. That didn't prevent me from making the correct choice to have my latest rescue baby spayed. I hope when your family has some time to grieve and heal you will understand you made the only choice you could. An emergency spay later for her over cancer or pyometra would have been a far greater risk.

If you doubt the value of spay and neuter, go volunteer or work at your local shelter. It will change your outlook I'm sure. Many people want to have no kill shelters but don't understand that in order for that to happen pet owners have to act responsibly. Spaying or neutering their pets, as well as making a true lifetime commitment are the best ways to start.

I worked in a shelter who did 1dollar fixing. We did it because we live in a low income area that a lot of people come to to dump off animals. Getting your animal spayed or neutered is going to give them a better quality of life. The other day I found a cat he'd been abandoned he had mats all in his fur and he still has his testicles I had to take him to the vet because he had a horrible of a respiratory infection and parasites in his tummy. After the vet and I talked about care for him and also their stuff I asked when they had another spay and neuter session at the clinic because I'm going to get them fixed the thing was we just had to wait cuz you know parasites and upper respiratory infection.

The surgery was on very healthy cbc and they all were passed out when they released em, they all woke up except one who ended up DEAD by the end of the day. Don't fly into spay ... if in doubt don't. That day the spay was canceled because she had a flu but the vet did not wanted to take a risk because her defenses are low because of AIDS. I think by now she is 1 year old and she looks perfectly healthy, but I have not spay her because of my fear that she would not heal properly or that she could even died while they spay her. If I didn’t get him neutered then there could be a possibility that he would be able to run outside and go roaming looking for a female and getting into fights with other male cats and getting infected cuts/bites. Also he could roam so far that he would never come back. Update: The surgery went smooth and he’s recovering well. Not even an hour in the door and he’s already running about and wanting to play 🤣

I have a friend who's indoor cat is not neutered and omg this cat can be satan, your petting and its purring one second scratching and hissing the next. I spent the night there and I used the bathroom in the middle of the night and she was waiting in the hallway and I was kinda cornered. I escaped down the stairs and she then sat on the stairs just staring at me. I didn't have my phone and my friend was asleep, I was stuck for like 30 minutes

I rescued my cat way before i was financially ready for a cat because if i didnt offer to take him in he would have either been forced to be put down or sent to a shelter and most likely put down f9r being labeled a agressive cat. ... i was his last straw and i got him with cronic kindney disease i did not plan on those health expenses. I fully understand the importance of spaying and neutering and have always done so with my cats. I recently got an older girl cat. I was told she was spayed but she's gone into heat. The vet couldn't see any scars so we figure she hasn't been. The vet noticed a heart murmur and did an EKG and said because of her age and the heart thing there could be a chance something could go wrong during surgery. I've been going to this vet for over 20 years so trust him. So I decided not to take the chance of losing her and live with a horny cat a few weeks out of the year. Is there anything I can do to calm her down and keep her quiet? Because a cat in heat is a loud one.

@@Titronnica I bet if humans had 4+ kids each pregnancy which are 2 months, tubal ligations and vasectomies would be much more common. People who are against spaying and neutering are looking at the situation through from the perspective of a human, many only have maybe 3 kids in their lifetime, while a cat may have exceeded that after their first pregnancy. Animals who give birth to large litters don't care as much about the outcome of each of the babies, and so many die young. We humans are trying to save as many animals as we can and so to do that, we need to limit the number of animals that are born.

I started off with one kitty, she was dropped off at around 8-10 months old at the dumpster behind my work. I brought her home and washed and fed her. Got her a bed and defleed, I've always meant to get her spayed but I'm low income and when I went they said she needed her shots first. Which cost around $100. So I had to wait a few more checks...then I brought her again and she'd been acting weird and they prescribed me more medicine..$50 for the visit/check up an $40 for the meds...by the next time I took her they said she was pregnant. So we had to wait...and after the 4 beautiful babies were born we had to buy more food, eye cleaning wipes, the basics. 2 of the kittens were stolen along with their cat house we had on our porch we're down to 3. The mama and 2 babies...plus the 2 stays dropped off on our block. Mama is pregnant again unfortunately..but our 6 month boy is getting neutered Friday with his shots...$100. we'll have to wait for our shadow kitty to get spayed and then the mama when we can. It's really hard finding a place that allows cats...let alone 3. So far the few we found have a $100-$500 pet fee PER PET. But we're doing our best for our babies and refuse to move anywhere without them.

I had my cat neutered 2 weeks ago, and it was one of the worst mistakes of my (and his) life. He got so stressed by the operation and recovery (wearing the cone etc) that his urethra was having spasms and constricting, and he quit urinating. At first I thought he was still urinating, but what was happening was that his bladder was so full that urine was leaking out. His bladder is now so distended that it might never function normally. He’s been in and out of the cat hospital for the past week, having to go on catheters etc. It’s still unclear how this is going to resolve. He might need PU operation, and I might have to manually express his bladder for the rest of his life. He’s 3 years old, so that could be a long time. He was fine for the past 3 years, no bladder/urethra problems at all. Then he got neutered and all hell broke loose. Male neutered cats are the most likely to develop blocked urethras-that’s a risk to take seriously. I’ve spent $9000 and counting trying to treat this, and my baby still might end up euthanized 😢

I don't want her bred, I don't want to put her outside because it's just too dangerous, mating or otherwise, and I don't want to have to find homes for a litter because who knows how long that would take. It took only probably an hour or two for my friend to find homes for my kitty and her littermates--my kitty chose me and the other five became barn cats--and that's probably some sort of record. I notice you never answered the question of if this surgery is to invasive... That's the number one reason I never got my cat spayed and it is possible to keep them from getting pregnant. I had a stray intact male cat that used to pee outside my front door and I KNOW he did it because I sat there and watched him one time (I had suspected it for a long time before then) and my intact female would often lay down in front of that door (and if I can look down that crack between the bottom of the door and the carpet and see light, then I know she can definitely smell that outside tom), especially when she was in heat. But never ONCE did she decide to run out that door and I never had any problems with her using the litterbox. I know that these are possibilities for intact cats, but I'm tired of people using these scare tactics and and blanket assumptions to try and force people to get this procedure done. Giving reasons like, there are not going to be any bla bla bla in the future, is just reasons that does not only contribute to the problem, but just reasons that comes from our selfish and that so called logic thinking. Not just in the USA, countries around the world experience this kind of problem too. So March-April of 2015, a white and black female cat, feral, appeared around my house. After a few weeks of leaving out food for her and our other (spayed)female, she was domesticated. Early summer after school, we found out she was expecting. She had five kittens June 22. I cannot begin to say the exhaustion I went through to keep them all alive through a blistering hot summer while protecting them from a neighborhood of dogs and predators. I eventually got them inside(I'm under 18, so I had to get permission) and I had to get help from an older friend to help me get them through their first three months. Two have found homes which I'm proud to say they have. I still have three kittens and only last month did I get the only boy of the three neutered. I was $8 short and I felt like I won the lottery when I got that final bit needed to neuter him. Momma is still not spayed, nor are her two girls. I think Momma(her name is Zenna) has mated again. Anywhere I can go to fix her and babies?

+doggirl007 There are usually spay/neuter clinics around somewhere, with reduced fees--you can ask at a pet store like petsmart or countrymax, or your vet. But bear in mind these clinics are in and out, so will not keep the pet overnight. If there are any complications, you will end up having to take the pet to a vet anyway. In the case of the young ones, there may or may not be complications (mine was four months old and already starting her first heat, which is more complicated for the surgery). For a pregnant cat, if you are looking to have the babies aborted, that would be a complicated spay and have to be done at a vet's office, where they could keep the cat as long as necessary to make sure she is ok. I hope this info helps. I know vets cost the most for fixing, but shop around and see if any will help you out bc you are helping a feral. Also, if the mama will remain feral, look into spay/neuter-release programs in your area, where she can be spayed and released back to life outdoors. I believe those are free, but ask around, because I am not sure. Hope I am helping, and thank you for caring for these kitties.

What about TNR? In Australia they cost around $200 to spay one. I have like 3 females in my apartment building that roam and about 6+ males

My mother is getting a cat next month. She won't have It that spaying the cat will be better for her. She coincidently said that it's too invasive, but she also said it's, cruel, it's a seasonal thing and it only happens a few times a year blablabla... we also have a smaller older dog, my worry is she could potentially become aggressive toward him. I just wish i could persuade my mother to see that spaying the cat will make her happier in the long run.

Here is my question. My cat came to me at 12 with late stage 3 cronic kindney disease. With care and propper diet he has gotten a bit better to early stage 3, or so my vet tells me at least. When i first got him i was planning on neutering him since i know that this would be better health wise and behaiour wise for a healthy home cat. But i worry since his kidneys dont deal as well with removing things from his blood stream that neutering him with his health condition is actually i higher risk than just keeping him intact. I have had him 2 years now and never had a issue with his behaviour, though he came to me for bad behaviour. This would be purely for health reasons that onwould or would not neuter him.

help me understand how ending a bloodline is "good for health" a neutered cat isn't healthy it's a walking roadkill who is going to die alone without reproducing, we living things have so many health problems specifically because the way evolution dealt with them was simply "have them regenerate from scratch every few years" and sweep it under the rug A castrated cat will not have life continue from it, it will just have it's health condition worsen and worsen, grow more and more in pain as every single system in his body fails one by one until it dies, the difference being that unlike all other living things he won't pass the torch of carrying his billion year old surviving genes to the next generation, because there is no generation, only death and extinction for that specific individual and his genome

Is it ok to wait till they have become 1 year old? My thinking is that they should go through puberty. Dogs who get snipped before puberty they don't grow hair or fur in a certain area and i was thinking thats bad for cold climates

My concern with spaying my baby is the healing process. I work full-time. Should I take a few days off? And she has an older friend.

As long as she has any medication on time she will be fine. You may want to set up a smaller recovery space for her if you think the other cat will try to play rough with her while you are gone. Just talk to your veterinarian about your concerns. That's what they're there for.

Jackson should I buy a 2 year old cat that's not neutered? I already own a neutered cat that 2 year old. Will the new unneutered cat cause problems?? Any help would be appreciated...😺

I am currently caring for 2 kittens post spay surgery. I have always had male cats, these 2 kittens are female. Their recovery time is longer. I hope that in the near future there will be other less invasive options for spaying female cats.

i just recently got my very first kitten and yea i dont want to get her spayed cause she my baby i found her in someone garage she was a stray she got her shot she so perfect and playful and it take all of your tip like play with her let her relax and than feed her i feed her three time a day and she just been more firendly i most likely would get her spayed since it seemed the best option and if i wanted her to have baby its best to adopt since their is so many kitten without a home
To bathe or not to bathe your cat - that is the question!
