Is Luxor safe to visit? What are the hotels like? What can I visit?
In this video, I will give you my guide to why you should visit Luxor!
Luxor is a city on the east bank of the Nile River in southern Egypt. It's on the site of ancient Thebes, the pharaohs’ capital at the height of their power, during the 16th-11th centuries B.C. Today's city surrounds 2 huge, surviving ancient monuments: graceful Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple, a mile north. The royal tombs of the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens are on the river’s west bank.

£1k for Luxor is so much. I’ve stayed in many of the Luxor East Bank hotels & have paid nothing close to that. I’m in Luxor currently as my husband is from here & as a Brit when you’re with an Egyptian your experience is very different. No one tries to sell me a thing.

I wasn’t keen to go but my husband desperately wanted to and eventually wore me down. We travelled with a company known in the UK for looking after “older” travellers and I was absolutely awestruck at what we saw. You have to see it to believe it. Yes there was security everywhere and yes the locals were pushy but travelling in company with a guide gave us protection. A must see destination.

Going by your video, Egyptian people seem so kind, welcoming and friendly. I have always wanted to go to Egypt, but my family is terrified of going. I am an avid traveler, so I can't say I've never been anywhere, but Egypt is definitely a dream destination of mine! I think more people would feel safe going to this wonderful country if they prepare themselves for possible scams, learn about basic culture and customs, and book excursions in groups versus being alone in a country you have never been before. My experiences may be different than yours as a solo woman traveler, but I genuinely like to believe that 95% of people are kind, compassionate and understanding. I really hope to go to Egypt by my 70th birthday haha. Currently 32 so quite a ways a way, but definitely something to look forward to.

I loved Egypt when I went in June 2007. Was nice and hot - high 30s to 40 degrees so I felt like I was back home in Perth, Western Australia, which I had been away from for over two years. It was like another world, which is quite interesting, as I have heard that there may be extra-terrestrials responsible for building the pyramids - I wouldn't be surprised. I did a Nile cruise which was great! I should have paid the extra to do a 5 star cruise but I thought 4 star would be fine. A few teething problems at the start but it turned out alright so I didn't regret it. I spent a few days in Cairo and that was an eye-opening experience. I went to Hurghada for 4 days on the Red Sea and managed to relax and feed fish just in from the shoreline as well as go on a boat dive. I found the people to be very authentic, friendly and accommodating. One guy in Cairo started a conversation and when he knew I was looking to buy bananas he took me down some side streets to find them. I would never have found them otherwise. He owned a perfume/scent shop and took me there and gave me a drink. We chatted for about an hour and he showed me pictures of him with some well-known people. I bought some male and female scents which I found excellent. You only needed a small dab and it lasted ages. Would love to go back again one day...

Hello from Nee Zealand Tim, look forward to you coming here. My cruise down the Nile and trip to Egypt was the best trip of my life, unfortunately was 45° Celsius and really quite unbearable heat, but still worth every moment. Will def go back in April when its cooler. I never got bad belly when all my companions did. I stayed away from anything with water/ice. No salad washed in water, only bottled water, only hot food and probably about 2 tonne of pastires and desserts. I found that staying away from all non bottled water was the key, even when brushing my teeth I used bottled water Thank you Tim, you have literally allowed me to relive so many special moments I had. I love watching you and your travels but this one was just a little more special ❤

I visited Luxor during a Week's cruise along the Nile as a kid. Now I'm finishing my BA in Egyptology and was at a premier for a new exhibition I helped with The trip really gave me the love for Egypt that I've kept ever since! It's wonderful to see you filming some of the areas I've been studying for 3 years - I've literally been translating a papyrus that records the first strike in history. It mentions how the workers who build the tombs of the Valley of the Kings walked to the back of the mortuary temples that you flew over. After my Masters that I'll start later this year, I hope to travel to luxor to really put my studies to the test!

I have been there in 2001 - shortly after the massacre of Luxor (Dayr-el-Bahri in 1997). I also stayed at the Hilton Luxor Resort and Spa and I was so surprised: everything has changed! I don't recognize anything. Even more in the Valley of the Kings the "Visitor Center" vis-à-vis of King Tut-Anch-Amuns grave didn't barely exist. There was nothing (I remember well, because I was thirsty and wanted really something to drink). The Temple of Karnak: so many new sidewalks in front an in the temple - I can't believe it! It's a whole new place... I think I have to revisit Luxor and Karnak.

My hubby and I absolutely love Egypt, we've been 3 times, and honestly we couldn't have asked for better service and experience. The locals are so warm and friendly. Yes pushy at first, but a firm but polite no thank you is all that you need, especially if you say it in Arabic, which can surprise them, and does get appreciated. As for tummy troubles, my hubby has quite bad IBS and we have never once been ill in Egypt, if anything he was a hell of a lot better. We learned our lesson on our honeymoon 14 years ago when we went to the Dominican Republic. Never have ice in your drinks, no matter how hot it is, or if they insist it is bottled water. Also a big factor in an upset tummy and feeling poorly believe it or not is the temperature of your room. We all go on holiday and with it being super hot, especially in places like Egypt, we like to crank the air conditioning up and have a cold room. Going between cold and hot several times a day can affect you, and make you poorly and we were advised never to have the room lower than 21°C, so you don't get that huge shock when going between the two. Obviously hygiene is also a big factor, so if the hotel doesn't have a sink or sanitizer machines outside the restaurant (this was before the pandemic) just get yourself a little bottle of hand sanitizer and before you eat, use it especially after touching things in communal areas, door handles, stair rails etc etc. Also don't bother buying loads of insect repellent over here, wait until you get there, find a local supermarket and get some of the local ones. They are far cheaper, but also much more effective, they do absolutely stink though, but it's definitely worth it. I absolutely love that you've been to Cairo and now Luxor, and highlighted both in the way that you have. One final warning on Egypt, beware the local vodka! Oh my word that stuff is like rocket fuel, so if you normally drink doubles, start out with a single, and see how you get on. I look forward to your next post. X

Hey Tim - with reference to the dodgy belly… check the bottled water - BASICALLY water with a higher sulphate level to calcium will make things ‘softer’ - and then higher calcium to sulphate will bind you up (in the politest possible way to explain) so always look for higher calcium levels when abroad 🙏🏼

Looks amazing, would be too hot for me even on the coolest days. I loved the tombs and the balloon ride looked like a once in a lifetime experience. Thank you for the great video, felt like I was there without the mosquitos!

Great video. Did a balloon trip in 2006 and the temple things. Not been back since but your video makes me think it’s time to go back, I love Luxor, have been three times already and a lot changed since I first went there in 1990

Tim, this is the best video! Luxor is the place to visit in Egypt. I have been to Cairo but not Luxor. It looks lovely at the Hilton! Thank you!🌴

Gorgeous! What an amazing place. Gave me goosebumps to see inside the tombs - the footage you got is spectacular. The private table by the edge of the Nile reminded me of Shirley Valentine! Fantastic video Tim👏

I was there and my suggestion is to bring $1,000 in $1bills for the toilets (you ALWAYS have to tip) and $2,000 in $100 bills for the merchants/exchange shops.

Great video again. I love Luxor I have been to Egypt so many times. But it's been about 14 years since I last went. Need to go again soon I love the place. Luxor is my favourite place but you need to go to Aswan it's beautiful. My 1st time I backed packed it all over Egypt in 1997. I stayed in the cheapest places I could. Always found the people great if you interact with them. A little tip for traveling and the mosquitoes. Start taking vitamin B2 tablets 2 weeks before you travel. I have been sat next to people being eaten alive. While not one comes near me.

The Egyptians can spin some tall stories and rip you off in seconds but I still love Egypt and it’s sights and sounds.

Your videos are so natural Tim, I feel like I’ve just been walking around with a mate. I also like how you don’t add music and show only the glossy side of things, it keeps it real! Cheers.

Great vid as usual! Brout back lots of memories👍🏾 We visited Luxor a year after the Egyptian Arab spring so approx 2012. Due to the western reporting, the world had stayed away through fear so, besides a few other brave souls, we kind of had the place to ourselves. It transpired that the uprising took place in Cairo hundreds of kilos away and therefore there was never any danger elsewhere but most people just struck Egypt off the list of places to visit that year 🤷🏾‍♂️. Upside was the tranquility at the tombs and other excursions. Downside was that every vendor was desperate for your custom making it almost impossible to enjoy a casual stroll anywhere. Great hotel though (forgotten the name) right on the Nile, 400 rooms about 10% full, about 3-4 huge pools virtually all to ourselves and you also had the ability to swim in the Nile!

Wow how extraordinary! Seeing the mummy & resting place of Tutankhamen! And Rameses! I never ever thought I would see that. The Egyptian hieroglyphics were incredible to see up close with you Tim. You look very hot Tim🥵 I bet the temperatures were cooking!!! All the Sphinx & Egyptian carvings too! Wow the resort was so luxuriant what a beautiful beach & pool area very classy! Your room was nice & a Hilton Hotel in Egypt! The Nile looks amazing I bet it was lovely to see it Tim! Palm 🌴 Trees around everywhere! Thankyou very much for this fascinating vlog. What kind Egyptian Men giving you a gift & being so nice & friendly. You're well loved in Egypt Tim!

Wow so much in this video! Hope I get to go in a hot air balloon, bucket list. Luxor isn't though but it's great to go with you and you really showed us properly what's inside the tombs, thank you. Incredible artwork and statues. The view from the hotel & the pools looked wonderful. It's weird to see that much opulence in a country with so much poverty. No 'made in China' tat in their markets, proper home made stuff, lovely! I'd have wanted to buy everything!!

Thanks for the upload! We just got back from a Nile Cruise which included Luxor. We chickened out of the balloon flight, but were in the same alabaster shop/factory as you.🙂 The Nile cruise was impressive, I would recommend it if you get the right boat.
