Ethanol is finding its way into fuel in many jurisdictions now. In Canada, E5 and E10 are now mandatory everywhere; however, that doesn't mean you can't find ethanol-free premium gas for sale right now on Vancouver Island. No matter which side of the debate you side with, winterizing your motorcycle is going to be harder with ethanol in the tank. Phase separation, corrosion, and rubber parts will degrade. In this video, I'll tell you where to buy ethanol-free gas on Vancouver Island in November 2023 through at least early 2024. And if you can't, then what to do to avoid the perils of ethanol on motorcycles, small engines, and cars made prior to 2006.

Otherwise, you can try with a test tube to find out which petrol stations have the lowest octane content or if there is any difference. Perhaps there is an E test kit on Amazon or some other website
@Andersljungberg

However, the octane content will be increased if you mix in Ethanol yourself in the petrol. And a little higher oxygen content. Which apparently can have positive effects on Dynotest anyway. Especially if the engine is mapped for the fuel. of course you can buy high-octane Ethanol free fuel and mix it with regular petrol There are companies and websites that sell racing petrol. They should probably also exist in Canada

Here in the states we have a select few stations with ethanol free, but the difficult part is finding a high octane e free. I have to travel 40 miles to get the 92 octane. I may grab some gas cans, drive out there and fill them to keep some on hand

It's getting tougher everywhere. I've heard locals around here getting aviation (100 octane/non ethanol), but I don't have enough knowledge or experience to comment on that impact over the long term on engines designed to run on 89/91 etc. Cheers.

I live in the north island area and will be checking this out today in Campbell River, which is north of Parksville. I have been getting 94 at Chevron but didn't notice they removed the stickers. Thanks for the heads up! ((EDIT)) I checked Chevron stations in Campbell River and Comox here on the north island and all had the "no ethanol" sticker removed from the 94 grade. The Co-Op in Comox had a "no ethanol" sticker on the 91 grade but the Campbell River Co-Op did not have the sticker on the pump, so it looks like the ethanol free stuff doesn't come north of Comox....

Think it depends on the supplier. Could be that the sticker was never on the pump at Campbell R? Might be worth a ride down to Comox for a jerry of 91 Coop for the winter. Thanks for the feedback. Cheers.

You are correct BMR, my ears did prick up at this news but is of no value to me given where I live. I do remain sceptical because I have wonder why they are not using the ethanol at those stations. Also at best you have delayed the inevitable only until next spring.

Coop get their gas from several different distributors. The explanation given to me by Mr Vaughn is that Nanaimo north is served by Suncor, who use petro canada 91 - which currently has no ethanol in it. Duncan south COOPs use a different distributor. This gas is e5 and e10. Bring a jerry can. 🙂

Good video. I am so fortunate to live in an area (Black Hills) where there are many stations with non ethanol premium and a couple of stations with non ethanol in all three grades. I have, personally, experienced problems with the effects of long term usage of alcohol in the fuel. My '04 Guzzi Titanium stranded me on a road trip, a few years ago, when the fuel line inside the tank literally dissolved and came off the pump. A Guzzi Guru from St Joe Missouri, Ace Melott, rescued me and took my bike and I to his shop. He pulled out a gob of what use to be the fuel line and replaced it with expensive ethanol resistant fuel line. No more problems. I, now, carry a bottle of Star Tron with me on any road trips. Even before that experience I had small engines that would not start in the Spring after sitting with that crap in them. Now, all of my chainsaws, lawn mowers, snowblower, rototiller, generators AND motorcycles get nothing but real gasoline. I do add Sea Foam to the tank and run it through the carbs or injectors for a few minutes if these will be sitting for awhile. Ethanol based fuels are a big rip off and there is little or no evidence that they improve air quality. If fuel efficiency goes down, you are running more exhaust gasses trough your tail pipe. How does that help? The AMA has been all over this and has been fighting the expansion and mandating of these BS fuels for years, now. Keep spreading the word.

Agree: it's a politically motivated play, with those in power likely driving electric vehicles...I'm not an anti government type, but rationally, I just dont see how this helps at all. Pointless. Not sure if the 2016 Griso in the garage has alcohol resistant fuel lines - I will check that out, as ethanol will be here mid 2024... Cheers.

Here in Norway we are blessed with the fact that two of the gas chains still carry ethanol free gas. Shell and Esso have stated that they don't intend to cancel E5 as of now. A lot of the other chains have experienced a drop in customer numbers since they went over to just carry E10.

Interesting. What are the laws in Norway? Canada has mandated E5/10, but it is not available everywhere yet...It's been very low-key, without many consumers aware of it; consequently, there's been no real reaction, except by some motorcyclists. Cheers.

In Norway we follow the EU regulations in just about everything we do. So until the EU makes a rule that ban the use of E5, the vendors and chains can do as they please. There has been some reactions from the owners of motorcycles and older/classic cars about the difficulty of getting hold of ethanol free fuel, but since bot Esso and Shell have stations all over it isn't really a problem yet. I went trough a large part of Europe on motorcycle this last summer, and every gas station we stopped by had E5 @@BlueMarbleRider

Co-op pumps don’t have a dedicated premium pump. You get the first two or three litres of regular to empty that hose before the premium flows which is switched at the underground pump switch. Chevron has premium non ethanol with dedicated hose almost everywhere In BC.
@BlueMarbleRider
@BlueMarbleRider 2 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, Chevron are now all 94 ethanol. After doing much research and speaking to head office, there is no more 94 non ethanol at Chevron on Vancouver Island. That was my go to pump up until last fall. You are right that the coop pumps are not dedicated, but better only a litre or two of ethanol gas then the rest non ethanol than any other alternative out there. The COOP 91 is the only non ethanol brand around on the island.

But what do they recommend for petrol for vintage cars or is there petrol for vintage cars in Canada? here in Europe, the approach is slightly different. eg Sweden and Great Britain, 98 octane is petrol with a very low level of ethanol or none at all. That means up to 5%. Note that in Europe we calculate Octane in a different way than in the USA. 93 octane in the USA is correspond to 98 octane in Sweden

Not having owned a vintage car or motorcycle, I'm not sure what they do with the new fuels. I just went to a vintage car show where there were hundreds of running vintage cars so they must have some sort of solution to the problem. I'm assuming there's an additive of some sort. Here you can buy anything up to 94 octane but as you say that is calculated a different way than you do in Europe and the UK. That probably equates to 99 octane in Europe. However, the highest ethanol free petrol that we can buy here is 92 octane or about 97 in Europe, but that will be phased out shortly and everything will be E5 or E10.Thanks for the feedback. cheers.

I live in Ontario and since our dear leader Justin mandated all fuels contain ethanol I have not been able to locate any here. So this year I am going to run my tank as low as I feel comfortable and put in 4 litres cans of the engineered fuel available in hardware stores for small engines. It is costly so I may only put a half tanks worth in with fuel stabilizer. My other option is to make a run across to the US and get some there. Last time I was in Port Huron Michigan there was an Exxon station a few blocks from the Blue Water Bridge that had a dedicated pump with 90 octane ethanol free fuel. I kick myself for not getting some then, but I did not have any jerry cans with me.

Surely there must be additives that will reduce the biggest disadvantages of ethanol such as reducing or preventing corrosion and lubricating Googla E10 additive if you can also find reviews on those products then it can be good. If it had been E 85, some in Sweden would have said Redlight

We've also gone all E10 here in Ireland. I try to remove it myself. Mixing the coloured water water with the fuel then siphoning off the ethanol free fuel..I hope! So far so good. Lots of videos on utube how to do that. Love your griso

I have ethanol free near me but its 89 octane which makes a discernable difference in the smoothness and response of my griso engine. Im wondering if its better to use fuel stabilizer on ethanol fuel or octane booster on the ethanol free fuel...
@BlueMarbleRider
@BlueMarbleRider 8 ай бұрын
Depends how old your bike is. If it is not certified for E10, then perhaps octane booster. If it is certified, then 91 and fuel stabilizer - something that says it stops phase separation of the ethanol. Good luck.
@Andersljungberg

Then there must be additives specifically for E10 petrol. It exists here in Sweden anyway. Note in Sweden it is called up to 10% when it says E10. we have a reduction duty of 6%. here, the discussion has probably been more about the mixing of biodiesel in regular diesel such as RME
@Andersljungberg
@Andersljungberg 23 күн бұрын
I suspect that it is in the following way that when the petrol company adds ethanol without raising the octane level, they probably do it by reducing another octane raising chemical. when a private person mixes in E 85 with ordinary gasoline, he does not reduce the amount of another octane-raising chemical in the gasoline. privately, the person who mixes ethanol into ordinary petrol does so to raise the octane content. and then it is likely that the result will be better When it comes to performance in any case. For E85 Is at more than 100 octane And can contain up to 30% oxygen
