To everyone stressing that they need a better camera, YOU PROBABLY DON’T. I remember when I first started I wanted an EOS R so bad. All I was thinking about was EOS R, EOS R. But then one day I realized that I wasn’t even pushing my 80D to the limit. So, the only time you need a new camera is when you’ve outgrown your current one and it’s holding you back. Yes it’s always fun to get a new camera and new gear but we don’t have unlimited budgets, we have to be rational. 🤟

More important than the camera and sensor itself is actually the quality of the lighting setup used. Investing in really good lights and knowing how to properly use them is much more effective than just upgrading your camera. Even with mirrorless cameras you’ll get really impressive image quality out of it as long as the scenes have great lighting, using techniques like color contrast and diffused lights, people oftentimes forget about the basics of filmmaking. Great imagery is all about lighting above all. Good job though, always a pleasure. Greetings.

Yes!! Lighting is underrated. Also wardrobe, make-up, VFX, finding good actors, locations, sound guy, music composer, great script, editor/colorist etc... For indies or KZfaq shortfilms, more money should be put in front of the lens rather then buying an expensive camera. Cell phones can look pretty good these days with great lighting.

You're right in that choosing a camera (or any other gear) should be based on what it needs to do. With so many options for dual-audio setups, I think your first couple of levels could be restructured, though. I run multiple cameras and separate audio and rarely need timecode or XLR inputs on the cameras themselves. As long as the camera is getting some kind of scratch audio and the recording date/time stamps are relatively accurate (within a minute or so), clips can be synced in post.

Just upgraded from mirrorless cameras to two C70’s because I was sick of trying to “rig” up a mirrorless camera to be a cinema camera. I got by for 2 years that way, but I want my XLR’s built into the body, and the ND Filters and a long battery. Now it is time to buckle down and learn this camera... because it is more important to master the camera you have... Planning on using these cameras for the next 5 years...

The a6400 is an ABSOLUTE BEAST. If you can crank good footage out of it then you will do even BETTER with a camera that shoots on an uncompressed codec BECAUSE you know how to work around the limitations of lower level cameras.

Great video, Mark! However, I feel like you missed a really important group between tier 1 and 2. The leap from a Canon T3i to an R5 is pretty huge, both in terms of quality and price. Between those two, you have a list of what I'd call semi-professional mirrorless/DSLR cameras like the Fuji X-H1, the Canon RP and the Nikon Z50. These range in sensor sizes and features - some have log profiles and high frame-rates. They all cost around $1000, and can be used for photography, vlogging, weddings and lower end professional work. They're the sorts of cameras I'd recommend to someone getting into freelance work who doesn't have a lot of money up-front. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks again.

Thank you for this. Extremely helpful. My wife just got me a GoPro9 to start playing with but low light is a problem. I wasn't expecting much from it and it's been a pretty decent camera with the new stabilization built in, but it's obviously no FX9. Info on dynamic range and rolling vs global shutter was really interesting and definitely something I wasn't aware of. I started out as a PA on commercials, worked a few music videos, ended up joining Local 724 in Hollywood to build sets, went freelance as an audio editor (not random. life long musician with a lot of studio experience), got into video because we moved to Europe for 3 years and took a ton of pics/video (amateur tourist style), and now I've been editing for a few years and I really wanted to learn more about the filming portion.

I think you missed the point when putting the Blackmagic Pocket so low, it has two mic inputs (3.5mm + mini XLR), it has large 5" touchscreen that's uncomparable with mirrorless cameras and I believe it has timecode built in, so no need to input it through additional device.

Thanks for the great advice. I've been suffering from this as well, "I need the newest camera!" "I need full frame!" I think I'm finally gotten to the place, where I'm beginning to mature. I'm shooting with the X-T3 now, and as it is I'm not sure that I need all the features it has. I'll probably try to get an X-H1 when I need a new or additional camera at some point, or even a smaller camera. I'm mostly doing documentary photography, with architectural and landscape elements involved, but always within the perimeters of documenting, so I don't really need more than what I have. It's rather the lenses I should focus on. It would be great with IBIS and a solid built, but besides that I really don't need more than what I have. As a matter of fact, should I go full frame, then it'll be Nikon's Z5. But the cost of switching seems to be too expensive as it is, having to sell all my lenses with the camera, and then get new stuff. And full frame is really not a need, especially considering that I'm not a professional, so... I'm actually fine where I'm at, and weirdly that's my biggest challenge. The gear is good, it's my photography which needs focus :)

I enjoy your videos! Keep it up! I thought that timecode for a cinema camera is a holdover from when filmstock was widely used. The timecode standard ensured that various cameras with different motors, shutter assemblies, wiring, all had the same locked frame rate for post-prod, optical printers, etc., I've never seen narrative shoots with modern cameras that needed timecode. Broadcast is another thing and use timecode and some kind of sync/gen lock for top quality. I also never see the kind of extreme whip pans that people use as an example of the rolling shutter in any movie or tv commercial.

I found DSLR's/mirrorless so limiting and cinema cameras were out of my price range that I bought a traditional video camera with a 1 inch sensor that has XLR inputs, 4K 24p/1080-120p, built in ND filters and so much more. Shallow depth of field is not the end all be all. It's perfect for running and gunning and for longer interviews. I challenge people not to over look traditional video cameras. They aren't as bad as people make them out to be.

I owned a Sony EX3 for a couple years. It was great. If they work for you, then all power to you!

What tier would the bmpcc 4k and bmpcc 6k fall into?

Why no mention of Fuji? X-T3 and 4 shit all over every thing you mentioned in the tier 2. Especially for video, Fuji low cost apsc is the king in this category. Rest of the vid, excellent! :)

I think one thing to note about the "Tier 6" Cinema Cameras is that most still have a rolling shutter sensor design. They are just typically specced at a faster reader out speed than lower Tiers. For example the Alexa ALEVIII Sensor is really fast, at between 2ms to 6ms depending on the camera. While the FX9 is about 22.2ms, the C500 Mark II is 15.6ms (based on CineD's tests). I need to check some more sources, but I know at the very least they are not Global Shutter Sensors. Really the only true global shutter camera on the list is the Komodo which is pretty special considering it's price.

yeah, I think I may have mentioned it but the Alexa just has good rolling shutter tech but not true global shutter. The F55 was also amazing for rolling shutter

@@markbone You did, I think in a way calling it a global shutter look. It's true it's really close and is really noticible when doing any action. The F55 was special for it's time too, since it had a proper global shutter and I believe was the first digital camera cinema camera to ever feature one. Thanks for this post too. I think it can really help people who are making investment decisions while focusing on the working things.

I still have my canon m50. Perfect for beginners and learning about cameras. Like from the tier 3 cams above i,drent them instead of buying one.
