I wish I could justify buying one, I do have a deep sea bamboo rod I inherited. Truly a work of art.

Thanks for being so generous with your knowledge of the process and sharing your experience with bamboo fly rods. You’re a master artisan and I sincerely appreciate this video. My earliest memories of fishing were with a “cane pole” from the local hardware store outfitted with a hook and bobber. I graduated to the zebco 33 and fished our neighbor’s pond most days growing up. I was introduced to flyfishing in my teenage years which has been a lifelong passion. It seems fitting to return to bamboo and will order my next rod from your company! Thanks.

Glad you saw it informational. Nothing like fishing with a bamboo rod... the vintage aspect, standing in a stream, surrounded by God's beauty... nothing like it. Appreciate you taking the time to drop a note. Our best to you!

I use Swearingen Planing forms just Google them. Excellent price. Bellinger is a good choice and the folks at JD Wagner are excellent. I use their automated binder and other tools from JDW. Hope this helps.

@@wildbearings I found Tonkin cane at Michaels that was 6 ft I made three fly rods .one two piece,and two single piece fly rods. They cast and handle fish pretty well. I needed to practice before I start buying expensive pieces of bamboo and messing up

He's probably refering to split cane rods or fly rods specifically. Ofcourse bamboo rods have been around in Asia for much, much longer than that.

I think bamboo from china has low density Kg per m3, try hotter & more windy climate country, i believe its close to equator you will get better & stronger fibers.
@borgkye
@borgkye 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. I make my bamboo rods in malaysia with local bamboos. The power fibers are smaller as opposed to the tonkin but they are more compact and better damping, they make a faster rods.

@@borgkye Yeah, i heard this info in bussiness forum that someone who export bamboo sliced stick to the US from Java, Indonesia talk about this, every container in same size he provide is 30% - 40% heavier than bamboo product from China. which mean, huge difference in fiber quality, more dense, heavier & stronger fibers i believe.

I struggle to believe the USA has the patent on bamboo fishing rods. They have been recorded over 750 years ago in China and 300 years ago in England - so the 1900 s ain’t really the origin is it?
@wildbearings
@wildbearings Жыл бұрын
Maybe… or maybe a gunsmith created the first hexagonal… but let’s not split hairs okay… first mass production was early 1900’s unless you want to split hairs and then you can be correct about split cane in China and Europe

You explain this well. Unfortunately - the supplier of your raw material now knows all your techniques ( developed over decades ) They have no loyalty to you. They will steal your ( freely given ) knowledge, and your Sales will diminish - because they can do it much cheaper ( and now, as capably ) in China. Why should a US fisherman pay $1500 for a rod made in US when they can buy an equally good one ( your knowledge, same materials ) for eg $479.99 ?
@wildbearings
@wildbearings 5 ай бұрын
we provide information for the good of the sport... we aren't looking for loyalty... our buyers are specific and unique high-wealth individuals that understand the value of a properly made bamboo rod... go buy a $500 bamboo rod and best of luck because it won't last... ours are custom for a reason... one of the key features of a custom rod is the silk wrap patterns and that's where a lot of time and labor is spent... the ferruls used in China are cheap and you can't mass produce a custom bamboo rod. We can debate this all day long, but we get those rods to repair and they are not repairable. Appreciate your feedback.

Oh honestly, Toby, that's not very nice. You might as well ask why anyone would buy a $479.99 fishing rod when you can order your fish ready cooked from the chippie and eat it at home while sitting in your comfy chair watching TikTok videos. 😁
