Excellent as always! I really enjoyed that, Simon. I fully expected you to go all Train Spotting on the platform! Back in 2013 I rode to Loch Ossian & back along that estate road. I vividly remember toiling downhill to the loch into a horrendous headwind but flying back up hill in top gear with the wind behind on the way back. I've always wanted to return there and ride more of the gravel roads around there.

Excellent Simon. Just spent a long weekend in Glencoe (staying at Lagangarbh House) and next time I'm up there will take the gravel bike (we were headed for this snow on foot this time out) Was looking at the track which goes from Kingshouse to Rannoch station (19k= 38k out and back) over Rannock Mor, and also just following the WHW to Tyndrum and back along the Old Military Road.

I just turned 68 and have been bike racing/riding since the 70’s and am trying to continue and not become an old curmudgeon 🙂 I’m seriously considering doing a big challenge right where you were in this one, Further Elements from Corrour Station in October. I’m hoping to see more of Scotland too. Thanks.

Hey Joe - yes, Camille came up with a good route there, not that I did it. For some long distance routes to do any time look for the Badger Divide or An Turus Mor. Or of course the extremely challenging Highland Trail 550!

Simon - I should also add - this video showed a true/real adventure; nicely studied and planned, and well-prepared. BUT you also used skills and experience during the ride to deal with the unsuspected circulstances in a lesser-known area. I feel that doing all that is so impowering to anyone. As a professional guide I love taking people out into the natural world. I've had a number of life-long urban dwellers out at night in the forest and deserts of Arizona and recently had one 60+ year old tell me she had NEVER been outside after dark. It changed her whole perspective. @@alwaysanotheradventure

@@davidgriffin8717 Thanks for taking the time to notice and comment on this aspect Davey. I'm aware that I need to share good (if not always best) practice. We used to do that route waayyyyy back in the day. Take the train the Rannoch station and race to Fort William to try and catch the last train back to Glasgow. It was a cracking route on an old rigid mountain bike. Your video has tempted me to retry it again, though this time on my gravel bike and perhaps at a slightly more leisurely pace.

Quite a route, very interesting. I'd got off at Corrour in March last year and backpacked across Leum Uilleim, Beinn a Bhric, ultimately en-route to Roybridge. I did not know of this well, was misty on my traverse across Beinn a Bhric, would had been quite atmospheric, considering the Cailleach's tale had I encountered it. I hope that the cycle carriages catch on and extend the service and to include the east line to, much prefer to travel into Scotland by train (from Newcastle) to go backpacking or bikepacking.
@alwaysanotheradventure
@alwaysanotheradventure 5 ай бұрын
Hey Iain - oh I travelled from Newcastle (home) to the west highlands countless times - train never really cuts it though. Those carriages are great but limited. Many times Scotrail is a real PIA when it comes to bikes. I highly recommend The Bone Cave if you're interested in these sort of myths and legends

I just grabbed my first Gravel Bike end of January. I'm in South West of Scotland...Lockerbie in Annandale. Plenty tracks that seem made for Gravels bikes down here. I'll not be up no mountains in winter though. 😂 Next year we have a new train service stopping in Lockerbie London -Stirling. It will get me pretty close to the edge of the highlands. July with a tent.

Sorry to burst the appreciation bubble but although I normally like your videos and appreciate the effort that goes into making them I feel that, in this case specifically, you are doing more harm than good. Only my opinion but: 1 wrong bike for the terrain 2 wrong gear for the weather 3 setting a bad example for others who might feel this is ok. 4 There's a reason they're called 'gravel bikes'! If you were a hill walker you'd be slated for tackling winter climbs in poor conditions with inadequate kit. Same goes for bikers. Sorry!
@alwaysanotheradventure
@alwaysanotheradventure 5 ай бұрын
Happy to have your criticism, although I think you're being deliberately negative to "burst" my "appreciation bubble" - whatever that is. I'm not going to get into a protracted discussion, this is my only comment in reply and it ends here. 1. The bike was spot on. Day two is a gravel bike route, and with 53mm tyres this was the ideal set up. You could make an argument that I shouldn't have bothered carrying a bike up the hill on day one, and that's a fair point. I was well within my abilities, I enjoyed myself and it was fun. I'd have done it regardless of whether the camera was there. I ditched the bike at the point I felt it could not offer me a reasonable descent. 2. I'm not sure why you think the gear was wrong? I had boots and waterproof socks. I had warm kit, food and drink. I had spare clothing, emergency shelter and satellite plb. I didn't need ice axe or crampons - if conditions had been such that I had, I would have turned around (as I did the previous weekend on a local hill). I made a point of mentioning this in the video so others would understand to do so in different conditions. I'm an experience hill walker and climber with climbs in the Himalaya and Karakorum, and first ascents in the Wrangle St Elias in Alaska. I've walked the length of the USA from Mexico to Canada, across deserts and snow choked passes in the Sierra Nevada. I'm not a beginner hill walker. 3. Setting a bad example. Here I just plain disagree or I wouldn't have posted, but you're entitled to your opinion. 4. Yes, I know.
