Wildcamping Snowdonia: The Ghosts of the Quarry: Dinorwic Slate Quarry

Join me for another truly epic wildcamping trip to the abandoned Dinorwic Slate Quarry in Snowdonia, as I go back to locate the mysterious quarryman's cabin. I explore long, dark tunnels and old quarry workings before heading up the old pathways to the higher levels. It was another amazing experience with some spooky 'goings on' in the night..

My Grandad was one of the quarrymen who went on the ropes to set the charges in Oakeley quarry in Blaenau, they had to drill holes in the slate too which could take hours as they'd use striking rods and a hammer, and hitting the rod all day would seriously effect their hearing. My other grandad actually worked at Dinorwic but I don't know what his exact job was.

🤣 we were talking about the eyes last night funny enough I've watched the video a few times Josh! Weird energy in the bothy, we got the burner going which was cool,it really did feel like eyes were on us. We literally got in our tents an there were 4 loud bangs, then our rubbish bag sounded like somebody was going through it really eerie. Hats off for camping on your own👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🐑⛺

Cracking adventure though technically not in Snowdonia, as the entire quarry, both Lakes and Llanberis itself are outside of the park boundary. My favorite area being the hills around Blaenau Ffestiniog which is also excluded from the national park but feels more like a true wilderness than some of the better known ranges!

I used to rock climb in Dinorwic a lot 25, 30 years ago, thanks for bringing it all back. It's an amazing place; you just can't appreciate the scale of it unless you go. It's only a couple of hours from me, I should make the effort to get up there again with the tarp and bivvi (have to be next spring now, I'm too old and soft for winter wild camping). And you can be in Pete's Eats for breakfast (is that still open?)

I always try and keep away from old mines and quarries, as I always thing of them as a blot on the landscape. I always think some people over the years, have made a hell of a lot of money out of these mines and quarries over the years and they should be made to completely clear the area and return it to it's former glory. Having said all that, the history of the place is amazing and you got some cracking still shots, bit a spooky place to have a brew on an evening mind, especially with that drawing on the wall.
