I would have thought the birds would prefer a nesting box higher up off the ground away from predators like cats and fox's which could easily attack a nesting box so low to the ground. I would have thought 2.5 meters or higher would be a better height. I built 6 box's 10 years ago, and they are still in use today. This is such a great little project, especially for the children to get them involved and interested in the birds, great for school holiday projects. Cheers.🐣🕊

Thanks for the good video! Good job! One thing I would like to comment on. There are a lot of woodpeckers in our forests, especially great spotted woodpeckers, and as we know, during the nesting season they like baby birds, which they catch by reaching into the nest through the flight opening. That's why I make the nests - especially the nests for the tit - a little deeper (25 - 28 cms), so the woodpeckers can't reach the nest.

Great tutorial, I was unaware about box location. Based on your comments I should move one box. I have 3 in my garden that sit on 6-foot-tall metal stakes. One box was used by House Wrens and the following year by Chickadees. A woodpecker actually increased the hole entrance of one of the boxes. Amazing sight and satisfying feeling to witness birds rearing their young in your garden!

We do get finches they use our smaller box's (Bundy QLD). We found this out because we had finches in our bird Avery, and we noticed the wild finches would come down to the birds. We would place a small container with seed, and they would come and feed. The other alternative is making a few boxes with a varied sized hole in each box. Birds that need the larger hole size will nest in the boxes with the larger holes. Cheers.

Hi there - so glad this was useful, and to be honest birds don't tend to favour the "fancy" painted boxes available in stores these days - they're more to please the humans that are buying them rather than how practical they are, birds certainly make the use of suitable holes in the wild and these aren't painted! ;) you could certainly screw the "lid" with two screws of course and just undo them carefully when you need to clean it out - I hope this is helpful, best wishes - Joel

Quality video as always mate 👌 what height would you recommend siting an owl box? I made one for our local tawny owls about 3 years ago, but not lodgers yet 😊
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much :) They would prefer something 5 to 8 metres in height I'm afraid, so you will have to find yourself a pretty mature tree - you have to avoid west and south-west for siting as they don't like to be in any wind I understand - be careful too of course! They like to be in mature trees as the young leave the nest before they can fly, perching on mature branches. It's quite a feat, but worth it in the right environment of course :) Hope that helps and doesn't put you off too much! Best wishes, Joel

@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton it's currently South facing, so that's likely why I've got no lodgers yet! Hi Joanna - glad you enjoyed this, you could always remove the tops of the boxes and add hinges I guess so they can be open and closed when needed - I clean out the birdboxes here once a year in case there are any parasites, diseases that could be transferred to new occupants and their young, but I do always wonder, with the house sparrows that nest under the roof here naturally, whether they have a thorough clean out of their nests each year... :) Best wishes, Joel

Hi Andy, utmost apologies for the delay in being able to come back to you, I've been away on large projects and just trying to catch up with everyone now. I hope I'm not too late but 15cm/150mm or 6 inches is absolutely fine. You've probably finished it now and realised that it works! Hope you get some grateful visitors soon. Best wishes, Joel

A few instructions I have read have said to use untreated timber. Are you sure there's no problem using treated wood?
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton 8 ай бұрын
Hi there, I have read various articles on this, it does appear that it's not always recommended in USA, but again it depends what website you're reading as some in USA say it's now fine. Before 2004 pressure-treated lumber was considered not to have been the safest material to be around. But the EPA banned arsenic-treated PT wood in 2004, and the products available today are completely safe. Hope this helps, the wood you use is entirely up to you of course and depends what part of the world you're in. Best wishes, Joel

Hi Draegar, I'd try your local timber merchants, I usually find the smaller family run businesses the best to use, not only because you are supporting them but they tend to have off-cuts and one-off pieces - try ringing them first :) Thanks ever so much for your support - best wishes, Joel

My garden only has room for one nest box. If I put up a great tit box will blue tits use it or do they really need a similar hole. If so I wouldn’t know which species I would prefer to put up a box for
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there James, my apologies for the delay, been one of those weeks already! ;) Blue Tits will attempt to nest in a Great-Tit sized box but of course Great Tit's will "bully" them out, plus rather sadly I did hear from a client last year that a Great Tit had nested on TOP of an already occupied Blue-Tit nest in a box, suffocating both the parent and chicks where the Great Tit was making the nest on top of them :/ So it's a difficult one, but Blue Tits would certainly appreciate the smaller hole so that the Great Tits can't access it - hope that helps a bit, let me know if you need any other advice James - best wishes, Joel

I put up two blue tit boxes and both were destroyed by the local cat sitting on top and killing all the chicks i am having to find ways to deter the cats from climbing on top ready made spikes are no good as they can walk along putting their paws in between the plastic spikes just like to say i attached the boxes to two oak trees about thirty feet high what's needed is a video or videos showing how to deter predators from killing whole families of birds
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton Жыл бұрын
I empathise re the cats and destruction Victor. The way I prevent squirrels and no doubt cats is to affix chicken wire around the box but not too close, ie leave enough gap so that the birds can of course get through and then hop into the box, but larger birds (magpies etc) and squirrels unable to. If you look for "prickle strips" on the internet, they're designed to be cut and fitted to the tops of fence panels, but they could be used on the roof of a bird box no problem, they're easily cut to size etc. Hope this helps a little but if I get a chance to do a video on this I surely will :) Best wishes, Joel

what is the point of making bird boxes and locating them in surroundings where bird's make nests anyway?
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton 9 ай бұрын
If there were standing dead-wood, trees left in place then bluetits would utilise holes in these - in the UK there is very little natural habitat like this so building these boxes helps them. Also, in the winter thousands of bluetits die (hence their large brood numbers) due to a lack of roosting places, bird boxes can provide this much needed shelter. Best wishes, Joel
@PeterPete
@PeterPete 9 ай бұрын
so what you're saying is blue tits do not nest in your area b/c there is nothing suitable to nest in and that's why you built bird boxes? If this is the case then how are the blue tits going to find the bird boxes when there aern't any blue tits in the area? @@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton

Hi. Thanks for commenting. The dimensions are as per the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) specification, so should be ample for the nesting birds. You can of course make them deeper, the birds would just need more material to fill the box. The correct positioning should deter cats, fingers crossed

Treated lumber is not a good idea. To many chemicals in the wood that is not good for the birds
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton 8 ай бұрын
Absolutely, but with pressure treated wood this ensures any preservatives are pushed to the centre of the wood, preventing rot etc and to be honest house sparrows and other birds used to use wood fascia and soffat in older properties, hence the house-sparrows name and this wood would certainly have been pressure treated (or worse) to provide longevity.
