This is a scene from the movie "Die Deutschmeister (1955)". It is not historically acurate and the storieline is very dull and dumb. Stanzi (Constance) a young girl from a bakery shop has fallen in love with a young fellow who is member of the Deutschmeister. This is a military corps playing military marshing tunes for the Kaisers army. And this young Deutschmeister has composed a new piece of military music which should be played by the Deutschmeister corps. He already asked his corporal but he had refused him. So Stanzi, his girlfriend, comes up with the idea of putting the letter and the composition in the "Hörnchen" of the Kaiser because she knew the Hörnchen will be eaten by the Kaiser because her aunt is purveyor to the court. She could not know that Wilhelm II instead of Franz Josef would get the Hörnchen. But this is the scene you can watch here. Stanzi by the way was played by Romy Schneider and the aunt by her mother Magda Schneider, who was Hitlers favourite actress. Romy made her first Sissy-movie the same year.

Looks amazing, but half those people probably left the table hungry. Royal protocol was that no one started eating before the sovereign (in this case Franz Joseph), and everyone had to stop eating once the sovereign stopped. Plus, he was the first one served. Franz Joseph was known for being a fast eater. Even state banquets rarely lasted longer than 20 minutes. If you were at the end of the table (last one served) you probably had one, maybe two, bites before your plate was whisked away. The other aspect of royal meals at that time was food would often arrive cold, as it was such a long way from the kitchen to the grand dining rooms.

Of course I don't know about your family, mine had telephone in 1901, a car by 1910 and in 1907 my greatgrandmother's sister opened the first electrical appliances store in my home town. On school schedules were foreign languages like English and French, which all in my family spoke. Before WWI, Germany had the highest social standards in the world and the population was the wealthiest.

Not sure I'd want to go the "empires of old" as such but there is a certain appeal to the old school feudalism (pre-black death) where you had a King who was top of the social hierarchy but who was reliant on nobles to maintain power. Those nobles in turn would have been dependent on lesser nobles or local landowners. Those landowners would in turn have been reliant on their tenants and workers to have a productive Freeholding. It is my understanding that after the Black Death an inevitable power vacuum ensued which resulted in society becoming overly top heavy (the great Imperial houses and Kingdoms) and the ruling elite becoming more distant from their people. So the French and Russian revolutions were somewhat justified but it is my belief that an urban elite replaced the old Imperial and Royal elite and continues to rule to this day. This elite I believe to be worse and more evil than those old Imperial and Royal houses as rather than having one person being at the top and holding ultimately responsibility and thus being ultimately accountable for the failings as well as taking ultimate credit for victories our present elite are hidden under the veil of democracy and working for "the people". The people actually meaning their family, friends and a large bloc of easily swayed "mob" so show they have "majority" support and thus the "minority" have no moral right to dispute their rule. In the past it was also more common for rulers and nobles to have their power usurped on the field of battle and this acted as a fatal and final judgement on their failings. These days we just have elections which are controlled by electoral commissions appointed by Parliaments which are controlled by political parties which are controlled by well-connected elites which give the majority of people enough food scraps to ensure their support and thus the intellectual and intelligent minority are forced to not just comply but not even imagine rebelling because the majority will inevitably support the elite who feed them the food scraps dressed as "freedom"" thus making armed rebellion a lost cause before its even begun and thus putting real free-thinking people in a worse predicament than in even the most brutal and repressive of Imperial, Royal and Communist regimes.
