I try out Nosler's 170 grain Ballistic Tip in a 1 in 10 twist 270 Winchester Short Magnum. Testing to see if it will stabilize.

Such a cool subject. Berger has one of the greatest free tools out there - Berger Twist Rate Stability Calculator. For fun I punched in your load and yes it came back as marginally stable with an SG of 1.17. 1 and under will be unstable and 1.5 and above is considered stable.

Use the jbm stability calc…it takes into account the plastic tip length…or dont include the tip length in the berger

You probably already know this but CIL (Canadian Industries Limited) that would later become IVI (Industries Valcartier Incorporée) loaded a 160 grain round nose bullet in the 270 Win. If memory serves me it first was a lead round nose and later a plastic tip round nose. They loaded many bullets with plastic tips with many being pointed. They called them Sabretip. This was probably in the 60's and 70's.

I'm going to assume a faster twist with those bullet weights would produce even tighter groups although yours are pretty good.just shot my .270win Browning x-bolt westerner with 1-7.5" twist with factory loads and the 145gr eld-x showed some real promise. I've got some 175gr Sierra, man those things are long! Good video, keep em coming.

@@hopefulballistics I considered those 170 Ballistic tips for deer. I hunt quite a bit in Alabama and most deer are under 200 pounds. I've been putting them down with 130, 140, 150 Btips for 30 years. I'd guess a 170 would do fine. I read an article on Dan Lilja's website some time back one of his favorites was the 270 Weatherby Mag shooting 130 ballistic tips from one of his own 30 to 32" barrels - dropped pronghorns at 1200 yards

Great video. I'd like to see a .270 Win Ackley Improved. As you said, I believed that any larger bullets would require a 1in8 twist. I'm not an expert, in fact I don't even reload, but I've taken a real interest of late. Like so many I'm looking for the ultimate unique unicorn cartridge - just that little bit extra special. Ironically , I know full well that it doesn't exist and is highly subjective, so... I do it anyway. Not all hunting takes place in the woods 😊

I'm in central Canada, and I haven't yet done any reloading, but I'm planning on buying the equipment required to do so, this year, hopefully (or next). I have a Tikka T3 Stainless .270 WSM that I've only ever shot 130 grain AB. Where I'll be shooting is just under 900 feet ASL. A considering up here is that the winters get cold, and air pressure will rise even more in those temperatures, so that's something to consider, when hunting time arrives - which means I would likely need to dial my loads back for both this 170, and for the 165 in your other video, if I can even find the bullets up here... I just wanted to offer a suggestion, because it is something I'm going to do this year - I have a drone (and my UAV pilot license) and I'm going to use it to get up close to check groupings. I'm just thinking that you might want to get a little drone that you can turn on after shooting a grouping, and have it fly out to the target to check it out, instead of having to walk there and back. I know I'll be testing that out this summer. I'm also going to look into getting smaller bullets, anywhere from the 85-95grain range, when I start reloading. I know there is no 'perfect rifle' but if I can look anything from an 85 grain, up to a 165 or 170, that'll cover pretty much everything I'd ever want to hunt.

@@hopefulballistics Mine has a feature where it shows on my screen (whether that's my phone, or tablet, whichever I'm using to fly the drone) it shows the distance to the drone's home point. I set the home point when it takes off, and then it shows the distance from that point - or it can show the distance to me/the controller. Either way, that can also help when setting up for specific target distances. You can turn it on, set the home point from where you're going to shoot, then fly the drone out to 100 or 200 or 300y, whatever you decide, and land it, and leave it there, then walk out to that spot, turn the drone off to conserve power, set up your target(s) and go back to your starting point and turn the drone back on whenever you need it - they take a lot less power when they're just sitting on the ground, than when they are flying. Anyway, have fun with it :-)

@ronlowney4700
@ronlowney4700 8 ай бұрын
🕵️‍♂️ Yes, I Do Derrick! The 6.8 Western Has A Water Capacity of 74 grains and the 270 wsm has a Water Capacity of 79 grains! However, Depending Upon the Type of Powder That You Are Using, You Can't Always Utilize the Extra 5 Grains of Space That the 270 wsm Has! And, As You Go Up in Powder Use, Their Is a Law of Diminishing Returns in Velocity for Magnum Cartridges! Would I Personally Rather Have a 270 wsm? Probably? But, At "Ethical Hunting Distances" I Don't Feel "Disadvantaged" in Any Way With My 270 Winchester! In Fact, I Ran The Numbers For Reloading Weatherby (He Checked My Ballistics Calculator Inputs) and Found Out That With the 165 grain Nosler ABLR Bullet, My 270 Winchester (at 9,000 ft/s Elevation, A Typical Elevation for Hunting Elk Here in Montana, Even Though I Hunt to 12,000 ft) I Can Exceed 1,500 ft lbs of Energy and 2,000 ft/s Velocity With That Bullet and Multiple Powders! So, "Your Granddad's" 270 Winchester - With That Bullet and Good Old H4831SC - Is An 800 yard (1/2 Mile) Elk Cartridge! 🤯 I Am Not Advocating For Anyone to Take Such A Shot On Game Animals, But the "Lighter Recoiling" 270 Winchester is "More Than Enough Gun" To Do It With Proper Handloading and Better Able to Put the Bullet on Target, With Less Recoil! So, Who Wants More Recoil? 🤕 If Your A 7mm Fan, Then the 280 AI Will Also Give You Similar Results and 1 More Round in Your Rifle Than Those Short/Fat Cases (Another "Important Advantage" for the 270 Winchester, 280 AI, or 30-06 - Because You Want to Keep Shooting Until Those Elk Are On The Ground)! 🤑

The biggest difference is factory twist rates. The 6.8 western saami standard twist rate is 1-8 while the Wsm is 1-10

🤣 But, As These Tests Have Shown, The 270 wsm can shoot ALL the same bullets and can do it Better (With Faster Velocities) because of the Extra 5 grains of powder capacity! So, Why Own A 6.8 Western Instead??? 🤪

@@hopefulballistics. I’m not supporting bass pro or cabellas any more. They are making a push to put us in a large national park and it will probably end all the farming in this area. Idk all the details yet but if they get their way it will definitely hurt the people living in this area. I know it’s not anyone else’s problem but our government has taken enough from the working people here. Thx

It’s a bummer that the .270wism and 6.8 Western do not have components somewhat readily available. Seems like it’s up to Hornady’s blessing if a cartridge is to survive or enlarge its shooter base. Both are excellent cartridges with impressive ballistics.

How did Winchester not know this? Thier basically trying to push the 270wsm into obscurity by introducing the new 6.8 Western but it turns out that the 270wsm shoots some of the heavier bullets just as well if not better! 🕵️‍♂️ Now, Could It Be That The Manufacturer's Knew This All Along, But Didn't Want To Make Us These Heavier Bullets Without Selling Us A New Cartridge or Rifle With a Different Twist Barrel (Even In the "Traditional/Established Calibers" That We Like)? ☹ Though The Laws of Physics Don't Change, It Certainly Appears To Me That The "Margin For Bullet Stability" Is Much Greater Than The Calculations That The Manufacturer's Were Presenting To Us (Like The Bullet Stability Program On The Burger Website)? I believe I’m the one he’s talking about using my 270 WSM at 36 ft elevation and not getting them to stabilize. You have to remember, elevation matters, especially in my case. I’m in AK and while I hunt in higher elevations, my range is backed up to the inlet. I shot some hand loads in my 6.8 Western this weekend with IMR 4955 and the 165 ABLR, I’ll just stick with the 6.8 for heavies and the 270 WSM for 130-150 gr. bullets. I’m still going to test the 170 gr. BT’s in my WSM and regular 270 Win, as I just bought more for $19.75 a box through Midway. Besides, we don’t know things until we give it a try, many times.
