Hello, Becca! I'm from Romania and I love your work and your content is so helpful for me. I'm a mamma of a 7 months old boy. Here in Romania we don't have a healthy "sleep culture". I've used a lot of your sleep tips, thank you very much.🙏 I wish more people knew about your channel. My baby was born with macroglossia (large tongue) so he couldn't take the pacifier. Now we uses his two finger to help him fall asleep, but when he was a newborn, soothing him was hard.

Elisa, I know a teenager that has his front teeth and his two fingers bent, curved, because he sucked on them for quite a while. Indeed, he was abandoned by his mum and was living in an orphanage, but I imagined this can happen to anyone. So you should make sure he gets rid of the habit at one point.

That’s what started this whole nightmare for our journey. She was in the Nicu and was getting heel pricks every 8 hrs so the nurse felt bad and asked me if it was OK to give her a pacifier, and I said yes. Also, at the time it prevent SIDS 0:03 so in the beginning, it’s great. My biggest regret now ,is not weaning her at an earlier age. she just turned 2 I am working on weaning her. She’s always only used it at nap time and bedtime, but she’s had a mouth full of teeth before turning a year old .. I have read as long as I wean her before the max cut off of three years of age from a pediatric orthodontic dentist that their mouth can shift back to normal, but that is the Max cut off🎉 now I’m not sure how much truth is in that if anyone else who is a pediatric dentist can tell me if they’re right or wrong I would greatly appreciate it. I’ve tried snipping we’ve tried the fairy we’ve tried even bye-bye binky books just throwing them away because we are a big girl now nothing works, any helpful advice we use Dr browns

Hahaha my mom took my oldest pacifier away at 3 month and he started sucking his thumb well 14 years later and I till catch him sucking it unfortunately. My second had a pacifier we took it at 2 years old but he is fine and doesn’t suck on anything. So it’s super difficult what’s the right thing to do. My third is breastfed so she does take it sometimes but def less she is 9 weeks now and sleeps without it for most part. I didn’t realize too when she has it she doesn’t sleep as well as without

Well I am very glad I found this video because next week my daughter is hitting her 16th week. Do I put the pacifier in to help her sleep however, it almost always falls out in 20 to 30 minutes after I put her down and she sleeps just fine through the rest of the night. Yea...the room share...my wife and I were planning to move her into her own room at 3 months. However, we ended up catching Covid so we moved her 2 weeks early and she took to it very first night.

My baby is almost 14 weeks old; he’s been sleeping with a paci but whenever the paci falls out, he wakes up crying - several times in the night. What should we do? Should we just continue doing what we do until he reaches 16w to get rid of it?

Hey Samantha! Some babies just don't want to suck on their hands to fall asleep and that is OK! He may find another way to self-soothe like wiggling around or rubbing his face. If he is looking for someone else to help him fall asleep, I recommend my Baby E-Coaching to teach him to fall asleep independently! littlezsleep.com/baby

So is it not easier to get ride of a pacifier when the child gets older like 10+ months so that they don’t become depended on sucking on fingers. Bec I’ve heard it’s so much harder to break a baby/child from sucking fingers than it is to remove a pacifier later on.. just wondering. Bec everyone I know that let’s there kids suck there fingers cant get there children to stop. One is so extreme that he has to wear the mittens like finger protectors to help train him to not put his fingers in his mouth even at the age of 2.

Genuinely asking. All of this is fair, but if the baby won't soothe with their hands, and you have to rock or feed to settle, isn't this just trading one evil for another? A pacifier is a lot easier to just pop in than having to rock/feed to sleep. What would your suggestion be in this case, besides CIO?

My first baby didn’t like the pacifier, but my second loves it before naps or bedtime. After she gets drowsy I’ll try and pull it out slowly and she immediately wakes up and gets so frustrated. I’ve seen her try and suck on her hands but she doesn’t stick with it and gets so mad. She’s 4 months old now and naps are 40 minutes on the dot. I feel like I need to get rid of the pacifier but I’m so nervous to because I literally can’t calm her down without it. Any suggestions?

But then when is the best time to give my baby a paci when you don't recommend give it when they're fussy? My baby is tired but she can't easily sleep no matter how close she is in my arm. I want to give the paci to sooth her better so she can have a sleep that she needed. And one more, does using a pacifier can affect the deep latch of brestfeeding?
@littlezsleep

If your baby is a newborn, you can offer the paci when you are helping them fall asleep. As long as breastfeeding is established and there are no issues, it should not affect latch!

So are you recommending to remove the pacifier during the 4 month regression? Or right before it starts? Or right after it finishes?
@littlezsleep
@littlezsleep 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Kelly! Great question! You will want to remove the pacifier at 16 weeks. At this age, baby is able to learn to self soothe. The 4 month regression is caused by baby's sleep patterns maturing. If baby was relying on a lot of outside support to fall asleep, those strategies may not help baby anymore. BUT some babies do not have a 4 month regression at all. Check out this video for more info on the 4 month regression :) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a7CAqtea37HTp2Q.html

My best friend's oldest daughter sucked her thumb, and she couldn't get her to stop for years (7+ years). Her other two kids, after she weaned them off the pacifier, there were no issues with finger sucking. My son never took a pacifier, so my boob was his only source of comfort. I plan to use a pacifier for my next one and hope starting earlier will make a difference. However, I would never recommend replacing a pacifier with a finger.

Dental nurse here and completely agree. The amount of children we have that need orthodontic treatment due to thumb sucking or even very prolonged pacifier use is alot! Much better to either not use a pacifier at all or stop it before the age of 1 but earlier is better to stop and don't encourage thumb/finger sucking.

I have a question, you recommend that babies 16 weeks and up use their fingers instead of a pacifier, how do you recommend getting them to stop sucking on their thumb or fingers when they are older? I've always been made to believe that sucking on their thumb should be avoided at all cost because it is a hard habit to break and it causes a shift in their teeth to an "overbite"
@littlezsleep
@littlezsleep 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Stephanie! As your child gets older, then you can encourage them to not suck their thumb during the day! If they are sucking their thumb for the short amount of time it takes them to fall asleep as a toddler, it not should not affect their teeth or speech.
