Jxmmy is the goat of yt nba content but i disagree with this one. have you noticed stokton and malone's games played numbers. They are two examples of players that played non stop for almost 20 years. Think about the medical technology developing. Taller players last more bc they have this advance. Also think about the evolution of 3pt line. Look at the all time top 10 points leaders and notice how many 3pts half of them have scored. You see where this is going. One day, not so far from today a guy will step in have the playing longevity of today and even more as the med will provide (combined with his athletic state). Also when the organisation will choose the 4pt line will be there. i think Lebron will probably be the first breaking the 40,000 pts limit but the next one may break the 50,000 as we already have guys like steph, luka, trae, damian etc that are capable of scoring from such an extreme distance today. So what is expected is that one guy who will have the bag, distance scorring ability, physicallity and motivation. All that are in the hands of the nba organisation. If they wanna let the next point leader to be they will make rules that lead to softer defence and more productive offence. If they don't they will make the defence even harder. At this point i think non of them are necessery as the game have the attention needed. But economic crises may lead to a bad turn. If the game needs more attention meaning more money then something extrordinare have to happened and it will. And besides the bad ref calls i dig Adam Silver's work as much as jxmy's. Nba is in good hands.

Some players get lucky with lack of injuries. Lebron is like that, as was Jordan, who in his prime, only had 1 major injury, and that kept him out for like 60 games. For whatever reason, some guys are almost immune to them, while others get bit the by injury bug.

It's kind've like that zen approach, where the only people who can actually break a record like this are people who aren't even trying for it. Kareem said he never tried to break it either, but in the process of being on so many competitive teams, and staying freakishly healthy, he accumulated the points he did.

It naturally shifted to more offense because of the rule changes. For example, making hand checking illegal in 2005. Less physical means more scoring.

There's another side to this story, that's that through out history major breakthroughs in technology and sports both occur around one another often. Like the telephone was invented by multiple people working independent of each other during a similar window. Sports a similar thing occurs where when it's time it's time and many hit the new plateau separate of one another. I love the story you've shared here and am familiar with it

The 4-minute barrier is a bit mythologized. Those within the sport considered 4 minutes to be less impossible and more overdue when Bannister made his run. If not for WWII culling and distracting a generation of athletes, plus Sweden's Anderson and Hagg receiving bans from competition, the barrier most likely falls years earlier. Until those two events the record was falling incredible fast, from above 4m 10s as late as 1931 to 4m 1s in 1944. Not exactly indicative of a record with a mental barrier. Compare that to the 100m and Long Jump, which saw Jesse Owen's records remaining unsurpassed for 20 years since the mid-1930s in disciplines that drew much heavier competition.

I think the difference there is athletic capability evolving for a chance to do the extraordinary in one race at the height of a runner’s career. The scoring record isn’t just about the game’s evolution, it take’s timing, skill, and luck to be that good, that young, and for this long. It’s like Cal Ripken’s game’s played record.

But at the same time you are both right. He's breaking and extending it at the same time but you can most def break your own record.

Can’t really include anyone who guarded Jordan because Jordan got the most preferentially biased treatment of any player in nba history. I’ve watched almost every game of Jordan’s, the amount of fouls that were called on his defender without actually touching Jordan are ridiculous. If you out a percentage on that amount I’d say about 60% of Jordan’s foul calls are phantom calls. Possibly higher.
