It's not so unusual Corey. In the heat of the moment, when some one questions your integrity it's natural to want to strike back. I mean its not like we are talking about saint Serena. Tennis players respond like that all the time and that's the point. Her reaction to being accused of cheating, in a grand slam final on an historic record breaking occation wasn't so unusual, but his punishment was. I watch tennis all the time and I can't remember anyone recieving a GAME penalty. A point deduction yes but not a whole game.

Nah, I don't believe she will. Her heated statement during the incident just shows a bit on how she truly think about herself, which basically "I am the the unbeatable that can't possibly lose", thus why she resort to unrelated issue such as having a daughter, etc. Especially after all that winnings, she feel like she's invincible. No one is better than her. Thus she's in denial and turned to blaming the umpire and doing rather.. distasteful thing. Unless after that, she got loses streak. THEN she will start to understand she's not as high as she think she is, nor is she entitled to be given leeway for the rules. Personally, I think people that can't accept that they lose are the one that needs to be beware of. If they can pick themselves up and learn what make they lose in the first place, their growth would be great compared with Selena kind of mentality. I mean 2 years after this incident, she lost at another U.S Open, Canadian Open, Auckland Open, and Wimbledon. Soo yeah.

How would you like it if someone publicly humilated you and threatened your job at work in front of hundreds of people simply for doing your job - where does that say about the persons character? In a work place that behaviour is classified as bullying. He is in his work place - we should create healthy work environments!

If a white dude behaves bad, it is ok for a black woman to do so just because he did and wasn't punished?? Something OTHER than race, could you have as an argument?? What about Naomi Osaka ? What role model are you for your daughter if you behave this way, and take the limelight of a young winner with nonsense like this? What role model are for your daughter when you lied saying your coach was giving you a thumbs up, but he said it was coaching you? If you are a black woman, you are entitled to do anything because 200 years ago some of your race people were slaves? IF the white dudes or mans in tennis in general, have bad behavior, you should do it yourself, even harder? Where were you to defend other women, players and referees, when Serena was ,mean to them?
@sab_8498

i just feel so bad for Naomi. she was so happy to play Serena Williams, her idol, who she has idolised her entire tennis career, and to see her idol throw a temper tantrum on the court, claiming sexism to downplay Naomi’s win. Serena entirely destroyed Naomi’s idealistic view of her, turned her whole world upside down. 1) When the umpire gave her a warning for her coach coaching her, he was not questioning her morals. Her coach was clearly coaching her, and he even admitted to it. Only Serena knows if she actually saw it or not, and even then, it’s clear that her coach was giving her hand signals. It’s the rules, and it’s not the umpire’s fault that Serena took the code violation as a personal attack and a questioning of her morals. 2) She broke her racket. Period. There isn’t a doubt about it, and it’s in the rules to give a warning for that. Serena can claim sexism for all she wants, but the umpire was right in doing that. 3) The game point is where I think the umpire messed up a little bit. Serena was clearly questioning his personal character and was visibly agitated and attacking him, so I can understand why the umpire was upset, but the umpire should have attempted to calm Serena down, or say, “If you continue to shout and call me names, I’m going to have to give you a game point.” But who knows if Serena would have stopped even if he said that? All in all, Serena, a 36 year old woman, threw a temper tantrum in a nationally broadcasted event because she was not winning. While Naomi, a girl half her age, handled everything so well, with elegance and grace, not badmouthing Serena one bit even though Serena managed to overshadow Naomi’s win with this controversy. Serena would have lost even if the whole umpire situation didn’t happen. She was thoroughly outplayed by Naomi, and those are just the facts. Question: If the umpire was a woman and followed the rules like the male umpire did in the match, would Serena still claim sexism? Overall, I can’t wait to see Naomi further her career. This is just the beginning for Naomi, and the beginning of the end for Serena.

So in short, you like Naomi because she assumed stereotypical gender role (position) and Serena did not? Rules don't matter if they are not applied uniformly. Every person who has been discriminated against knows this.
@sab_8498
@sab_8498 5 жыл бұрын
serolog2 Fuck no. In what way that Naomi assume a “stereotypical gender role”? That’s playing the gender card against another woman and trying to spin Williams’ faults into being Naomi’s problem, and I absolutely hate that. You have no right to say that Naomi was trying to be a submissive, quiet female and that she was “assuming stereotypical gender roles”, especially since she didn’t even know what was going on in the court because she was trying to get her head in the game and focus on winning, which is what Williams should have been doing. If you had actually read my comment instead of simply commenting just because I didn’t agree with what Williams did, you would have read my very lengthy explanation on WHY WILLIAMS WAS NOT BEING DISCRIMINATED AGAINST, but let me explain it again for you in more detail. Carlos Ramos is known for being an extreme stickler to the rules. If you want to back up your point about how the rules are not being applied uniformly, Carlos Ramos is not the man you should be looking for, and is the first example you would find of an tennis umpire that FAIRLY AND ALWAYS APPLIES THE RULES. He has penalised many players, regardless of their gender, race or ethnicity. In 2016, he penalised Andy Murray for calling his umpiring “stupid”. He also gave Novak Dojokovic a fault on his serve at the 2017 French Open for time violations, and subsequently gave him a code violation for yelling + unsportsmanlike conduct, full article if you feel like reading: www.msn.com/en-us/sports/tennis/umpire-carlos-ramos-has-history-of-being-stickler-for-violations/ar-BBN40R7 He was being extremely by-the-book and fair across all boards, no matter the gender, which is far better from being okay with everything happening on the court. the rules were being applied extremely uniformly. article to educate you on the tennis side of things: www.tennis.com/pro-game/2018/09/carlos-ramos-correct-us-open-final-serena-williams-naomi-osaka-controversy/76919/ Your blatant favouritism of Serena is showing, amigo. Look at the facts, please. Williams was being thoroughly outplayed by Naomi for most of the match, and all the code violations were justified, especially the first one, in which it was very clear that Serena’s coach was coaching her, which then spiralled into Serena throwing a hissy fit and being penalised fairly for the tantrum she threw. As a person of colour and a woman, it disgusts me that she’s using the gender card to downplay the loss of control of her temper because she was losing, and trying to turn it on the umpire simply because he was following the rules. If Serena was winning despite the code violations, I can guarantee you 100% that she would not have made this as huge of a deal as it is now, and overshadow Naomi’s win, who is the person we should be focusing on right now. Naomi just beat a player half her age, with far more experience than she has, and with far more elegance, grace and poise than Serena could ever hope to have. Serena being a sore loser is really not what I expected for her, and I’m thoroughly disappointed, which is definitely not even close to what Naomi must be feeling right now, to see your idol throw a hissy fit right before your eyes because you’re beating her at her game.

If there was someone who should've apologized it was Serena for showing tantrums (sore loser), poor sportsmanship (no class) and conduct unbecoming of a professional athlete and supposedly a role model & great champion! Totally stole the spotlight from Naomi and ruined her moment! Was never a fan of Serena...never will be!

Williams was so DESPERATE for attention (as always) that she just HAD to have her moment in the limelight. Never mind that she brazenly called the umpire a "thief" and that he "stole" a game from her. Never mind that she thinks she's so damned B-I-G in the sport that she alone gets to decide who Carlos Ramos umpires in the future. Never mind the fact that she reduced her vastly superior opponent to an embarrassed, hurt, shell-shocked, devastated onlooker on what SHOULD have been the greatest day of this young kid's life. No, it was all about the pathetic 'Serena Williams Show' and her galactic-sized ego. The woman should face the harshest penalties possible for her shameful behaviour, but no, this is Serena Williams we're talking about, accordingly she'll probably walk away smelling of roses (eventually) because she's obviously bigger than the game of tennis itself. In her opinion, that is. I'm so sorry for poor Naomi Osaka - her moment of triumph was sadly obliterated by a narcissist with no grace or decorum whatsoever.

Osaka idolized the wrong tennis player. I've watched Williams from the beginning. Whenever she doesn't get her way she throws a tantrum. Williams' coach admitted that he was coaching Williams from the stands. The excuse: "Everybody does it." The USTA should enact a new rule: "If you get caught cheating these are the penalties:... " And the USTA should decide what those penalties are, not the umpires. Penalties should be the same for men and women. Take deciding the penalties out of the hands of the umpires & then neither Williams nor anyone else can stamp their childish feet and whine, "No fair!"

I don't think anyone would argue the case that she was right in what she did, that's not the point at all. Is it understandable why she reacted the way that she did, that is the real question. I think so. She may never get the chance to equal Margaret Courts 24 Grand Slam winning record again. Not at 36 years of age. The no coaching rule is a stupid rule that’s why they are going scrap it altogether. It’s not like Serena was getting an unfair advantage that needed to be stopped. The umpire decided to make an unimportant decision at a very important time when experience should have told him to excise discretion, but instead he chose to act like a “JOBS WORTH” i.e... “an official who upholds petty rules even at the expense of common sense.” History was on course to write itself... had Jobs Worth not intervened. .

Therefore, Aidan Linehan, you are correct that *Serena Williams herself* "completely ruined Osaka's career defining moment." However, I am stating this for people who think the "coaching" conduct violation was the problem. I'm not sure if you are one of those Aidan. But it wasn't the conduct violation. It was her losing her cool, which gave her the point and game violations. For such a superstar in pro tennis, (and Serena Williams IS one), she certainly does not understand the rules, even though she said she did.

I remember at Wimbledon she won a point in a game against Angelique Kerber by hitting the tennis ball to her and didn't even apologize. If Serena was winning her coach would have no reason to try to coach her thus Serena would not need to be critical of Ramos. Her reaction was mostly do to the fact that she was losing and that is not good because in the past and recently she has had a problem being bested.

Even with all those insulting comments and bad behavior by Serena, the crowd and Katrina Adams, Naomi apologized for winning because she knew if she were in the stand she would've been rooting for Serena. I am glad to see so many Americans and non-Americans applauding for Naomi's grace. So THANK YOU! Can someone please tell me name(s) of Grand Slam champions who were able to put her/him self in the crowd's shoes and think rationally why they behaved in the way they did? I'm Japanese and we were taught to be humble and gracious from childhood. Her mother clearly kept the tradition. Naomi even thanked the crowd for watching and thanked Serena for playing and took a bow. HOW SO JAPANESE OF HER! BTW: Naomi completely outplayed Serena, just saying.

She DID get coaching, and she SAW the signals from her coach, otherwise how would she know about the thumbs up signal she mentioned in her speech to the umpire right after receiving the code violation for coaching? Her coach had his thumbs up while moving his hands to the front (meaning "go Forward, go to the net" Everybody in tennis knows that), he also nods to Serena as acknowledgement, watch the video. The umpire told her nothing about the signals. So, HOW DID SHE KNOW? For God's sake! She SAW it, and after getting penalized she tried to turn the tables on him.

Shocking, shocking behaviour. Things can be said in the heat of the moment which are semi understandable but this was sustained over 10 mins. I can’t call someone a thief (falsely) walking down the street without repercussions. Finally, “you will never be on a court of mine again”. Tennis will be around a long time after her. She isn’t above the game despite what people say to her face. If she did the correct thing and said she was sorry etc then it would go a long way to helping the situation. After all he’s somebody’s son as Serena likes to remind us about her daughter.

I have to agree....Serena was behaving irrationally. It is one thing to disagree openly about a decision that was made. It is another thing to deride, berate and insult an umpire excessively, slam your racket on the ground and dang near cried to the refs when you don't have your way. She behaved unprofessionally from my eyes. And yes, other players did the same and were penalized equally. It had nothing to do with her sex. It had everything to do with her being angry that her ass was being served by a 20-year-old.

Except she has come back from several matches due to her talent. She was frustrated by not playing better. The umpire gave her two stupid code violations - one for coaching, which should have been a soft warning like all other umpires give - and the second it calling him a thief due to that, when men like Andy Roddick and James Blake have admitted they said a lot worse. Should have been only one code violation - racquet abuse.

But I'm kind of surprised that more people are not saying she is black at all. As far as I'm concerned, she is a New Yorker and should be representing the U.S.A.! What I find really weird is that her defence was founded on the assertion that she was a victim of male privilege. The absurdity is that throughout her spectacle what she really clearly manifested was another form of privilege - hers! She was relying on the privilege of her status within the athletic community as the de facto reigning queen of woman's tennis. She illustrated that very clearly via her indignation, her complete lack of respect for the umpire, the willingness not only to lie, but to reinforce the lie with an assertion of moral superiority. It wasn't that her dialogue with the umpire was heated or emotional or even offensive. It was the complete lack of respect. She behaved as if the rules did not apply to her. Despite the allegations of racial undertones, I really think Mark Knight nailed it with his cartoon. 'Can't you just let her win?' seems extremely appropriate. I honestly believe if Osaka wasn't half black, she would have pulled that one out as well. It was disgraceful.

The very first argument is really all one needs: it was supposed to be just a warning, and a correct one. All that Serena and her coach had to do was stop doing it, and the match would proceed uneventfully. However, Serena chose to throw all her economic and social might against the blue collar umpire to satisfy her proportionally huge ego. And this what really matters: she chose that course action. The problem was, the umpire didn't get intimidated by her. That only caused her to become more infuriated. The rest is a sad history. Serena is the ONLY one to blame in this horror story. So many people trying to make the umpire responsible, totally or partially. No way. He just did what he was expected to do.

Everyone except Serena and her die hard fans will agree that she was out of order in every respect. The next question is will the WTA take the appropriate action for bringing the game into disrespect, especially as Serena has form for threatening umpires and linespeople when things are not going her way. Sad that Serena played every card going in an attempt to justify her behaviour, meanwhile she showed zero respect to her opponent and some might say that this was a cynical move to unhinge the young and polite Naomi.
