Lisa Carlin takes a look at the updated UEFA Women's Champions League bracket after all Leg 1 Quarterfinal matches have been completed. The group zero in on the Barcelona vs Brann match as this was expected to be a blowout with Barca being the favorites to win the UWCL, but Brann put up a fight and only lose 2-1. The group then discuss Benfica's current form, underdogs from the outset but now punching above their weight, putting historic side Lyon on their back heels. Then, a discussion about Chelsea and what it's going to take to finally win the elusive UWCL title for the team and head coach Emma Hayes. And finally, a look at who the US women's team drew for the Olympics this summer and the announcement of the new Summer Cup Tournament which sees NWSL teams face off against Liga MX Femenil sides.

Chelsea are missing attacking players, Sam Kerr, Mia Fishel. If Mayra Ramirez can hit form there is a chance. But she has not yet settled into Chelsea’s playing style. So realistically, they have no chance.

That tournament format for the Summer Cup is the worst thing I’ve ever heard of. The team that wins the toughest group could be left out of the semis simply because they had to fight through a group of death and didn’t end up with as many points as the team that won the group of cake. You cannot have a format that discards a group winner. It would be better to leave out the bottom four NWSL teams and cut out a group. Simply ridiculous. Or have five in each group. What if it turns out that SD, ACFC, and Bay FC happen to be the best 3 teams in the NWSL this year and CA are the best Liga MX side, they brutalize each other in the group and the winner of that group has the fewest points of the five winners. Then the best team in the tournament doesn’t even get a chance at the trophy because of being in the best group. That’s the opposite of how tournaments should work.

Barca is very organized and clinical in the box. Brann did a terrific job of defending against that.

Macario seems to be brought in towards the tail end of every match, but fits in a lot of activity in the short time.: whether it is keeping the ball, taking it up and making progress with it and sending in services and passes. In WSL matches also she seems to be acquitting herself very capably and seems to be specialising herself in doing set pieces, which was what I thought of her even before she had her injury. If she can put the ball on a dime, as Ashley Lawrence does, she has it made. She has pretty much all of the rest of the game all stitched up: All the moves.

Lindsey Horan was slow to come to the realisation of what was happening around her, but then in the second half of the game against Benfica, she was all business. At first she was astonished at the audacity of the Lisbon Team, who were playing like she-punks, with no respect for their elders, but then gave as good as she got. All credit to her, she still thought the better of retaliating, as she did in the Netherlands match in the World Cup or against the Brann match, recently. She concentrated on her football and getting results. Her ball to Dabritz, which resulted in the goal was exquisite. We should have no fears about her. She knows what to do in the return match.

Perhaps I had better put down my observations vis a vis, the UEFA Champion;s Q'tr Finals, just having taken place, especially as it applies to the some of the American born players, who might potentially be of interest, to American selectors, in the future. Let me say right away that Lily Yohannes is a write off at this stage of life. Ajax must have thought a lot of her when they brought her in, but actually she is not up to playing in the top flight yet. She is slow to take off, does not anticipate the action well and frankly not very effective. She must wait a while and mature. Korbin Albert did not have much to do, in her match, because the ball was not routed a lot to her. She seemed to wait for attention but executed herself well, when the occasion arose. She blocked her end of it very well.

Obesession over Emma Hayes is insane. Barca and Lyon had two bad games. I will still take Lyon over chelsea and in semis chelsea must win against barca at Bridge because at home barca are unbeaten for 5 years in european football.

I could tell you the same about PSG. Don't sleep on PSG, it's not a given for Lyon if they meet in the semis.

I agree Emma Hayes is overrated.. there are many female football coaches that are far superior. With a decent coach, Chelsea may well become the top European women’s team.
