Will Filipinos speak Spanish again?
The Return of Spanish to the Philippines, or even more accurate to say THE RESURRECTION OF SPANISH IN THE PHILIPPINES. This video will discuss how Spanish was spoken in the Philippines as an official language for more than 350 years, and how after having been banned, and virtually prohibited it's now coming back, returning to the Philippines.
Check our 2nd video about Spanish in the FILIPINAS! Click the link below:
• Chavacano: The Spanish...
There is a saying which states that "The Filipino people will never be foreigners in Spain" due the the strong connections between The Philippines and the Spanish speaking world. There are more than 4000 Spanish words in Tagalog, and there is still Chavacano ever present in the Philippines. The history, the traditions, the ways people view life is almost the same. Little by little the Philippines is reconnecting with the Hispanic world.

My ancestors both sides were Latin bloods predominantly Spanish so I grew up in a Hispanic household of my grandparents. Tried being taught the basics of the language by my grandma at an early age but then due to the itrelevance of the language here and no one else to talk to, its difficult to be fluent or having basic Communication skills. Vocabulary and being aware of what Spanish words are in Filipino is a given though. Would Love to learn to speak Spanish fluently.

To be totally sure if you actually have Spanish blood, then take a DNA test. I thought my family was Spanish by blood also, as the elders spoke Spanish. I found out it wasn't Spanish blood, but for some reason Italian blood, although they did come from Barcelona.

@@alanguages I'm pretty sure my cousins and aunts still got the BASQUE blood, they have a nose that is distinguishably like the nose of people from that area. Most of them also have brown eyes and tall height. They are so pale and rarely get a tan. I only got the skin from this side of the family coz I look like my dad who got his native features from his dad not his mom who is also part Spanish. His gay brother luckily got the height and the features. I could say he's really pretty now. 😂 I guess even the dna test would say I have very little Spanish blood now as it also dictates the features you dlget from each parents

The only reason why I want it back is because I don’t want Philippines to be too Americanized. Hispanic culture is very beautiful and colorful, and it sucks when Americanization happens making everything so modern and grey. Plus it makes sense for it to become the National language since it has been used for 300 years, has been used by different tribes in the Philippines with different languages as a lingua-franca to communicate with each other, and has heavily influenced Filipino languages. For the modern Philippines, Spanish should make a comeback not only for cultural and historical reasons, but also for economical reasons as Spanish is already the 2nd most widely spoken language in the world and can really attract more investors from Spain, Latin America, and USA.

I have been creating my family tree, tracing my roots recently. But the problem was all records, birth and death certificates were written in Spanish. The only way I could read them is to learn Spanish. Later on, I found how I already know so much words than I ever knew. Lesson learned: If people don't know their history, they get disconnected from their past. If they disconnected from their past, they may make the same mistakes and may start all over again. Spanish is our connection to our past. If we forget it, we will always feel that missing piece in all of us Filipinos.

I have always known about the Filipino and South American connections but I've always thought they were superficial. Then I read the works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Isabel Allende, and Octavio Paz. I was genuinely surprised at how intimately familiar their stories are - it was almost frightening. I have never been to South America but the books were so relatable they might as well have happened anywhere in my country. To this day, we Filipinos are still trying to make sense of our post-colonial identity and one benefit of relearning spanish is that we can connect with other nations who shared that post-colonial experience.

Spanish subject was dissolved when I entered college. It was unfortunate for me. I really want to learn Spanish language. The only Spanish poem required to us to memorize was Jose Rizal's " Mi Ultimo Adios". I think it is now time for the Philippine government to include in the curriculum the learning of Spanish language not because of its historical and cultural roots but also because of Spanish being one of the. most widely spoken languages in the world. Filipinos are found everywhere in the world because they are working in other countries so they will always meet Spanish speaking people. You are correct to say that it has also economic advantage if Filipinos learn to speak Spanish.

I’m personally a proponent of the Spanish language being a part of the Filipino identity. I’m all for being our own people but I also believe in the advantages of being able to speak Spanish alongside English. And I say this not just as a Filipino but also as an American. This is most especially true for me personally because as someone who lives in the United States (particularly in Hawaii), there’s been a noticeable growth of Latino presence in Hawaii which is something I’ve never really seen before and I’ve lived here my whole life. I’ve been around other Filipinos (both Americanized and from the motherland), Japanese, Hawaiian, Caucasian, African-American, etc. But I was hardly ever around Latinos until recent years in my life. And since I began working alongside Latinos at work, I now have the view of seeing Latinos as my metaphorical cousins. One of my good friends, who happens to be Mexican, also shares a similar view toward Filipinos where she sees Filipinos as her own cousins. I actually know some basic Spanish words and phrases. Though I’m still studying the language to this day and it’s not an easy experience. I even had the rare opportunity to make use of it once or twice. One instance was when a guy from Chile approached me and immediately spoke to me in Spanish. It’s likely he mistook me for a Latino due to the color of my light-brown skin. I actually said this following phrase to him which consequently gave me the most hilariously confused face I’ve ever seen in my life. I said: “Lo siento, señor. No sé mucho Español. No soy Latino. Soy Filipino.” And then he just had that look on his face like he literally had no idea what he just heard from me. Which was really funny to me even to this day. And even my Mexican friend told me that Spanish was actually decent. I’m also writing a storybook that has a Filipino man and a Mexican woman as the main characters though they’re both native to the U.S. states of California and Nevada. Although in the story, California and Nevada has become one country centuries after an apocalyptic event took place. The two are shown to have romantic moments that are subtle but also often teased but at the same time, they’re strained by the actions of either person. It’s an action-thriller and so far my Mexican friend loves the female character because in some ways, she resonates with her. Anyway sorry for this long comment. I just wanted to add my two cents on this because I firmly believe that we Filipinos can be our own people but at the same time we can have one hell of a connection with so many others if we’re able to speak Spanish alongside English and our native/ancestral tongue. Is it a challenge? Yes. Is it impossible? Hell no.

i am filipino, ALL I CAN SAY WE PREFER SPANISH CULTURE THAN ANYTHING ELSE, Spanish unites the whole philippines. some filipinos are still BITTER in spain, but most accepted and embraced the culture spain gave us, including my whole family. I Rememeber my lolo and lola (abuelo, abuela in spain) or grandma and grandpa in english) they speak spanish fluently and telling stories about philippines colonized by spain was one of the best years philippines had. their official language is spanish, their houses and the way they dress is very elegant, and as a whole philippines back then are just soooooo Spanish. the stories back then that spain abused some filipinos is slightly true BUT! those are just some of the abusive friars and soldiers that spanish government sent, and not knowing that some of their locals are abusing the filipinos. SPAIN send them to develop, secure, protect and spread chirstianity in philippines, because philippines is a province of Spain back then. now 2019, little by little filipinos wants to learn spanish again, there is a lot of pages in Facebook about learning spanish created by filipinos helping each other to learn spanish, also some schools already here are bringing back the spanish classes again after it was removed in mid 80's. filipinos can't deny their spanish roots and cultures because it shows and it keep us on what we are right now. we filipinos also treats latinos and spain as our brothers, and south east asian countries as our cousins. can't wait to travel to spain soon and latin america on 2020 and celebrate our same culture! VIVA FILIPINAS! VIVA ESPANA! VIVA HISPANIDAD!

I swear, no one told me what to do or anything, but as someone who speaks a local language in the Philippines with 40-60% spanish in it's vocabulary I just naturally went by and started looking at these videos where they talk about the spanish language in the Philippines, I just got naturally interested on learning the language, it's like a missing part of my existence, I know growing up that i am part spanish, my grandfather is pure castillan-spanish and most of my family all look like westerners, often teased as "mestizo" for being white skinned I didn't really mind it that much, but as I grew up and seeing all these spanish related movies, series everywhere. I just naturally went and see how really the same my language is to spanish, and indeed it has a lot of similarities, words that I hear on a daily basis are in spanish, so I did my own research, tried to learn slowly about the language, and now, even if I am still not that fluent, I could understand spanish sentences by my own, not all but most of it, if I can't understand a word or phrases, well there is google for easy translation. hahaha but still i think the best way to learn spanish is to speak with a local spanish speaker, which i don't have. hahahaha but its okay, atleast i am trying slowly but surely. hehehe

During my mom's time, Spanish was a compulsory subject in certain grade levels in elementary and it is also introduced as electives in college or university level. It's just around 1970s that Spanish in schools begun to decline, but don't loose hope, for in the 21st Century it is having a slow comeback. Slow but still an important comeback. Maybe in the year 2030 or previous, Spanish will be compulsory in all schools and all levels as a separate and new language subject. I don't see Spanish anymore as a language from our previous oppressors and colonizers, but as a modern language of opportunities for work, travel, tourism, and connecting with the rest of the Spanish-speaking world through trade, culture, education, tourism, arts, mass media, entertainment, social media, etc..

If we speak Spanish and English (2 of the most spoken languages in the world), it will give us an advantage to other SEA countries. When I was in college, it was compulsory for us to undergo 6 semesters of the Spanish language that I was quite surprised to find out that a lot of words we were speaking were actually Spanish-derived. I studied at the University of Santo Tomas that was founded by the Spaniards in 1600 and is the oldest university in Asia, besides older than the oldest university of the USA, which is Harvard U. I took up Journalism at the University of Santo Tomas, that today I'm writing a book titled "English, Tagalog, Ilocano, Bicolano, Cebuano, Ibanag and Gaddang Dictionary plus Dictionary of Almost Two Thousand Spanish-Derived Filipino Words". Filipinos love Spain and the Spanish language (My husband and I have been to Spain 3 times. My ancestors were from Cataluna, Spain while my husband's were from Basque).

Our teacher in Spanish they required us to memorize the last letter of Jose Rizal our national heroes originates in Spanish language. Now its really a big advantages for Filipinos that we can be multi bilingual speakers. Isn't Amazing? I think its not too late to learned Spanish and yet still in our mother tongue as broken Spanish words. Most of the time we communicate combined 3 languages tagalog+spanish+english at the same time. Example "Ano oras na? Mga alas dyes ng morning." Great combination 3 languages at the same time. Filipinos can learned Spanish language quick and fast.
