Thanks to car Vertical for sponsoring this video (my first YT sponsor!) and you can use my code BENCOLLINSDRIVES to claim a 10% discount on their platform when you do a search for your next four wheeled dream: www.carvertical.com/gb/landin...
When Freddy @Tavarish bought a $2 MILLION flood-damaged Mclaren P1 Hypercar I THOUGHT HE WAS NUTS. The car had basically been flushed down the toilet by a hurricane, floated (yes actually floated) down the street and banged around with some palm trees until rescue workers cleared the scene. Its final resting place was actually on top of a toilet.
To make matters MUCH worse - the Mclaren P1 is a hybrid which means it’s full of battery packs which in reality are just 100’s of AA size batteries linked together and we all know how much batteries enjoy salt water.
Not surprisingly, the former owner took one look at his former pride and glory and decided to sell it… to Freddy… for $600,000… In a nice nod to the sponsor of this video, Fred did at least ascertain from Car Vertical that the Mclaren only had 300 miles on the clock - even if some of them were submerged. He then decided to restore the car himself.
Just who is Freddy Tavarish anyway?
“Tavarish” as he’s known is a KZfaqr with behemoth status on the interweb. I got to meet him at an event earlier this year and he struck me as a high-functioning, car loving, big teddy bear. As a writer he cut his mustard at outlets like Jalopnik and his car restoration / modification projects have gained him 2.7 million subscribers on his KZfaq channel @tavarish
Mclaren Automotive, on the other hand, has a team of the world’s leading engineering minds and has been building groundbreaking cars since 1963. The Mclaren F1 designed by Gordon Murray scorched the Earth in 1992 with hitherto unknown poise, purpose and speed. Its original sale price of $800,000 now commands a tag of $20 Million.
Mclaren has won numerous F1 titles and does this for a living. The Mclaren P1, with its combo of electric and combustion driven power, was another seminal piece of pinnacle engineering. Not only was the optimised hybrid power the first of its kind at Hypercar level, it also continued Mclaren’s evolution of hydraulic suspension which has to be experienced to be believed.
You ride on a cushion of fluid, more supple than the traditional spring and shock solution of other machines. The dynamic control of that system is active and requiring constant adjustment by the car’s brain - which also got flooded. Oh.. and I did I mention active aerodynamics too.
The original P1 weighed in at 1547KG and applied a combined total of 903 BHP to the rear wheels from its twin-turbo 3.8 litre V8 engine and single electric motor. With 600KG of downforce, that was enough to set the bar extremely high. But according to Tavarish - that can be improved.. by ditching the hybrid system altogether, stripping 200KG of weight in the process and enhancing the existing engine to boost the power output.
It's a fascinating proposition. Can Freddy pull it off..? I truly hope so - because at SEMA he told me that as soon as it’s ready.. he wants ME to drive what could be the world’s fastest Mclaren.
For more info on what Tavarish is up to check out his videos here: • Rebuilding A Flooded $...

Ben; well done asking the questions around safety in a subtle and respectful way. No doubt Tavarish as put a ton of blood, sweat and tears (not to mention money) into this project and we have have a ton of respect for him. Having said that, I think it would be easy to over look certain aspects like how a stock suspension set up would handle a lighter car with a drastically different and more powerful torque curve. Attempting to build the fastest P1 is a lofty goal and I have full confidence that Tavarish can make it happen. But it’s always good to have others, especially professionals such as yourself, offer a different perspective as a sanity check. Thanks for the great videos!

Brilliant. I cannot wait to see this car ... let alone have an opportunity to drive it ... I know we agreed to do a video some time ago and when my mam died I simply gave up on You Tube .. but following these builds and your content I genuinely feel better about my self and have a desire to create some content again. A genuie drive, genuine petrolhead, and enthusiast talking about one of the GREATEST cars of all time ... and unbelievably ... I think Tavarish will make a better P1 ... I was initially skeptical and wanted to think Tavarish was a bit arrogant to assume he could improve on this car, but after hearing him talk it seems that he’s knowledgeable and considerate of Mclaren’s engineering and history. I now think he will make a competent build using the “correct” hardware while paying homage to the car’s spiritual predecessor. A true reimagination.

@@ripvanwinkle2002 They tell him no because of liability issues - he has never had the carbon tubs on this or his blue one x-rayed for micro cracks which in carbon can be devastating. If they blatantly said sure to him - and it does disintegrate, it opens them up to a possible lawsuit. Nothing he is doing in this build is ground breaking at all in terms of hotrodding exotics though, underground racing has been doing crazy exotic builds for over a decade the only difference is that freddy is on youtube (not even working on it himself) and used a salvaged car. Also hotrodding is dying out as we know it, eventually EV swaps will the be new LS swap and there won't be much if any tuning happening as it is not nearly as accessible.

@@jeremyglover5541 Right enough, I have adjusted the clumsy wording above. If you go to Freddy's channel he has received much vitriol from those who would say a P1 is not a P1 without the hybrid system. I disagree for the reasons Freddy outlines: it will be 200kg lighter, it will improve power to weight ratio and it should yield a better car for his purposes.

@@Gorbyrev yeah he has, but those guys are just keyboard warriors. He already made a video (as did Rich rebuilds) going into detail the reasons for removing it, but no doubt there will always be a bunch of haters who just want to talk crap and make it sound like they know what they are talking about.

I mean the fact he has valvoline onboard, as well as the original turbo manufacturers and engine builders ... also taking it to a wind tunnel etc? and now the STIG and putting it against an original P1? this is no backyard garage build. Freddy may not actually BE an engineer, but he sure is surrounding himself with them.

I do admire Tav for taking these things on. I know it's being done in the semi unreal world of KZfaq, but even so it is quite the undertaking. It's fun and interesting stuff to follow! Good luck Tavarish! Plus after the stuff BC drove for Top Gear I should think he'd have few hesitations getting into this! What do we think of BC driving this and borrowing Jay Leno's P1 for a stock comparison? Oh and fetch out the F1 too for a high speed airing?

did you not watch the video? Tavarish already said in the video that they have a stock P1 to drive on the same day to compare.

Freddie is a Guy who will become a You Tube legend if not already. What I thought was nuts was the fact that He borrowed the $2M to buy this wrecked P1. Cool Guy or what !!

The spiritual successor to the McLaren F1 is the Gordon Murray T.50. The hybrid drive was there for a reason. It was the first Hypercar due to this system, which provided instant torque and basically nullified the turbo lag. It was made to be a scalpel, not a sledge hammer. To be balanced in every way, even in terms of weight distribution. What Tavarish has now, is just another car with a lot of horsepower but no sophistication. All the people and fan boys who are mumbling about power to weight ratio and outdated hybrid systems, don't know what those systems do in the first place. Some of them think is about gas mileage. There is a reason why the all time lap record on the Nürburgring was set by a hybrid. Tavarish talked so much about rebuilding the system and many real car guys got extremely exited about it. It has never been done before. Mclarens have been rebuilt but never a P1. People said, it can't be done,...and a big reason for them saying that, was because of the hybrid system. Tavarish proved them right, but not without making us waste our time on his videos up until the point he announced the "big plot twist."

New subscriber here, I've no idea where they could speed test a car at 270mph but would it be ironic for the straight line speed test at Salt flats? Wherever it's tested it's gonna be epic. Nice one Ben.

Go watch the texas mile - they run it on a airport so they can get speeds that high. That or they will run it on the same stretch the one to one did.
