The High Court of Justice in Israel has started hearing petitions demanding that it annul a cabinet resolution that enabled the state to avoid drafting ultra-Orthodox Yeshiva students into the army. The Movement for Quality Government in Israel - which has campaigned for decades for young Haredi men to be drafted - filed petitions to the court in July last year arguing that the government violated the rule of law. Hundreds of flag-waving Israelis protested outside the Supreme Court which is hearing the matter. The law put the Netanyahu government in a difficult spot as it has to call up more reservists while exempting others from military duties. In this episode of Decode, Zakka Jacob explains why Yeshiva students get this exemption.
