Will this old engine that came out of a broken down bus run again after the blower and governor failure? Mci9 bus needs a replacement engine. Cooked and over heated detroit diesel was junk. We bought a cheap replacement engine and are rolling the dice. Will it start and run?

Must have been a relief to hear it run, and find out it is likely as advertised. Finding a good engine can't be a simple thing.

When I was in high school vo-tech for diesel shop, our teacher drilled into us so much about engine runaways, we were pretty much terrified of it. One of the most impressive steel plates I’d ever seen in the dyno cell.

Well, if you've never attended the scene of a runaway 2-stroke, all I can say is, it's unnerving, to say the very least, and depending on what shape your nerves are in, it can be terrifying all right. It's a combination of unexpected, unprepared, unrehearsed, and unglued, all smacked together into a very intense package. Natural instinct is to get away from the intense noise, and also the instinct for self-preservation, because newbies would expect the engine to grenade at any second. Trust me, there is nobody laughing while it's happening. The nervous laughter comes once the sucker is under control, namely extinguished. And yes, if you let it go too long, damage can, and will occur. Best to do anything you can to avoid letting it happen before you start it up, unless of course, you don't care about it and have no money invested.

I am replacing a jump t timing chain in a Honda Turbo Civic. The honda turns 8,000 rpms and is smaller than your blower . I am doing tiny crap compared to you. Roller cams and a broken T/Chain "imagine the carnage'. Crank bolt is around a 1/2 ton torque to loosen. Or so it seems. More oil in your air filters than this Honda contains 3 & 3/4 qts when full I have had my hands on at least 200 blow thru jugs. In one summer the City Gov. Had all Detroit Diesels rebuilt (many many many jugs) AKA boat anchors . We would deck the blocks and line bore the cam slots.

So my big question is: What's gonna happen to the old engine? I know you said it can be rebuilt, it's just cost prohibitive for the owner but is he gonna try selling it as a project or is it being sent as a core back to the previous owner of that new 6V?

I can't speak for used stuff from U-pull yards and what not, but as far as I know, Detroit Diesel is still committed to supplying parts for all of its engines. New, and re-man. I believe all of the 2-stroke legacy engines (Series-53, Series-71, Series-92, and Series-149) are lumped under the MTU-Solutions website.

If the old blower had catastrophic damage doesn’t it mean the pieces that damaged the blower went into the engine?
@BusGreaseMonkey
@BusGreaseMonkey 4 ай бұрын
A few very small pieces are probably in the oil pan. But everything is on the drain side. The intake we clean out and all debris was caught on the after cooler do no parts got ingested
@kleetus92

Dumb question, but if this engine had a hose clamp go through the blower, doesn't that mean the pieces of it got launched into the airboxes and are potentially soon to be in the cylinders?

Stupid question but why does it run a turbo and supercharger
@sparksalot4950
@sparksalot4950 3 ай бұрын
These 2 stroke motors are called squeezes cause the turbo puts air on top of the pistons and the blower puts air under the pistons and the oil gets squeezed out of all the openings!!! At least that is what a mechanic explained to me about these motors many years ago.
