Refresh rate matters, we all know that, but the real question is how much does it matter?
The widespread switch to 144hz was a revolutionary, landmark moment in esports culture, not to mention the gaming industry as a whole. And as refresh rates began to double and triple, people began to talk about seeing some diminishing returns.
But what if those returns weren't as diminishing as you think?
If you've used a 360 hertz monitor, you know it's a huge step up from 240. And ASUS have raised the bar even higher with a 540 hertz super monitor.
We built a computer strong enough to put it through the paces, and we tried to run Valorant, Overwatch and Counter-Strike 2 at the highest frame rates possible.
So how was it? And will pros switch to the fastest monitor on the market?

@@sbuuby Not really. You just need a 7800x3d and a decent GPU like an rtx 4070. CPU prices are really good it is just GPU prices. A 4070 costs 500 usd so it ain't that bad for max fps possible. You can play CSGO, Fortnite, overwatch, league of legends easily but for games like COD, Apex and halo not so much 540hz gaming but 360hz is possible at 1080p. Fortnite is the only current gen game capable of easily reaching over one thousand FPS in a real game (Not consistently as you average around 700fps. ). It is easier to run then minecraft! And next minute you turn up those graphics you get, Nanite, Lumen, Raytracing, DLSS etc. An rtx 4090 struggles to get a 60fps 1% low experience with settings maxed out at 4k! With DLSS you can of course expect better double the FPS then that but it is crazy that you can play at 1080p 240+fps on a gtx 1050 core i5 8600 set up!

60-120 > 144 is pretty huge. 120/144 > 240 makes you realize how much fast motion you've been missing in close quarters 240 > 360 removes a lot of residual motion blur of large objects. 360 > 540 makes fast moving text and smaller objects a lot more clear. That's also likely coupled with a faster response time (GtG / color transition) from the monitor. The reduced input latency is also another bonus. Overwatch 2 is already a game you can play at 540 hz pretty reliably on a high end PC. It's going to be hard to sell 1000 hz in comparison but this is pretty nice as it is.

idk, when you consider that your eyes work based on light activating sensors I think we'll still see upgrades for many decades to come. even if our eye does happen to reach a limit where it literally can't perceive if a single frame flashed completely black, theoretically you should still be able to add light. kinda hard to predict how stuff like that will interact with our biology, can you imagine fade blends but it's not a editing trick mashing two videos together but literally both images that your brain ends up blending together. or maybe it will just be visual mush and there will be zero point to going higher again who knows. honestly I desperately hope tech keeps progressing at this speed and nothing terrible happens because if so we're in for some of the coolest experiences imaginable, like genuinely full VR high fidelity movies

The reason why optimum recommended 240 hz instead of 360hz is because at that time, the 360hz monitors didn't had good enough response times to keep up with the refresh rate and therefore ghosting appeared to the point that 360hz panels looked more blurry than fast response times 240hz panels. The Asus 540hz has definitely good enough response times for 540hz, the new Zowie 540hz actually doesn't. Sometimes it it fast enough but not all of the time like the Asus

It would be nice if people mentioned pixel response time when they were talking refresh rated. There might be a 240 or 360 Hz screen out there that have less perceived motion bluer because the pixel response time is faster. Can this monitor do black frame insertion at 540hz? Cause that might also reduce perceived motion and only require 270 fps. That might also be a solution for people that are not too sensitive when it comes to smoothness.

That's all remotely high refresh rate oleds and they're a literal order of magnitude faster but are currently capped at 240hz with 360hz ones coming q1 2024. Currently 240hz oleds already nearly traded blows with the 360hz lcds in motion performance but this debate is already pretty talked about by most gaming hardware enthusiasts. I suspect with lcds response times also further becoming an issue for fully transitioning pixels before the frame has to update again (why people were switching back to 240hz fron 360hz too, it was too slow), games much less consistently stay above 540 fps even with the best hardware and the latency of a purely faster response time will all make the battle even closer this time around. Currently tho this is the fastest response time lcd period and by a pretty decent margin at that

Yeah man it can do bfi. Even without it the image persistence is only 2ms due to the pixel response times of TN actually being able to switch almost every color at speeds lower than 2ms. So combine the already low image persistence with bfi and it’s crazy. It’s crt like in my opinion. Of course this “crt” like experience isn’t as possible when you lower the refresh. Imo while Im sure crazy refresh rates with the power backing it up would be amazing I'm not sure if its worth on its pros due to the lack of content ever reaching that height. Seeing as most content besides PC gaming would potentially benefit from this I'm sure putting a 60hz signal from one of the latest consoles or even retro consoles scaled would have undesired effects (and potentially worse latency than other monitors at lower refresh rates. My highest is an ultrawide 1440p 165hz and I think that'll be my limit for a long time.

It's meant for competitive titles where you can reach high FPS. It also lowers latency though when not gaming at that FPS because it presents the image faster. Even if you cap your frames at 250 on a 500hz monitor it will be lower latency than 250 fps at 250hz. You can use it for 60hz too if you make a custom resolution can keep the pixel clock high with large vertical totals, that removes the latency effect of running it at a lower refresh rate.

I think another thing people don't always talk about is how slow some of these "fast gaming" monitors actually are on a pixel response level. There are lots of VA panels in particular out there with 16ms+ responses from black that cause terrible smearing and other dark colors also have very slow times as you pan around. This means black sections of the screen end up smearing all over the place at about 60hz, like phone lines against sky and stuff like that, and it doesn't matter how often the screen is actually refreshing, this pixel time is actually what makes things blurry a lot of the time and is often why these 300+ hz monitors just don't feel right. You aren't actually achieving that refresh rate on anything but a hardware reporting level. Once OLEDs with their 1ms pixel responses can do 240 hz regularly this will be the go to. Its not necessary to go any higher when there is no blur to combat. This is also part of why some people with perhaps a better IPS can feel a difference between 240 and 360, and to others it just doesn't feel right. Product by product there will be potentially a lot of hidden differences related to pixel responses from different colors. There is also another factor which is overdrive overshoot where manufacturers will cause inverted blacks by increasing voltage on the matrix to force faster color switching on a panel that can't actually do what's on the box, which still makes things very blurry and mess up colors a lot. Note that the GTG (grey to grey) times that manufacturers boast about for response times is actually a best case scenario for any panel and that's the reason they advertise it. Certain colors switching around can have vastly different response times than a 1ms GTG response. My 120hz OLED already feels and looks way more smooth than my 240 lcd ever did as the lack of blur makes things in motion that much more clear.

This is a TN with about 2ms response times so yes oleds will still be fast enough with their 0.3ms response times to punch above their refresh rates but this one isnt so bad. That being said the 480hz oleds that just came out do moderately beat this 540hz TN monitor in motion clarity despite the TN being extremley fast for an LCD monitor

I got the ASUS 27 inch IPS panel 280hz 1080p monitor used on Amazon for like $170. It's actually a 240hz, with an overclock setting that takes it up to 280hz. The anti flicker tech and the anti motion blur tech is good, overdrive settings good, IPS display so the colors are also good.

I have 13900KS and 4090 and I average between 320 to 500 fps in an actual match (Valorant), sometimes even less when there's a big fight with a lot of skills being used in real time. I don't think it's even possible to run any of the competitive FPS titles at 540+ without an external chiller and some extreme overclocking. I'm running 240 hz at 1440p and I can't imagine going back to 1080, especially a TN panel.

Valorant favours AMD quite a bit for some rteason although yeah true at most your averages will only just hit that 540 fps number even with a 7800x3d. That being said with a lot of overclocking at 1440p with a 13600k and 3060ti i average like 430-650fps lol. Most of that is from ram overclocking tho its really important in val.

I got a 360hz monitor for my rhythm games and noticed a difference straight away from old 165hz monitor. I dont think it was an insane jump like 60 to 144 was but its noticeable enough jump and it really didn't cost me much. £255 on sale with dell awards program as well as I got the AW3423DW a year ago and they gave my rewards late it seems. Its made reading dense patterns easier. I will have to test out an FPS game, I stopped playing em as I dont like Val or CS... Halo is dead af and has been since reach, I reached onyx in infinite and quite instantly, OW I hit masters before OW2 happened and quit... To come back to OW2 to get the wrong rank bug so I quit again. And the game is still bad as well. Oh and siege also got ass, I remember hitting Plat when that was the second highest... Then when champ dropped the cheaters got more rampant it seems so I quit that on top of all the balance issues.

@Frozoken

For the most part yes. Its a fast monitor yes so for most people what you say is true but you could go for a 360hz 1440p oled at that point and not only enjoy a much better looking image but have less input lag and faster response times too. For context the 540hz has about 1ms of input lag and 2ms of pixel response time meaning the display takes 1ms to even start responding and another 2ms to switch the pixels to the new frame while the new 360hz oleds have 0.1ms input lag and 0.3ms pixel response times so your total input lag on the, once again, way better looking oled is 0.4ms total rather than 3ms total of the 540hz.
