Sansa Stark has been betrothed to and married off to many men throughout her journey in A Song of Ice and Fire, and a minor moment in the Dunk and Egg stories called the Ashford Tourney might be the key to explaining where her character is going next. But does the Ashford theory have any merit, and could Sansa actually marry a Targaryen?

Never thought Sansa was like Elizabeth I that much…more like Elizabeth of York. A famous beauty, very tall, all other Tudors inherited her reddish gold hair. She had a happy family life till her father died, she was the sister of the two Princes who disappeared, and married Henry Tudor to strengthen their throne claims. He resisted, but realized it was necessary to marry her to Rule. But the marriage was a happy one. Growing slowly from attraction and respect to love. Henry Tudor had spent 14 years in exile and was the last King of England to win his crown in Battle. He was charismatic, a magnetic leader, but stern and thrifty. She supported their Court and society, since he had been an exile so long. They got a papal dispensation to marry because they were closely related…

I agree. ASOIAF is a retelling the Wars of the Roses, the Starks and Lannisters are parallel with the Yorks and Lancasters, and the war ended with a marriage between Elizabeth of York and Henry Tudor. Sansa is the direct parallel to Elizabeth of York, I think it will end with her marriage bringing peace.

I am starting to see Sansa as another British royal - Mary Queen of Scots. It's all the weddings and betrothals. I don't think she'll be killed by another queen, but I think she will have exactly one child who will be the heir to many places.

I don't think Sansa needs Aegon to round out her character arc. Discovering Littlefinger's betrayal of Ned 𝐚𝐧𝐝 his lie about the catspaw dagger 𝐀𝐍𝐃 the fate of Jeyne Poole would be motivation enough for Sansa to decide she'll be no man's tool from there on out, and then she'll put him in a dungeon and present her case to to the lords of the Vale and riverlands as the rightful Lady of Winterfell.

I'm sorry for my pedantic nature, but... They're not foils, they're parallels. Jon and Joffrey are foils. They are the exact opposites. Most notably, Jon is short, Joffrey is tall. Also, just my own theory, a more likely match for Aegon would be Daenerys. Daenerys is Jon's parallel. Due to everything that happens in their stories, Jon and Danh kinda feel like they're being set up not as lovers, but as enemies. This leads to an even wackier theory: Dany and Aegon being together could possibly parallel Jon and Sansa.

I never disliked the idea of Sansa becoming her own influential Person, what I disliked about the Show was: Sansa being ALONE! No Family, no Friends no one at all by her side. That and the fact that this f**** Wall still stands. I want it down, destroyed, deconstructed, whatever you want to call it, I hate that thing with a Passion, it has to go! As long as Sansa is not alone a fact she has been since Ned's Death, I am okay with her being Lady of Winterfell and Ruler of the North. Here is my Reason for that way of thinking, it needs a bit of Backstory so bear with me: I was bullied since I was a small Kid because I have a Skin sickness no one really knows what it is, I have rashes regularly and because it never was found out what it Causes and why I have these (because every known Test failed to work) it was really a try and Error thing what works and what doesn't my Whole Life. Today I have a pretty good idea of what I have to avoid and newer Tests came at least out with some Reasons for my Problems, although the Reason why it happens and what causes these problems, in terms of what Sickness I actually have, is still a mystery. But because I know today what I have to avoid my rashes are not as regular as they were when I was a Kid. But they still happen more than I want them to happen. So my whole Childhood and adolescence, I was alone in a Group. The worst kind of being lonely for me is when you are alone in a Group and that's exactly what Sansa was since her Father was beheaded. Therefore, I have no problem that Sansa becoming her own Powerplayer and taking matters into her own hand, I just don't want her to be alone again, give her Rikkon or Jon or anyone, maybe Mya Stone or one of the Manderly Girls, standing by her side because Sansa is simple Sansa because they are Friends or Family or even found Family. That's enough for me that it will be a Happy End. Thx for this Video.

@@Ilargizuri I think Sansa Arya and Bran will rule together in the end. It will be a parallel of Aegon the Conqueror, Rhaenys and Visenya. Of course there will be no incest involved 🤢 🤢 🤢 Sansa will probably be his Hand, the first ever female Hand. The Stark family will be united again. @@gerardjagroo Yes, the title is suggestive. But given the Motives and the Symbolism on a Meta-Level that surrounds Arya, I don't think that will happen, it just doesn't fit. Overall her narrative and Symbolism hints towards someone who either will die in the Process of fighting for the living or leaving Westeros because she wants to see more of the World in that Way the Show was not Wrong, just very poorly executed. The Motives and Symbolism in that regard point more towards either Sam or Jon. Visenya was the aggressive one who was very knowledgable in terms of Magic, both things that points towards Jon or Sam. Arya has to much Cats and Lion-Symbolism in her Narative and given the Narative in terms of Lions and Cats in these Books neither hint towards royalty or Political Power.

I'm gonna come off of left field and say that Aegon has TWO other potental matches aside from Arianne and Sansa: Margaery and Myrcella. Margaery goes without saying, as her family is willing to sell her off as bride to whoever they think holds the most power (though at this point the convincibility of this ploy may be at an end and there may be other ways to ally the Tyrells to Aegon than marriage - e.g. the fact that the Tyrells now hate the Lannisters and supporting Aegon is their best shot at getting rid of them and staying in power). The left field but likely option imo is Myrcella. She's younger but not too young by Westerosi standards (she's as old as Cersei was when Tywin tried to marry her to Rhaegar), she's pretty and nice and a proper lady in all the ways that would appeal to a king, and she doesn't appear to have any of the nasty Lannister traits others hate - plus her history of being abducted and possibly maimed (if it was indeed her and not Rosamund) might give her a 'real life' je ne sais quoi that might appeal to Aegon or at least his followers. Most importantly, a marriage match between Aegon and Myrcella might be the only semi-peaceful way for Aegon to take power from the Lannisters, which seems to be their MO in taking power in Westeros so far instead of all out direct war. Think about it: Cersei is losing support on all sides, Tommen may soon die leaving only Myrcella as heir, and now a new and much more popular king is winning power -- and this king reminds Cersei of Rhaegar, they guy she'd been 'in love with' when she was young but who married a Dornish girl instead of her. Cersei might know she's losing and may be willing to go down with that ship if that's what it takes, but if she's given an offer to marry her last child (and technical Baratheon/Lannister Queen, even if uncrowned) to the son of the guy who turned her down when she was young, and also so the Lannister blood is still associated with the Iron Throne, then Cersei is getting the best version of a win she can: on the political and bloodline side, she gets the influence of her daughter being Queen (which would make her father and Lannister name proud) and the Lannisters technically don't get defeated by Aegon, they just join forces; and on the personal side she gets a sort of revenge/turning of the tables on her own backstory of being cast aside for Elia with Myrcella being chosen by Aegon over Arianne. Cersei might well see this as her best bet even as a part of her resents having to sell her daughter off like Tywin tried to do to her, and she might even be made Lady of Casterly Rock to make her go away and 'get what she wants' while also not being able to meddle in Aegon's rule. From Aegon and co's perspective, they get to take over Westeros with minimal bloodshed, making a deal to take away Cersei's power but in a way that will keep her allied to them and not vengeful, and marry a pretty and desirable lady that can help them gain legitimacy but without having to share power as Myrcella is young and inexperienced enough to not have a say of her own. It's a pretty clever match from many perspectives, and I think it makes great storytelling sense for Aegon and his people AND for Cersei's arc. Plus, Cersei being sent off to CR makes sense with George recently writing about CR in his not-a-blog since we're likely to see her get to CR by late Winds/early Dream (and that sets everything up for Tyrion coming to take CR from Cersei and enact his revenge on her).

Aegon will be shooting himself in the foot by marrying Cersei's known bastard. When Aegon marches on King's Landing, he'd be doing so with overwhelming force and the support of many. He will not need to negotiate with Cersei about anything when he could simply pluck her down from the throne. By marrying the bastard, he'd also be alienating Dorne who hates the Lannisters. If he needs the Westerlands so bad, it would be easier to name Addam Marbrand or one of the Lannisport Lannisters as it's Lord. They'd be smart enough to see which way the wind is blowing and turn their cloaks.

I mean isn’t the whole war based on the premise that Cersei and Robert’s children are bastards? If JonCon and co take Storms End and defeats Mace Tyrell in the field I could see them bending the knee to Aegon have Tommen renounce his kingship and Margery her queenship.... That way Tommen would become lord of StormsEnd or if he's discovered as a bastard Aegon might legitimize him and he'll be Tommen Lannister heir to Casterly Rock (which is more likely to happen as that's what Tywin wanted. He originally wanted Jamie to marry Margery and assume his place at Casterly Rock) I can't imagine Cersie making it out of her trial she has no support and no way will Mace ever have her back as regent and sitting in the small council. Margery might end up being regent as the case against her isn't very strong as the high septon said himself....

I think something that would be a good conclusion to Sansa's arc as well would be to see her reunite her with Rickon in Winterfell. Familial love is just as important as romantic love and she's been dying to be with her family ever since Ned died. Having Rickon as her heir would also nullify any potential succession crisis/question since he's a true-born Stark with a direwolf. That way, she would have the love she's always wanted (Rickon would love her just because she's his sister) without having to be someone's wife.

It would/could make sense for many reasons, too. It would stabilize the North. No succession issues. She wouldn't worry about him taking Winterfell. Her grandparents (Ned's parents) were also cousins. They weren't like siblings as children. They know what each other has been through & their traumas. He is brave, gentle, & strong. He is like Ned & she is like Cat, but better. It would stop people from trying to undermine her claim, etc. Then there is the Jonnel & Sansa Stark history of it all.

It's funny to me that people are like ''it's impossible to grow up as siblings and then it changes to romantic feelings''. On many occasions, it is shown that Jon and Sansa aren't close as siblings. When Jon speaks of his sister, he often only thinks of Arya. Sansa is never really part of his siblings thought. Meaning either he doesn't consider her his sister at all, or he chooses to distance Sansa from that role. For those who doubt these theories, I suggest you read 'The Jonsa Compendium', you should find a very elaborated essay on their relationship and their potential future. Super interesting.

The fact that many of the marriages/betrothals have been unconsummated, cancelled, or straight up not wanted by Sansa seems to indicate that she will end as a virgin queen. I think you mentioned before that GRRM has gone out of his way to keep Sansa a virgin for thematic purposes, and considering who her potential “husbands” are, Sansa has every right to stay a virgin. I think it builds up to Sansa and her choice to stay single at the end of the series, since another unwanted betrothal or marriage seems like the last thing she wants. Besides, Young Griff is betrothal material, not husband material. I sincerely doubt that Sansa would want to marry another prince with entitlement issues towards the Iron Throne.

While I understand this perspective and it’s one of the better outcomes for Sansa, I can’t help, but to disagree. Sansa has been a romantic character from the beginning who wants to get married, have a loving husband and beautiful children. I know, dreams can change, but I feel that she would still want these things and it would be kind of sad if she doesn’t get them. I mean she believed that no one would ever love her for her an not her claim, the best end would be for her to find someone who puts her above her claim. Someone who truly loves her. If at the end we strip Sansa of her romantic nature and she actually doesn’t get what she has wanted, it’s like letting Littlefinger’s words win (Life isn’t a song). Again, I know realistically life isn’t a song, but I’m saying within the story Sansa’s hope and resilience is her biggest strength. She is also the heroine in a story where Littlefinger is her villain, I think it would make more sense if Sansa is the fulfilled song, especially cuz her singing is also a big part of her character.

@@emta8149 that’s a good point. I don’t think Sansa will be put off of marriage forever, but I don’t think she’ll be married at the end of the series. She might be pursuing a relationship with someone who loves her genuinely and power is no longer a factor in their relationship, but I think based on the current chronology, her marriage would likely come in post canon. Maybe GRRM will write a new history book after he finishes A Dream of Spring, featuring Sansa’s marriage.

The issue with Sansa as a royal bride is twofold. She's credibly accused of killing Joffrey, so even someone from a new regime would want to avoid association with her to prevent scandal and might also be afraid that she'd poison another king/fiance. Marriage to her would be intended to win the support of the North and the Riverlands... but, to be frank, neither of those kingdoms is the power-player it once was, ravaged by war and winter. The Others are presumably going to become a problem south of the Wall soon which could completely wipe the north out. Its Dorne and the Vale that are the powerplayers now, since they kept themselves out of the war thus far. So I'm wondering, if there's going to be a marriage in Sansa's future, will it be Sansa Stark's marriage, or Alayne Stone's (or Alayne Baelish) marriage, and the alliance is about securing the Vale forces, not the North or the Riverlands? Alayne Stone is ridiculously too low-born to marry a king, but if Aegon is desperate, say he's trying to feed his new subjects and needs the Vale army and LF's been hording grain... the politics might be just right for the betrothal to happen?
@g_wylde
@g_wylde Жыл бұрын
Although I don't think Sansa will ever actually become Aegon's wife, I don't think the points you made are the most relevant. In terms of Joffrey, everyone hates him and it'll be easy enough to find someone else to blame for his death, e.g. Tyrion acting alone (which makes most sense politically for Aegon once Dany arrives with Tyrion as her ally), Littlefinger if Sansa reveals it, or literally anyone else. Basically it's an easy enough thing to wave away when just about everyone important in Westeros hated Joffrey and didn't realistically believe that little Sansa could have plotted his murder or that she wouldn't have had good reason to do it if she had. In terms of the relative importance of the North and the Riverlands, you have to remember that the whole power of the Iron Throne and title of King of the Seven Kingdoms is based on having a unified ruler of all the realms. The more realms try to rebel or become independent, the less power the IT actually has, and that opens the doors for other kingdoms to also want independence. The RL are especially important because they're right in the middle of Westeros and you can't have stable power across the 7K if the central kingdom is rebellious, fractured and following a different leader (e.g. Littlefinger, the Freys, Dany, Jon/the North/Stannis or whoever might try to claim it from under Aegon). The North is HUGE and has a history (old and recent) of being culturaly different from the rest and wanting independence. Allowing them to be independent from the first is just a bad idea for the reasons I already mentioned, but especially if the North is still hosting a rival king who wants to take the IT. If marrying Sansa means bringing in the North and getting them to turn away from Stannis, that's still a major political and military benefit to Aegon even if the Northern forces are somewhat depleted. The main challenge with the North is that if it has a different leader, e.g. Jon or even Rickon, and Sansa is far away from it and is a daughter, then it'll take time and effort for Sansa's technical claim on the North to become an actual claim, and that's time that Aegon probably won't have. In terms of the Others coming south, tbh I think by the time that happens (at the earliest at very end of Winds, but we won't properly see the effects until Dream) the situation with Aegon and his marriage options will already be on the way out. Either Aegon will be defeated by Dany before he even recognises the scale of the threat, and/or Jon will have been elevated to King in the North at that point and Dany and Aegon will have to contend with another competing or independent King they'll want to bring to their side. Plus, if Jon's heritage is found out by either his own followers or other people (e.g. if he bonds with a dragon), then the threat of another dragon riding claimant will suddenly make an alliance with the North EXTREMELY important, either via Jon himself or by trying to replace him with the 'safer' choice of Sansa. But at the same time, at that point in the series it's likely Sansa's situation will have already changed and she may be more interested in making her own power moves (e.g. uniting the Vale with the RL via Sweetrobin's and/or LF's goodwill plus her connections to the Tullys and even Stoneheart, the Brotherhood and Brienne/Jaime; coming back North to join with or contest Jon on her own terms, etc.) So overall I agree Sansa won't end up marrying Aegon, but I think it's mostly because Aegon's upcoming story will have too much going on for a marriage with Sansa to ever happen before he dies - it might even be planned via Littlefinger, but won't have time to come true. Most likely Aegon will end up marrying someone who's already nearby, either Arianne or Margaery or Myrcella, who can give him more immediate political benefits via their families' alliances and who'll be personally present for Aegon to get to know or feel attracted to (he may well go against the politically wise moves and marry the girl he likes best, but he has to MEET said girl in order to choose her).

@@g_wylde everyone hates Joffrey? When did that happen??? Everyone who knew Joffrey grew to despise him (except Cersei), I'll grant, but that's not everyone. Our perception of these characters is not the same as the general in-universe view of them. To the commons and the histories, he will probably be remembered as the brave boy-king. As the people who knew Joffrey best are killed off, memory of his cruelty will begin to fade amongst the overall population. As everything gets worse and worse with winter approaching, Joffrey's reign might start to even be looked back upon fondly. And even if he is remembered as a tyrant, his perceived killer would also have massive notoriety. Robb Stark is considered a traitor, and the Freys/Boltons massacred him at the Lannisters' request, but that doesn't stop Cersei's small council from debating executing Freys to make it appear like they did not condone the Red Wedding. Plenty of people think Sansa killed Joffrey: "The dwarf's wife did the murder with him," swore an archer in Lord Rowan's livery. "Afterward, she vanished from the hall in a puff of brimstone, and a ghostly direwolf was seen prowling the Red Keep, blood dripping from his jaws." (Jaime VII ASoS) "No," the Knight of Flowers said, unamused. "Sansa Stark was the poisoner. You all forget, my sister was drinking from that chalice as well. Sansa Stark was the only person in the hall who had reason to want Margaery dead, as well as the king. By poisoning the wedding cup, she could hope to kill both of them. And why did she run afterward, unless she was guilty?" (Jaime VIII ASoS) Even Brienne thinks its probable - Sansa was a gentle soul who loved lemon cakes, silken gowns, and songs of chivalry, yet the girl had seen her father's head lopped off and been forced to marry one of his killers afterward. If half the tales were true, the dwarf was the cruelest Lannister of all. If she did poison King Joffrey, the Imp surely forced her hand. (Brienne I AFfC). It is true that having the support of all seven kingdoms is a great sign of legitimacy, I don't think that this nominal support alone would be enough to force a marriage. Dany's dragons would easily get this support, so the only reason to discard Plan A and try to marry someone else would be dire political need - needing an army, or gold, or food. Neither the North or the Riverlands can provide either, and yet the Vale can provide all three. Despite any history of seeking independence, I think the North and especially the Riverlands would support whoever gave them the food to survive the long winter. Right now the most powerful House in the Riverlands is probably House Frey, right? The Twins are far removed from the worst of the fighting, and the Freys abandoned Robb pretty early, so fewer of their knights and soldiers were slaughtered in Robb's battles. The Freys were very wealthy to begin with, and now they've got a bunch of hostages from the Red Wedding. The most powerful House in the North would be the Frey-Bolton alliance. While these Houses will probably fall from grace very badly in Winds, they won't be wiped out completely instantly, and news travels slowly besides, so Aegon's gonna think they're still in charge for a long while. Both of these Houses would think that a Stark/Tully ressurgency would be gunning for them, so neither would look favorably upon a king with a Stark/Tully consort. And if Stannis wins the Battle of Ice in a landslide... I don't think he'd care if Sansa was married to Aegon, he'd never support Aegon. The northern lords would probably support Stannis and Rickon over Aegon and Sansa? Possibly unless they were starving, and Aegon was willing to ship food to his supporters.

@@g_wylde The other potential brides you mention - Arianne, Margaery and Myrcella - yeah, i think there's potential there. I think Tommen will die and live a second life in Ser Pounce in a parallel to Rhaegar and Elia's daughter Rhaenys. Once that happens, Aegon could marry Myrcella to consolidate his claim with the Baratheon-Lannister claim? It would upset the Dornish, though, to break the Myrcella-Trystane betrothal, but I think they could make it work. Arianne's determination to one-up Quentyn could definitely see her marry Aegon, despite the precarious political position that would put her in, so that works well as a fatal flaw/tragic karmic downfall kind of thing. Margaery... maybe? I thought she'd die pretty early in Winds in a parallel to Queen Helaena's death to kick off a brief Moon of Madness 2.0 before Aegon takes the city, but grrm might have other plans for her.

With Arianne marrying Aegon... I think The Soiled Knight-era Arianne would've jumped at the prospect of marrying Aegon - anything to one-up Quentyn, and she probably would've done so in defiance of her father. The fact that the marriage would've probably put her in a weak, precarious position where she's expected to adhere to traditional gender roles wouldn't have factored seriously into her decision-making process, and if it led to her misery and her downfall... well, that would've demonstrated very poetically her fatal flaw and stuff. But Arianne has had a lot of character development since then, a lot of time to think in her tower and her journey into the Stormlands. So I expect at her meeting with Aegon, her first instinct will be to demand a marriage to him, but then she's pause for a moment and think about it... and ultimately demand something else as the price of an alliance - maybe for Aegon to institute parts of Dornish Law for the rest of Westeros? That said, we can safely say that something's gotta drive a wedge between Aegon and Daenerys, and one of them being married would help achieve that. So if not Arianne, maybe Sansa...

Take into acount that, by the beginning of TWOW, Arianne is days away from meeting fAegon, and nobody in the seven kingdoms knows where Sansa is. Or if she’s even alive. I think he would be quite short-sighted to arrange a marriage now. Dany with her dragons would be his best if not only sensible option, actually, because he can hardly expect her to come to Westeros like a conqueror with her dragons and then what? Bend the knee? Resign herself to be the king’s second wife? Her relegated aunt? Have you heard about the Dragon Girl burning cities, kiddo? Wasn’t that the original plan, win the throne first so he is in equal (or not as unequal) footing with her? He may be forced to marry for immediate issues and pay for it in the long run if Dany comes to Westeros and he has no bargaining chip left to seal an alliance with her. She may obliterate him. She’s not just a prospective wife, she’s a poweful rival on her own right. He may marry Arianne if hard pressed because he’s in a hurry and she’s the only viable option presently. And the best one IN WESTEROS, for all he knows, even if she’s family already. No Tully, Tyrell, Lannister, Arryn, Greyjoy or Baratheon lady is available or convenient for him. He doesn’t know about any Stark heiress either. Who else would he chose if not Arianne, a Frey? Sansa is not a viable option unless Littlefinger orchestrates it. Nobody knows her whereabouts or even if she’s alive, and she has not the information or the means (or the motivation?) to do it by herself.

The hurtle with the Ashford theory is that Sansa was kinda betrothed to Robert Arryn, and there were no Arryn victors at the Ashford Tourney: "It would not be fitting for my son to take that dwarf's leavings, but as he never touched you . . . How would you like to marry your cousin, the Lord Robert?" (Sansa VI ASoS) I think Ashford mainly foreshadows the death of Harry Hardying in a tourney/trial? Thank you for this video! I like this theory for many reasons. I could see Sansa convincing Harry to help her take back Winterfell, and they are successful, but Harry doesn’t make it through the battle, so she then decides to get engaged to Aegon to protect the North against Cersei (and maybe even secure independence for the North). If Cersei was to lose to Aegon with Sansa as his future wife, it would be poetic for Sansa to help orchestrate Cersei’s demise considering their history. Further down the line when Dany gets to Westeros, if Sansa has animosity towards Dany in the books as she did in the show, it would make a lot more sense for Sansa’s animosity to be based off Dany’s likely attempt/success at deposing Aegon in the future, instead of the somewhat random distrust and dislike Sansa and the Starks have of Dany in the show. With John and Dany likely being engaged at some point too, this could create much more realistic conflicts between John and Sansa and between Sansa and Dany. This would be especially true if Sansa won independence for the North through her diplomacy and betrothal to Aegon, and then John gave up his crown to gain the support of Dany, who insisted on ruling all seven kingdoms. Also, it could be interesting if Aegon rejects Arianne for Sansa, paralleling Rhaegar’s leaving of Elia for Lyanna. This could have consequences for Aegon’s relationship with Dorne, who could side with Dany and contribute to his unraveling, paralleling the Jeyne and Robb storyline. As you said too, since Aegon likely won't make it with Dany coming into the picture, Sansa's expected ending would still hold too.

I want to point out, the wars of the roses ended with a wedding. And I believe this could be the same with Sansa and Aegon. After Henry VII and Elizabeth of York married and unified the brittish kingdom so I think it could signal to that. And yeah, probably Aegon will ultimately end in Dany and him battling it out for the throne, probably dying at the hands of his aunt. And it will make Sansa end up being like Queen Elizabeth, a virgin queen. With Rickon as her heir or something like that. (Because I truly believe Bran is just gonna take the place of bloodraven)

I think Bran the All Seeing Tree Wizard will become King in the end exactly because he is an All Seeing Tree Wizard. I think this is what the author George RR Martin intends. The show ending, rushed as it might have been did not come from nowhere, neither did Mad Queen Daenerys. I think if Dan and Dave could have chosen they would have made Daenerys ultimate ruler in the end for feminist brownie points but that King Bran comes from George. They would not have been so hardy as to make Bran king from nowhere if it didn't come from the author.

Loved the video. I am a firm believer in this Aegon and Sansa idea. Beyond just the Ashford Tourney, there are numerous parallels between them. Fake identities, centerpiece pawns, supposedly the picture perfect prince/princess but actually unprepared for the world and sheltered, posing as children of their mentors who were in unrequited love with their real (“real”) parents. It can’t be ignored. I also strongly agree with your points that the match has to be political (or start out that way) and come from Sansa’s agency, otherwise her story is moving backward. Like you said a marriage to Aegon unites the North and South, and I think that because reality will punch Aegon in the face early in Winds of Winter much like it punched Sansa in the face at the end of AGoT, he will be trying to take Westeros as peacefully as possible, rather than leading men into battle and playing at war. Marrying Sansa achieves that peace. And that desire for peace creates an interesting conflict with JonCon’s determination and warpath. However, I am not as optimistic about Sansa’s endgame. First of all, Sansa being Queen in the North was most likely just fan service, because an independent North makes absolutely no sense if Bran is king, and King Bran is what the endgame revolves around. D&D did repeatedly say they “love” Sansa. Sansa’s story has been all about the South. She is the only Stark to never get a POV that takes place in Winterfell. In the original outline, GRRM planned for Sansa to marry Joffrey, have a child with him, and betray her family. The original outline still holds some weight. I believe something like this can happen with a marriage to Aegon- not betrayal, just a much more morally grey situation between her and her family- where the Starks are forced to choose between Aegon and Daenerys. Sadly this puts Sansa in Daenerys’ line of fire, and the Stark conflict may end up culminating in such a confrontation. This may have been D&D’s inspiration for the Dany vs Sansa stuff. I LOVE Sansa. While her story is headed towards her taking agency and becoming a player of the game, I think a tragic path GRRM could take follows her achieving this agency, but trying to do the right thing with it (marring Aegon and uniting the North and South, being a queen the people love) and ending up in an extremely dangerous situation- Dance of the Dragons 2.0- that nobody in her shoes could get out of.

My question on the benefits of an Aegon / Sansa marriage is around the idea of her bringing the north “back into the kingdoms”. If the North would not accept Sansa as their Queen or follow her leadership, then why would Aegon think she could bring him the north? At most it would be only ensuring good diplomatic relations with Jon or Bran who would be the new King in the North. And if she can’t bring the North under Aegon’s rule as soon as he marries her, then what’s the strategic value of the marriage compared to marrying Arianne who will be the leader of Dorne and can ensure they support Aegon’s war effort?

Or you know Dany would just end up marrying FAegon and he would be her consort that was the original plan only difference is that now he'll be in a much better position to marry her than he was in Dance.... We've had 5 Blackfire rebellions all of them ending pretty horribly and then for a 6th to end the same. What's the lesson here?! GRRM did say he wamted a second dance of the dragons but that doesn't mean it's going to be a beat for beat reinaction..... The second dance could be Sansa Vs Rickon for the North.. Sansa who is probably going to marry sweet Robin (he&his mother both wanted him to marry Sansa) who will have the Riverlands and the Vale on her side vs Rickon who will have Stannis and the North on his side... I don't know how it's going to end Rickon might die maybe but who knows As for Margery as a suitor it's unlikely to happen as she's already married and divorce isn't a thing in Westoros. I could see Aegon and co taking StormsEnd and defeating the Tyrells in battle..if that happens Mace as hand and regent(no way in hell he's going to have Cersie back in power) would have Tommen and Margery renounce their king and queenship and bend the knee to Aegon.... Tommen would become lord of StormsEnd or if he's discovered as a bastard Aegon might legitimize him and he would become lord of Casterly Rock... Which is not a huge lose for Mace as he'll have control over 2 kingdoms and being on good terms with the new king doesn’t sound bad especially since Kevan is dead the only one who really held the Lannister's and Tyrells together Arianna is the most likely to marry Aegon and she has reason to back Aegon her one sided sibling rivalry with Quentyn would definitely play a part in dividing Dany and Aegon especially if Quentyn is dead. But honestly Dany and Aegon are likely to be married JonCon himself said that Aegon is to remain unwed as Dany might come back to Westoros

My ideal scenario is some serious drama unfolds, ideally Lady Stoneheart shows up in the Vale and reveals some stuff. My ideal scenario is all the characters are given a little shock as to the larger plot in the North. I think it would be interesting if Harry Harding had a sort of change of heart, or finds out Sansa is still technically married and refuses her, thankfully. We see he's definitely liking Sansa and seems to be a rude jock type. But perhaps the upset will put things into perspective for him, and he and Sansa form a platonic relationship. He helps her yeet Little finger and they ride North. And similarly with Jon and Dany, everything with Sansa stays platonic, but there is room for more that we wont be privy to.

Yes! Sansa ruling the North!!! (with her sister Arya Stark aka Jeyne Poole at her side, and also maybe the actual Arya Stark, whose concealing her true identity from most people and not living the life of a highborn lady?) Will there be hereditary succession after Sansa, though? (maybe pointless/futile to speculate?) Like, we see time and time again what a bad system it is to have hereditary rule, but at the same time, trying to change the system too suddenly (Daenerys) is also disastrous? Hence why Sansa, who has a hereditary claim to Winterfell, would be ruling? Will the end of asoiaf be about compromise, or tearing down monarchy, or what? (or does grrm even know entirely lol)

The problem with the Ashford Theory is that Lysa planned to marry Sansa to Robyn. Granted, it was not official and will never happen but it is the same with Willas and yet there is a Tyrell at Ashford. For the theory to work, there should be an Arryn knight between the Lannister and the Hardyng.

The story is so complicated that it's difficult to say what's going to happen. But I believe that the timelines don't match. Sansa is currently incognito in the Vale, and the North is ruled by the Boltons who have supported the Lannisters. So, at this point the North is no ally of Aegon and until the time Sansa and Jon reclaim the North Aegon probably won't be alive anymore. Despite everything, I believe that Sansa will marry. She is foreshadowed to marry a king, and there aren't many kings in Westeros (lol.) However, you're right to examine this issue, because it depends on Martin's choice. Will he follow the norm and marry his romantic protagonist? Or is this just a trope ready to be subverted like all others?

You missed the senieor vale-candidate born to an Arryn - the ELDER sister to Hardyngs mother if I recall it correctly - and a Mountain-clansman: Timmet Son of Timett (can't remember which one is double). If Sweetrobin should die, and he is very close to be poisoned with milk of the poppy, Harry Hardyng is hardly to rule, because Timmet might come either as a mystery-knight to the tourney or intrude on their wedding party and kill him - and Timett knows he can't marry Sansa, because he swore an oath to Tyrion and oaths are important with First Men, so he will send her off - to Young Gryff Blackfyre. She might have had her fill of handsome and unknightly men, and will go and find a 'real knight'. If Tyrion isn't dead by then, he promised her she would come to him on her free will, or if Sandor makes it past the Clegane-Bowl she will go with him, or she will do as her 'ancestors' Lady Lothston or Black Ally be another witch-queen, since she inherits Harrenhal as Petyrs adoptive daughter. And Rickon might secure the line at Winterfell. Jon might go North to find Val, whom I believe to be the offspring of a Bastard of either Bloodraven or Master Aemon with a Wildling. Since the Wildlings don't marry 'legally' and have no family-names to pass on to their sons, a Nightwatch-vow is not broken.

Aegon(Young griff) will save her from Hardyng, seemingly to complete the “one true dragon Prince” ideal, since Hardyng will literally lock her in a tower and she will send a bird for help, that being Aegon. They will be wed, Sansa will leave early from the celebration because she gets a letter saying Rob is alive at a Sept. (Re: “Dracula” Jonathon Harker escaping as Reek). Daenerys will show and have a tiff with Aegon, foooosh goes Aegon and most of his retinue like Victarion, Selmy, Septa Lemore, etc. though Jon Con survives. For an answer to Preston Jacobs’ problem with the theory: Robert Arryn is Robert’s bastard, therefore a Baratheon. Note: Sansa will marry Aegon before he dies so Sansa will be a Dowager queen like her mentor Cercei and in this way claimant to the throne. Petyr will die, and therefore will be unable to stop the wedding to Hardyng. The wedding was a ruse, Petyr in no way wants it to occur. The original plan was to get Hardyng to come, declare Robert Arryn Robert Baratheon’s son and true king, make Hardyng lord of the Vale, and probably marry Sansa to Robin to make her queen. That plan went fubar when the main witness got tossed out the moondoor. Before Petyr can do his declarations, he will be accused of murdering Lysa. Sansa will betray him, thinking him the villian, and Petyr’s declarations of Robin will sound desperate lies to keep him alive. The man who told us who “Harry the Heir” is, Petyr; will be Petyr’s heir by marrying Sansa (who is Petyr’s actual biological daughter, hence why she doesn’t have Stark features). Following the “little bird told me” letter, Aegon will attack Harrenhall and save Sansa. The “daughterless” Stark should be mentioned, since it hints at Sansa will continue the Stark name (despite not really being a Stark) . Sandor is “the gravedigger “ and now has no last name to give; so Sansa having children with him will mean her last name will continue.

Oh yeah, forgot to say… Sandor won’t be married or engaged to Sansa, so that doesn’t factor into Ashford Theory. Before Sandor, on the way back from Kingslanding to Winterfell in the Vale, Sansa will be captured by the Mountain men of the Vale. They don’t marry or become engaged in “the Seven” sense, so the Burned man also doesn’t factor. Sansa will warg a bird, to bring Sandor to the rescue this time, a literal “little bird told me” message. Mad Mouse will be locked up this time or at Harrenhall with her, and helps her escape.

I don't want Sansa to end with Tyrion because he "deserves her", but the fact is that a Sept would have to annul their marriage, so she can remarry. my guess is that the parallel is more of a Sansa-Tyrion & Robb-Jane. the seashell wolf would inherit the Kingdom of Winter, while Sansa would rule over the Westerlands. which fits quite well with the "younger and more beautiful queen" prophesy if we take "queen" in almost metaphorically.

Or at least the books make it seem very likely. Just to keep readers on their toes. I know a lot of you haven't been reading this series since it came out (because it came out like 2.5 decades ago!) but when it was a fresh series all the shock and plot twists in the first few books are a large part of what made it so good. Also young griff is poop. edit: also I don't think sansa would usurp her brother's seat. Her becoming lady of the north as long as her brother's are alive is just not realistic. most of westeros is male preference succession, and sansa is a stark, which mean she's loyal and honorable, despite her spoiled nature in the first book, so she wouldn't just take the throne, even if she had support. Even if something with bran goes awry, there's still rickon. Rickon's regent? Maybe, doubtful though, I don't see the men of the north following a woman regent. A women lady of winterfell, yes, as long as she was the only stark available, but not a woman regent, especially so young. And I don't think georgie plans on writing book rickon off like they did tv rickon.

The one hiccup for me is how would Sansa be persuaded that Aegon is the real deal and not a pretender? Based on GRRM's original story for Sansa, I have often wondered, if Joffrey was a decent man, and he and Sansa were truly in love, would she still want to marry him if she found out he was a bastard? Part of me thinks that would still matter to Sansa unlike show Margaery who is happy to marry someone she knows to be a bastard, because most of the society at large doesn't see him as illegitimate.

I think building an actual relationship at this time may be too much. Maybe Sansa gets bethothed to Jon but it is cancelled. Jon thinks far more of Arya than Sansa and Sansa thinks of Gregor Clegane who in the books is in his late 20s. Gregor may not be in love with her at this point though. It's poetic to me that she leaves Winterfell a niave child, bethothed to a prince, believing in beautiful, superficial knights and returns a less niave woman who wants to be with an "ugly" "true" knight. Sansa can be lady of the Eyrie. It doesn't need much protection and is used to being ruled by less than ideal persons. In the book it's often said that Sansa is bad at numbers but good at womanly duties. But what does she have but her name and beauty to rule a kingdom? She can't fight like Arya. Warg like Bran nor gain information. Green dream or fight fiercely like Rickon. Or even give counsel for things like wars or taxes or negotiate like Catelyn. Yes, she got beaten by Joffery's guard. But so was Arya when she was taken captive. And Jeyne Poole was given to a brothel for "training" before she was married and beaten at Winterfell. Sansa was always rescued - by the Hound, by Olenna, by Petyr. I don't think she would be a good queen in Winterfell nor King's Landing but maybe she can be happy. Ps. SPOILER It's implied that Aegon is not a "true" Targaryen but a Blackfyre, a mummer's dragon.

She's said it herself from the start, but also Arya likes to hang out with common people and understand their struggles so whatever Arya does next will be smaller scale and less 'official' than being Lady of the Riverlands or the North or whatever. She could even take over or recreate a 'Brotherhood without Banners' type of group that travels around the countryside helping common people and the reconstruction efforts, while also having the name and background to meet with local Lords and get the necessary support/funding to rebuild. But in terms of who'll rule the North in the end, I definitely agree it'll be Sansa, and probably as an umarried queen who therefore doesn't need to share her power (also because Sansa's been through enough being used as a marriage pact chip and will probably not want to get herself involved with something like that again if she's in a position to say no).

I speak only as a watcher of the show... not a reader of the books. The show made it very believable that Sansa would be a Virgin Queen (of sorts)... meaning that she would take no husband nor have any children. It is heavily implied that she is a victim of female circumcision at the hands of Ramsay. And Sansa seems to be quite capable of ruling on her own. She loves her family, and the North. She seemed to still have some affection for Tyrion. And I did hope that perhaps the two of them would end up together. And heaven knows Sansa had way more chemistry with Jon than Dany ever did. To the point where I admittedly did fantasize whether a union between those two would be possible (given that GRRM has an affinity for incest). But the show's strongly implies that Sansa rules alone as Queen in the North... and that's ok with me.

@Mj_Jetson

Yeah in the books, Sansa's arc is quite different - as of the beginning of The Winds of Winter, she's still in the Vale. Ramsay's bride is Sansa's childhood best friend Jeyne Poole. Jeyne is hidden in Littlefinger's brothel for a while after King Robert's death, where she's whipped and abused. Jeyne looks kinda like Arya and grew up at Winterfell, so the Lannisters dress her up in Stark colors, pretend she's Arya Stark and hand her over to the Boltons to marry Ramsay. The chapter where Jeyne and Ramsay get married - The Prince of Winterfell from A Dance with Dragons - is well worth a read, its bone-chillingly horrifying. If Jeyne and Sansa ever meet up in the books, and Jeyne tells her the horrors she's been through, that will probably turn Sansa against Littlefinger? Sansa and Tyrion's marriage wasn't great in the books... he's kind to her in many ways, but he's really ugly and she does not trust him (she trusted Cersei once, and accidentally betrayed Ned's coup to her. Never trusting a Lannister again.) They barely speak to each other and are really uncomfortable in each others' presence. Its also more difficult to undo marriages in the book - it requires that the marriage is unconsummated, and that its undone by the High Septon or a council of faith - probably not going to happen, but Tyrion may be presumed dead (he hasn't been seen since his escape, and is currently sitting in an army camp besieging Meereen, so he's not going to be returning to Westeros for ages) Sansa is currently kinda betrothed to Harrold Hardying - Sweetrobin's heir, upjumped squire and absolute jerk. Littlefinger's plan is for them to marry as soon as news arrives that Tyrion is dead... but Littlefinger's a liar so who knows what his actual plan is.

Politically I think it would be smart if Sansa married Robyn Arryn behind littlefingers back and got pregnant by him. That would make her the mother of the heir to the Eyrie and she’d rule in her child’s name until they came of age. Then the knights of the Vale would follow her not little finger and Robyn hates little finger in the books. She herself would have an army loyal to her which would strengthen her.

Shireen will be burned so that Jon can somehow be resurrected. Apparently GRRM told the show runners that will happen hence we saw it.

Aegon is the more interesting option based on your arguments but we all know GRRM will choose incest.

let's not forget that Jon is dead. yes, he may come back as a fire wight to fight in the War for Summer, but he is physically dead. GRRM writes realistic stories & my guess is that no one in Westeros would crown a corpse in a war against a corpse army.
