I overseeded with Artimus this year for the LS cultivators, last year was RTF and the year before that was lesco cool season mix from bare dirt. Also played with the JG dense shade mix in some spots. My lawns a total salad, and thats just my backyard. I have zoysia mixed with cool season grasses in the front lol. I enjoy seeing how all the different grass types preform. Spreading grass types are definitely my preference

I went with the Mountain View seed blend that Pete is now using based on Cam at Elevated Landscapes channel posted a couple of years ago. This will be the first year in forever that I didn’t have to overseed in that section. These spreading fescues are incredibly thick. Cam also mentioned be careful not to use the normal rates of this stuff because it does come in thicker than normal fescue. I paid 125 for 50 pounds of the blend with picking it up from newsom seed in Fulton Md.

In August I did 15,000 square feet with an 80/20 blend of Barenbrug TTTF and KBG. The fescue is their spreading one. It looks fantastic. Deep blue and thick. Hopefully next year I can see how the spreading does. Barenbrug isn't cheap, but I got awesome fast germination and coverage. I believe spreading fescue is here to stay. Why go old school when the new stuff has all the right stuff.

I tried some Barenbrug RTF, rhizomal tall fescue, in an area that I have had poor luck with in the past. Came in very nicely this fall, and hopefully it will start filling in next year. This is likely going to be my new go-to blend of seed. Gonna take a while to overseed my 80,000 sq. ft. Yard though sans irrigation. 😳

FYI - Camp Chemical in Roxboro, NC sells Triple Threat TTTF (no Plus), as well for around $112 per bag if you pick it up. They make and sell their own fertilizers as well for a fraction of the cost as the big box stores. They allow you to cut out the middle man.

Lowes currently sells their Lesco 18-24-12 starter fert for $80. Camp Chemical’s Green Eagle brand of 18-24-12 is $19.05 atm. One heckuva deal for those within driving distance. Great people working there also.

I used Artimus spreading tall fescue blend from Heritage PPG and it is the best seed I’ve ever sown. Blue tag certified and a 25lb bag was $100 even. No shipping fee and I received it in 2 days here in NC. I can’t recommend it enough. Triple threat and GCI was $50 dollars more for the same size if I remember correctly.

Artimuss is great but it shares a few cultivars with Pete’s blend. You’d be splitting hairs at that point. Heritage includes the PGS which is added value though. From a visual aspect, you won’t see a difference.

Pete’s new seed is all A List as well. Less inputs and water required. It’s a great blend. The best way I heard the “spreading” attribute described is a balding guy with a combover 😂 It doesn’t spread via rhizomes like a KBG but it does grow out. Regardless, his new seed is awesome.

Seems most company’s are going to lateral now. Last year I did 90/10 with lateral spread MVS cultivars. This year I put down artimuss, pure lateral already TTTF. Good stuff! It works.

In Texas, the best seeds that I can physically pick up is the Titan Rx, which is a spreading fescue. We had desert type weather all summer long, and most of it came back. Can you imagine having 115 degrees for 90 days and fescue grass survived? It takes longer to grow in the beginning. I dug some up to check for rhizomes and it definitely had it. I also have used barenbrug rtf with similar results

I used triple threat plus last year, but as mentioned earlier based off Cam's recommendations at Elevated Landscape I tried the GCI blend. Which is what I used at my old home for years. I think I tagged you on Instagram's on some of the results. The Triple Threat took about a year to really mature and luckily I am on a well so I can water all I want. Im eager too see how the two ( six cultivars plus a dash of KBG ) get along.

While it certainly does spread, I’ve never been fully satisfied with the density of “RTF” grass. Switched to a mix of TTTF and KGB this year with the hopes of greater density and finer leaf texture. Guess time will tell.

Like the idea of the lateral spread TTTF w/o the watering needs of the KBG blend. I will say though…I went to Southern Seeds this summer and got the Triple Threat. The color, feel, everything of the grass is amazing. Next year I’ll give GCI a try but man, that Triple Threat is really nice.

Oh yea, I’m not advocating for one brand over another, I just wanted to make people aware of spreading fescue versus non spreading. It’s like a future proof move. They are both fantastic and don’t blame anyone for using what they want to use.

@@MrFergusonLawntotally get what you’re saying and you didn’t give off that impression in the video. I was looking the KBG blend but after researching (watering) I decided with the TT. But this GCI offered what I’m looking for so I’ll try that next fall. Either way, you can’t go wrong

If mine is spreading, I cant see it lol. Its a slow process.... most seeds are Mountain View Seeds in Oregon , Petes "GCI" has the same cultivars as my "Southern Belle" . At the end of the day a company chooses a blend and can name it whatever they want. Just to help you good folks out , if u cant get it local then have it shipped. "THIS IS NOTHING NEGATIVE" towards Pete/GCI Turf !!!! I shop with him on the other stuff lol. That blue tag means so much to some folks , I get it ! ; but Petes seed blends were great before blue tag cert!! Some folks just gotta have that feel good tag.....Premium Tag = Premium Price!!!

as Pete even described years ago, RTF does spread yes, however it’s not as aggressive as warm season grasses. It’s not even quite the same as bluegrass but it does spread, if you fertilize the hell out of if often you can see it

Triple threat plus has 5 percent bluegrass and it's a lot cheaper
@MrFergusonLawn
@MrFergusonLawn 10 ай бұрын
True, but that’s a different thing entirely. Bluegrass isn’t equal to fescue. Yea it spreads, but it can’t tolerate heat or lack of water like fescue. Secondly, again, cost is exactly the same if you ship each to your home. It’s only cheaper if you go pick up at their location.
@buster7618

Is the spreading tall fescue that effective at spreading and filling things in? I always got the impression that it was more of gimmick and you still have to fix pee spots and that sort of thing. I'm with you though, if I had to pick one with the capability and one without, I'd probably go for the spreading because why not.
@MrFergusonLawn
@MrFergusonLawn 10 ай бұрын
Exactly. To your point, you'll still need to repair these areas, however, like you said, the lateral spreading itself will naturally thicken up the lawn just by doing what it does. You won't NOT have to repair areas, but the grass when matured will help in a small way to hide the bare ground even more. Win to me as well.

Have been using GCI spreading TTTF blend for a couple of years. The seed is alright but I don't see it spreading. Any idea how do I get the seed with 100% spreading TTTF seeds for overseeing instead of the blend that only has 1/3 spreading seeds? KBG needs too much water in summer otherwise it dies off so would like to stick with TTTF.

I wouldn’t continue to wait, but in my opinion you are good to go right now. Soil temps are still in the 60’s here in the piedmont of NC. Yard Mastery’s app gives a daily soil temp (not exact science but decent) and as long as you are still above 50 and it should be for the next few weeks, I’d go for it.

I only have experience with clumping fescue. Do you know if the lateral spreading fescue spreads using rhizomes or stolons? I’m curious if the spreading takes place on top of the dirt or under the dirt.
